Man, I played the crap out of the first episode of Duke Nukem 1. It was a really fun game that I didn't realize that it didn't have an actual soundtrack until years later. Also at the time, I had no clue what the word shareware even was or what it meant. So whenever I beat the first episode and saw a quick ad for the second episode, I though it was going to be the next full game.
I didn't know there was anything before Duke Nukem 3D, so this is an interesting game to look at. Reminds me of how way more people know about Gex 2 over Gex 1.
Also, either I'm hearing things or he says "D O N G letters" at 11:51.

It's even weirder coming from the other side to learn that there were 3d games after a decade of only knowing the 2d games and downright surprising that these games of all things merited the awesome 3d sequel!

"Undertale" - Dookus Nookus (2022)
Duke 1+2 were games that I was always tangentially aware of, but didn't know much about besides "Once upon a time, Duke was in a platforming game". So this was an interesting dive into the history of the series - and your commentary and the snappy editing made it all the better. Keep on doing your thing, Trav Guy.
Seeing your support for Metal health and suicide issues... I got a pet duck for an ESA recently. It really brightened my day. House ducks aren't for everyone, but I am so glad to have this guy in my life now. It's created some really wonderful moments. Anyways, I hope you're doing ok. As usual, you made some really good content.

There's just something so wholesome about the image of Duke sitting down on the couch in a nuclear-patterned bathrobe and bunny slippers with a mug of tea and tuning into Oprah.
Coming back to this video, the analysis is still great, and the humor is top notch-but what **really** makes it is Trav absolutely hamming it up with Proton’s lines.

I’m glad people are talking still about Duke Nukem nowadays. He’s definitely one of my favorite video game characters, and it’s nice that he remains relevant even after shot like Forever.
I liked Forever, but I will say it released five years too late.
At least Trav is earning his stars following in Civvie's footsteps. Bravo.

With the era duke nukum 3d was released, I'm not surprised people don't know that it was the 3rd game.
3d was usually placed in names cause 3d was novel and is not usually a pun with it being a 3rd game. But it's a nice surprise seeing that there even were games before 3d

I played through the shareware episode (Shrapnel City) multiple times as a kid. And a lot of the other shareware platform games of the time. Purchased episodes 2 and 3 a few years ago and played through them since I never did as a youth. I thought they held up pretty well and was happy to complete the unfinished business of eliminating Dr. Proton.

Duke 1 was.before adlib and sound blaster took off. Most pc's were EGA with PC speaker
Now that I think about it, maybe the moon is terraformed cause in Duke 3D, Duke goes to the moon in episode 2 without a space suit.
The space suit was a planned item. It was in the shareware version of the game.
For some reason they just decided to have the moon sections take place inside force fields, which explains why you can breathe.

I vaguely remember playing this when I was younger. For some inexplicable reason, my grandfather had it set up on his computer at one point, my guess being presumably one of the step-cousins I had back then set it up.
I miss the original Duke Nukem games. They, along with other Apogee titles, need to make a comeback.
I think those breakable blue bridges only break if you land on them while not holding across. Also for Duke Nukem II there's now the Rigel Engine to enhance the experience.

This is great. Really looking forward to this series. Blood is one of my favorite games ever, so I’m DEFINITELY looking forward to that one.
I believe the reason for why Duke looks so…red….is because they didn’t want Duke to have a case of the Commander Keens due to the limited palette the EGA(?) Provides. Due to the reds occupying the shading of his skin, they chose the next best thing. (I think) At least it’s better than having only baby blues, pinks, black, and white as your only colors.
Of course that's the reason lmao. My bit was a joke.

Great video :) as far as the side platformers go , Duke 2 is such a huge upgrade from the first one. The sound effects and music are so cool in Duke 2. One of my favourite old Dos classics along with Hocus Pocus.

24:48 what they could've done is get the vertical scrolling, and when its at a value like lets say 800 pixels, if thats true then change the background sprite from future world to underground lair.
While there isn't exactly a Duke Nukem 1 source port, there is a reverse engineered version called 'ReDuke' that has been around since 2011 and makes the game run and look a little better, and even has some higher quality borders and UIs so it doesn't look quite so rough, resolution-wise.
It even has music support, so you can actually play Duke Nukem 1 with music (the game has no music of any kind, only grating computer sounds). I personally used level songs from Duke Nukem 3D--hearing Grabbag makes Duke Nukem 1 so much more fun!
Ah, now if only you would do a review of the Evercade versions of Duke Nukem 1 and 2.

I remember buying the shareware version of this as a kid (as was common practice at the time) and playing it a lot. I later found a level editor for it and had a blast making my own levels. Back in the early 1990s those PC speaker sound effects were perfectly acceptable
I got duke 1 and 2, and I believe Halloween harry on floppy disk from a computer repair shop, that I rode my bike to while listening to the misfits on a cassette tape. good times

It was Duke Nukum, because they were aware of the character and wanted to avoid a lawsuit, and then later they realised it wasnt copyrighted, hence the change TO 'Duke Nukem'

An arena FPS? Just an FPS surely? Isn't an Arena FPS an FPS game where the main idea in both single and multiplayer is to win "match" type scenarios in arena's, i.e. control the most points, get the most kills, capture x y amount of times before the other team(s). Whereas DN3D has a story for Single Player mode. I mean Surely UT99 and Q3A were the first "Arena FPS" games

When I was a kid my family had an old windows pc with duke 1, all the og keen games that I know of and nethack. those were some of the best gaming years of my childhood. wish i knew where the old install disks are but I think they are lost to time now

I was/is mostly a console gamer my whole life, but Duke 3D is one of the few PC games I played a shit-ton as a kid.
Trav, if you are going to take on Duke Nukem 2. Try it out with Rigel Engine, a reverse engineered DN2 which includes widescreen support along with smooth scrolling, quick saving, modern controller support and more.

we didn't have a lot of money growing up, but my dad ended up being into computers and my mom got one went she went back to school, so I had the ability to play shareware games almost more than consoles. so I played through a lot of old games.
demo CD roms with tons of slightly older games were pretty affordable too.
