  • A Mystic Blues guitar amp by Tommy Cougar Amps is played through a Marshall 1x12 (model 1933) with an ElectroVoice EVM12L speaker in it. I'm using a Gibson Les Paul 1959 Reissue.

The thing about Dumbles that doesn't come across in a video and I think most people don't get, is that it sounds and feels like you just put new strings on your guitar even if you didn't. They are super flexible and therefore take some time to live with and dial in and every one is different. The fabulous clean tone often gets overlooked too. A whole different animal than what our classic rock ears are trained to.

I dig it. I haven't ever been in a room with a Dumble, let alone played one, but there are a lot of useful and sweet tones in there. Everything from nice cleans and pushed cleans to almost Mesa-like drive. It seemed like it was very touch sensitive, with grit available if you started to dig in, but a lot of note clarity if you picked gently. You could tell you were enjoying yourself, because you jumped right off the well-trodden path and were playing some stuff we don't often hear from you. Nice job.

I’m not sure about the Dumble approach, but that doesn’t really matters to me. This thing can stand up for itself. It sounds to me, more like a grown up Bassman.
That amp can the builder be really f’ing proud of. It sounds amazing.
The dynamics, the clarity, the warm but yet harsh character and the way it compress, but still holds tone, is incredible. I’ll bet it would cut through a mix like a knife through meltet butter.
I would put that machine in my flow without looking back.
I would love to hear the amp with a tele and strat. It passes the Gibson test.

Like a Firearm, a Paint Brush a Guitar or an Amplifier, they are all tools and the real magic that may happen is due to the individual, what they have in their heart/soul and what they can do with their hands.
Great sounding amplifier Johan, and if anybody would know a good amp when they play it that would be You.

One thing I find absolutely amazing about Dumble and its clones is the way they compress. I tried playing metal through a Ceriatone OTS 100 and to be honest it requires no compression in the post processing phase to sound good.
It has a mid-range that's surprisingly tight, but at the same time it has overtones that make it sound big. It sounds on your face and surrounds you all at the same time. Here's the clip I recorded with it.

@@TheNocturnalEvil I fukn love it dude! That's sounded killer\,,/ ... My OTS 20 arrived 3 months ago now and it's truly inspiring to play it.. I gig it as much as possible lol. My 100w Leviathan gets to do all the Metal gigs and rehearsals. I put a Dumbler pedal and a steel Stringer pedal out front of Leviathan clean channel, sound wise was pretty be close to the OTS 20 but that 'feel' of a D style amp cannot be copped from a pedal ... Nik and Team Ceriatone build incredible amps!
I might be ordering a 100w OTS model at some stage, 🤞cool video mate, cheers 😉

Seems to have amaizng dynamics and a certain "air" to it, however, I'm more into clean tones, so I can't pass clear judgment based on this demo. You did play some clean tones, but I'd have it setup differently- just a matter of personal taste, really.
As far as the build goes, Tommy is great. Heard really good things from friends and Nik plays one on his channel sometimes.
Laslo, from SL Amps, makes a kickass (and well priced) SSS clone, if you're interested. Big, fat, mesmerizing cleans... And he's just around the corner...

Ha ! I knew, that sooner or later, YOU would come up with a kind of Dumble "Let's go" ! I really enjoy that review. I love Your style and I think that this 'Mystic Blues' really widens Your musical tonality. So this seems to be a very fine amp in the Welagen / Bludotone range. I feel that these modern 'Dumble Clones' are all more versatile than the original HAD amps. The Tone Book, HAD started to write in the late 70ties to early 90ties is even more interesting in my opinion in its recent Part II with its creative alternative authors. Tommy Cougar is, of course, one of them.

Sweet amp & nice playing Johan. I played a Dumble ODS combo once, 25-ish years ago. Sounded amazing in ways words can't describe. Covered in orange tolex, with the diamond grillecloth. It was for sale in a small, but awesome shop called Guitar Exchange near Baltimore. Was priced at $5,000, which was CRAZY money for an amp in 1994. (& yes, I knew about Dumbles). Proof of that is: I was picking up the monster Mesa/Boogie rig I ordered thru the shop; a Triaxis preamp, with Abacus footswitch + a Strategy 500 Stereo power-amp + a Halfback 4-12 cab loaded with EVM 12L's - all for $1,500 Less than the Dumble !! Still, I was tempted by the Dumble because of the rarity, but drove home happily without it because I had a trunk full of sonic devastation. \m/ Next day I woke up thinking about the Dumble. Called the shop right after opening to say I'd be back to buy it.., only to be told someone walked in just after I left the previous day & bought it. I wasn't too bummed about it Then, but knowing what that amp is worth nowadays is soul crushing in retrospect. At least I got to see/touch/play/hear a Dumble, right? Not that the experience is worth $100,000+ like the amp is, arrgh!

It's a personal amp should i say. The dynamic range of this amp is really good. I love Johan have test this one out. It's a different kind of amp. Tippar på att ovaxade mickar gör sitt till. Eller så är det bara högt :)

I played a Two Rock, a couple of Fuchs and I own a Mesa MkII (which some people called a poor man's Dumble but I wouldn't). I'll say that D style amps have a "thing" about them; they have a fast responding, mid-focused, dynamic sound that's both clear and compressed at the same time but it's not overly compressed in the way a Fender will if driven into overdrive. I found if you're a legato player or someone that plays with long, lyrical passages then they're probably great amps but given my experience with a Two Rock I concluded that I don't play in a way that I'd be able to get the best out that style of amp.

Grymt bra! ✌️

Everytime I've heard a Dumble ( only through headphones ) it seems to have an underlying ring to the notes that I haven't heard in any other amp . I imagine standing next to a real one must be awe inspiring .

Love this guy . Needs his own moody detective show. Each episode he investigates a tone homocide. Much of the time we see him driving through snow in a volvo or stood over a crimescene in full hasmat shaking his head at a kramer focus rammed into the side of a vox a c 30 or something equally shocking

Can someone explain to me why this is such a sought-after tone? I mean it's not bad, but it doesn't sound like anything I couldn't get out of my Peavey Bandit, Marshall Valvestate or Blackstar ID TVP.

Sounded awesome, but most of that is you and your playing. I use my Firehawk FX with a Dumble OD patch most of the time when I play. It sounds very similar to this and is very versatile with some of the gain dialed back a bit. Then it can really snarl with a tube screamer in front of it. I love how the camera was vibrating from the SPL! I can't enjoy that type of volume when I play out, but it sure is fun when you can! Loved the cool lens filter effect at the end. God bless and have a great weekend.

i still have to understand the dumble hype. i still have to play one though. is it the dynamics when playing? going just by sound, i would prefer a jcm 800. sounds not as even, more dangerous or something (i am bad with these explanations)
    nice playing though :)

Dumble amps are insanely expensive in the U.S. He is known for being able to build a custom amp to customer specs very well (create their desired tone). So the overdrive specials floating around are all somewhat different. This amp does a Dumble tone very well!
