    A lot of the side wrinkles are eliminated from the sides in historical corsets and stays by cutting the side pieces on the bias. Or almost bias. They tend to be tilted to allow curving around the body. I know modern corsets each one is cut on the grain but this is why it crinkles. Like the iconic bunny bodysuit.
    Another great video like always!

    8:47 if you don’t like the math, an easy way to divide something like these tabs equally is to use a non-stretch ribbon or cord the same length as the total length and fold it into however many sections you need- for 4 sections, fold it in half and in half again. Mark on the cord where the folds are, and then lay it out over the edge where you are marking your divisions to transfer the measurements.

    the last time I used a custom corset generator, the fit was horrendous! it took my bust measurement, and just divided it in half for front and back. all very well, but my back is so much smaller. so the arm pit area was halfway up my bust. I ended up taking it apart to rectify the issue, and having to change every piece. would of been quicker for me to just draft it from scratch. thank god for mockups! gotta love a good princess bride reference 😂

      That's why I like this pattern so much. It takes cup size into account, and it goes past D cups, which is awesome! I haven't looked at the proportions on the CCG to see how the thing changes in relation to cup size, but I bet it does vary.

    Hi. This is the first time I've found your channel and I really enjoyed watching. I've been a 17th century re-enactor for about 30 years and drafted my stays pattern a long time ago. Apart from the inevitable problem of them shrinking in the wardrobe during the winter they still fit fairly well. I have a large bust and have found that the best way to get the girls corralled into the right place is to angle the outer boning channel towards the under arm. 👏👏

      My first attempt at a corset was just the upper half, based (pretty loosely by the end of modifications) on the Athletic Corset from Foundations Revealed, in an attempt to make something more comfortable than a sports bra (I HATE underboob bands, they're always too tight and regular sports bras always try to squoosh everything out the arm holes) and I ended up doing exactly the opposite with the side boning, in the pattern it angled to the rear but I angled it forward instead to encourage the girls to stay up front and get out of my armpits. On the mockup I did one side each way and was way happier with my revision than the original. Mockups are so worth it! And thanks to your post I now know I have things to try with the boning if I ever do make stays! So far my most comfortable supportive garment I've made has been my kirtle pinafore, drafted according to Morgan Donner's video and my to-do list includes seeing if that pattern can be chopped up into a smaller support garment. I'm not a re-enactor but a medieval armoured fighter looking for comfortable and historically adequate garb to wear when not armoured up.

But I would say honestly most of the eras I've made have been comfy, even--surprisingly--the 1640's stays, which I thought would be awkward with the busk. The most uncomfortable for sure are Regency long stays, BECAUSE of the busk.

    I'm sure I've got that site bookmarked and actually did draft and mock up something using an old pillowcase and it wasn't that bad considering I'm effectively a brick with boobs, but then something else shiny caught my attention and it went into the mockups bin to be forgottten. Time to go revisit it, now that I know the difference between a corset and stays LOL, and thanks for pointing out how to find the sneaky little details I'll probably want too! I'll probably have the opposite problem you do, I'm broad through the back which makes me measure like I have a much bigger bust than I do. And through trying some other form fitting things I have discovered that all my measurements lie so I HAVE to mock up anything fitted that I haven't made before, and even if I have used that pattern before, I need to at least start with a mockup that can be used as lining. My half-corset sports bra and corset vest attempts have shown me that my lower ribs DO NOT WANT reduction but my belly fat is perfectly happy to go somewhere else, if only I had more than an inch between my bottom rib and the top of my hip.... and I suspect my anatomy will do well with some crescent boob cups in there to prevent things from slithering down the front (thank you for that mental image, Mariah Pattie).
    I'm getting used to drafting based on my measurements because even if I try to start with a commercial pattern I have to do a lot of modifications, just as an example if I use Mood's sizing on their free patterns, my bust is size 12, my hips are size 8 and my waist is size 18 just based on measurements... but I'm also getting used to how my measurements lie. I always have to take in the bust because my girls are wide without sticking out that much, and I have to move the waistline down two inches if it's to be a loadbearing waistband but to use the same measurement as my "natiral waist" because otherwise the waistband slides off over my barely-there hips.

    • @FantasticalFolliesCostuming
      @FantasticalFolliesCostuming  Рік тому

      I'm not precisely sure what you mean about cutting it in parts. The pattern is one piece, a left and right side. Or do you mean the straps? If it's the straps, no, that was a personal choice.
      A good way to get paper is to use your junk mail. Just iron out any creases in the paper first, use a low iron setting. Sales circulars are really good, because they're usually bigger, but only use the glossy ones and not the newspaper-y ones, ink will smudge your fabric.

If you can't get into the thing with straps in place you can always try having them attached at the back then just bend over till they fall over your shoulders so you can reach them to button them (this was how I fitted the strap placement on mine cause my shoulders suck too). That will help you develop your skills so that when you're finally ready to tackle (and fit!) your stays, it's less intimidating 😊
      Also! My best advice for new corsetry/staymakers is to allow yourself to make mistakes in your first couple. Staymaking is a skill! You need to practice to make perfect. Go in expecting the first couple to have mistakes. Because they will. If you go in with that mindset, you will be less frustrated 🧡

    I love the idea of drafting and I’ve tried this before. I think my issue is that my body changes dramatically day by day so my measurements are always wrong. I think maybe I just need to measure myself for a week and see what I get. But then the question is do I use an average, the smallest or largest numbers? What do you think?

    • @FantasticalFolliesCostuming
      @FantasticalFolliesCostuming  Рік тому +3

      I think it depends on where you fluctuate. Small side of your average is probably best, because you can always lace it wider, but it'll only close so much. I think your best bet is to make it front and back lacing, and make sure at least one side of your straps attach with eyelets. That'd give you extra places to adjust with your fluctuation. I know the effigy stays from this time period have front lacing, so it's accurate, although you wouldn't get the nice slick front like these.

      The UA-cam algorithm doesn't like the word "stays" like it does "corset." The thumbnail obviously shows stays (but not 18th century stays, not sure where you got that from, they're Elizabethan, so late 16th-early 17th.) In addition, the average beginner, who this video is catering to, doesn't distinguish between the two terms. 🤷‍♀️

      @@FantasticalFolliesCostuming Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy your video. Not sure about the algorithm thing, have to take your word for that; though the algorithm cannot improve if people put the wrong words in the titles. My youtube starts playing the videos as scrolI through them, so the thumbnail was only there for a second for me to see. Also, I am a beginner at historical costuming. I made my first corset this summer and am looking for a better pattern to work with my nonstandard dimensions. I think most beginners should know stays are different from a corset before they reach the desperation level required to decide to make their own. I do know the difference between corsets and stays, though apparently not the difference between eras of stays. They all look pretty similar from late 1600-1700s. Sorry if that offended you. Wasn't trying to pick a fight or anything. I just wanted to let you know the title was misleading. I still watched the video because I intend to make some stays soon-ish as well as a new corset.

    • @FantasticalFolliesCostuming
      @FantasticalFolliesCostuming  11 місяців тому

      No offense taken! I do actually appreciate the feedback. I agree with you that everyone should know the difference between the two terms. It was a conscious decision I had to make, though, so I wanted to convey that.
      I do have a corset resource for you. I can't link because YT doesn't like it, but if you go to corset pattern maker . com (w/o spaces), they do the same thing as the site on this video, only with a (free) custom Renaissance fair bodice and a Victorian corset (which is not free, it's $20.) You do get a digital pattern and don't have to draw it yourself. I can't speak for how good the pattern is, I haven't used them yet. I do intend to do a video on the Ren bodice at some point, but if you're a beginner and have unconventional proportions, that may be a better step for you to learn how your body is unique--because that is absolutely the only hard part about corsetry. Once you understand how to fit, everything else clicks. Laughing Moon's Dore corset is also a decent pattern and is much cheaper, although from someone who also has unconventional proportions, I had to modify that thing a LOT. But their instructions are pretty good, and unlike a lot of corset patterns out there, they take cup size into consideration.
      I'm glad to hear you're wanting to do stays--to be honest, fitting and making stays is much easier and more forgiving to beginners, because you don't have to curve things, and don't need expensive steel boning or steel busks (just heavy duty zip ties and maybe a paint stick from Home Depot.) I'd totally encourage you to try that first--each set of stays or corset you do will be easier and more successful, especially where fitting is concerned. And if it's something you're less enthusiastic about, you'll get less frustrated if things go wrong (which they will, it's part of the process...and we all experience it.)

    Thank you so much I will def. try it. And the best part? It transfers from Inch to cm with one klick-hurray. No math needed indeed. 🪡

      You're so welcome! I'd love to see them when you're done! And that's a great point--I forgot to mention that! Whoohoo for instant measurement conversion! 🥳
