Four Years Playing the Electric Guitar - Month by Month Progress
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лют 2020
- This is my progress throughout my first four years playing the electric guitar! I started playing guitar in Jan 2016 as an adult beginner and I've been entirely self-taught with the help of the internet. Throughout this time I've also been working a full-time job in addition to learning guitar and making videos.

This year I decided to include an approximately equal number of clips from each year to give a better idea of what I chose to learn over time. There are many other clips I couldn't fit into this video, so check out my previous progress videos if you are interested in seeing more!
I think one of the things I improved most this year was actually my ear! I've been working a lot on learning by ear and I plan to continue to do so going forward. The solo at the end of the video is also a big milestone for me. It's one I attempted a long time ago but gave up on and then decided to try again this year. It was a challenge for me to get it up to speed and, while there is still room for improvement, I feel a lot more confident now in my bends and hammer-ons/pull-offs :).

@@r333ba learn a scale. Then, do some exercises. Next, play on the scale you learned. It will sound cool.
@@r333ba practice dexterity in your fingers. Do different versions of "the spider" exercise.. practice alternate picking so you don't get stuck in downpicking only. With strong fingers and muscle memory you can then learn songs easier. And don't forget to use your pinky when practicing. And ofc learn basic open chords. Good luck 🤘
Its way more fun tho, if you do boring practices you are going to get bored and unmotivated because you cant see your progress...
@@FG-vp6id Very true .. But great technique comes from plenty of practice. as the saying goes learn to walk before you run . So in 4 years, she just looks the same with no sign of aging? This video is definitely fake and the whole "1st-week footage" was just her current self holding herself back lol. Forged video for some viral goals, but it's sad to know that actual guitar beginners will bite into the lie and think that in one year, they'll sound exactly like "she sounded in one year." To constantly film herself for 4 years straight with the "someone will watch me publicly" demeanor and sign on her face, it's just full bs.
@@costinvaly1 she’s an adult how much is really gonna change in 4 years?? Also she clearly did change. Also the camera quality and overall quality and vibe of her videos changed over the clips. It’s not like she just posted clips from the same day and changed her clothes guitar, amps, playing style etc. She clearly did progress. Her entire channel is of her playing guitar it’s not like she faked this one video. Can’t you just let her have her moment?
@@thegreyladm8547 You're the kind of customer I love in my marketing and mass com. Profession because you're the easiest ones to convince. With a Ph.D. in this field, do you think I really can't tell fake videos from the real ones when I've helped customers forge ads and promos with this same "x years transformation" concept and creating factors that would make it believable? This is the most accessible kind of video to forge, so I'm not surprised that even amateurs can do it out of fame goals and going viral. Pretty understandable. I'm also a piano player; I grew up with it, shoved down my throat by my parents, and just two years ago, I started learning guitar as an adult with my already existing music theory knowledge, practicing 2 hours a day, every day including weekend under my brother's lead (he's teaching guitar). I'm nowhere near the performance she had at nine months in. Also, my brother confirmed the same thing about the integrity of her video.

@@lewiiis are you being sarcastic!? I could do all chords including barre chords and all the diminished, augmented, sus chords etc. Within my first year. And I'm self taught with books and internet. You're not trying hard enough. Since the first day I played guitar not a single day has passed without me playing atleast a few minutes, even after work when I'm so tired and busy. On my off days I may practice 4 hours or even more. You should know all your main open chords (including F) within 3 months. Hold the chord while you watch TV or listen to music. Just hold that position for 30 minutes or more, dont even strum. Make your hand get use to holding that shape. You have to think "im going to do this if my fingers bleed and it literally kills me." Its all about how bad do you really want to do this.

How's the progress? I started playing as a middle aged dad, and progress is painfully slow compared to children. Between time constraints, other priorities, and older brain syndrome, it just takes time. Totally worth it though.
It took me several years (inconsistent practice, no lessons, no one to jam with, etc.) to really sound musical, but I stuck with it, and now I get to make "guitar faces" while I play!

9:59 you know she's improved when fire starts coming out the floor
LMAO
Seeing this makes me depressed lol. Two years later, and I'm still struggling with the basics. The dedication you must have to committed, many-hour daily practices. Well done.
I'm progressing really well. I put in a minimum of 2-3 hrs a day. In 2 months of learning I've made a lot of progress
Set aside a mere ONE hour, four days a week. You'll probably improve significantly in 6 months.
You don't have to practice for hours every day. Set aside 20 minutes a day - yes, only 20 minutes. That adds up fast, and you will improve at a good pace. True, the more time you spend, the faster you'll get better, but many people just don't have an hour or more a day, so some practice time is better than none. The important part is to make it a consistent habit, so even 15-20 minutes a day when done as a habit will get the job done. It also helps immensely to have a good teacher. Have fun and good luck!
Don’t worry I played for a year and a half but now I’m learning guitar lmao I learned smells like teen spirit solo in 2 days and purple haze in 2 days but you will get there
don't feel bad. I've been taking guitar lessons at a music store but am currently still a beginner after 5 years of learning, lessons each Thursday at every week.
It always takes time, the most important thing is to never quit, keep playing, you're doing good! 🤘
This is crazy good and shows that practice makes perfect!
She was as good after one year as I was after 10 years. Guess thats what actually playing and PRACTICING does, instead of playing the same songs on easymode over and over again and taking weeks off at a time.....
It's likely a faked progress. The first 3 months are fine, maybe you can think she progressed very fast, but it's still doable. But suddenly her skills skyrocketed after 5 months. That's NOT realistic unless you pour hours and hours of training every single day, sweep picking is really hard to learn, and the sound when she plays is completely clear. That's also unrealistic. And that Ibanez Prestige after 7 months of practice... come on.
The video is cool and this girl is really good at playing guitar. But this progress is a total fake.
@@Gravewurm lol wtf are you on about, that 5 month mark was very, very clearly a beginner playing guitar, it was good for the amount of time she had played but not "good" under any stretch of the imagination. And that "sweep picking" was also very clearly someone who has just started learning to sweep, nothing crazy. Anyone who has tried learning to sweep can tell you that sweeping is difficult and it's probably better to begin learning sooner rather than later. As for the Prestige after 7 months; some people earn a good living and can afford nice things, who would have thought? Some people's first guitars cost more than my entire collection. You honestly just come off as really salty.
@@Gravewurm you would be surprised, my first tutor had played guitar over 10 years and within 18 months he told me he can not teach me anything else because now I know more than he does and proceeded to ask me how to do certain things. Its a strange feeling for some people on guitar its hard for me to explain its like it becomes part of some people. Like its not playing the guitar like its a guitar instead it becomes like magic part of me that I can push emotions through
@@Gravewurm okay, I have a prs custom 24 as well as a prs mt15 amp, a prs archon amp, a 4x12 cabinet with 2 v30's and 2 wgs reapers (I like how the 2 speakers sound combined) and a bunch of pedals and shit and I have only just started getting into guitar, so not impossible. You can't have that "she's still new at guitar so there is no way she would own anything better than a Squier strat starting out" mentality just because you had a "beginner" setup for your first year. I personally think that its better to buy a midrange to higher priced guitar and amp setup in the beginning because not only will you likely be more inclined to learn on nicer equipment than "beginner" equipment, but you'll also be more inclined to continue using your setup even after you've advanced to being able to really play. I believe I'd be more inclined to learn if I had a $1k-3k guitar over a Squier or some offbrand guitar with shitty quality control and an overall sub par sound and feel, which is exactly why I decided to go with good stuff with my setup. That's just my opinion though. They're like assholes, everyone has one.
@@VicinalElk44104 true!! I really wished to have better gear. Everything is expensive in Brazil
I just hit my 2 year anniversary and there’s nothing stopping me now

I’m about to hit my 5 year mark in a few months
This next summer will be my 4 year mark
Thank you for the great video! I am blown away at how well you played in just a year and a half, but by 4 years way way way AWESOMERRRR!!! YOU ROCK!
Extremely inspiring! Thanks for sharing, keep up the great work girl! 🤟

I'm two weeks in to learning guitar and this has given me some much needed inspiration to keep going.
keep it up! you’ll only keep getting better. learning a new skill that you love is tough but rewarding 🙂
Hope ur still going, I'm playing bass and I'm also inspired by her to continue and to also pick up a guitar 🌟
@@TheVirtualJenesis I'm still going, I don't get as much time to practise as I'd like but I think the key is to find stuff you enjoy playing and just keep going. Even in the few weeks I've been playing I can start to see progress.
@@ashleyhodgkiss88 definitely, each day progress is always made
How are you doing these days?
Wow Rachelf! I just started watching your video and it's so awesome to see your progress. I watched your first year, then skipped to the end, and when I got there, everything had changed; your sound, the way you were recording, the kind of track you were playing along to... It was great to watch!
Absolutely amazing! I’m envious of your talent.
This young lady has inspired me to begin and learn to play at 51. Wanted to since I was a teen in the 80s watching EVH and other greats. Thank you Miss 😊
RIP Eddie. I wish I had been around to experience the greatness of the 80s

@@dougp5044 This young lady proved you can do it when you have fun with it. Got my first guitar at 25, and it's been waiting here for me all these years. One chord at a time. I'll come back here to check on your progress periodically.
I knew I was in trouble when on the first day she already knew chords
RIGHT
She didn't start with acoustic
@@rmdavidov She didn't
@@rmdavidov no she didn't, she said at about the 3 and a half year mark that she played acoustic for the first time.
well, power chords were first thing i learnt so...
I enjoyed watching your progress. Thanks for sharing, Mike
Wow! What an awesome journey! Very inspiring to stay committed to constant practicing. 🤘
As an adult (I'm 28) female beginner, playing for 3 months now, you inspire me to keep going. My boyfriend just started playing bass and your progress give him motivation too! It's just so cool to see where hardwork, dedication and passion can lead people. I know that it sound cheesy but you rock! \m/

I wish you nothing but luck dude. Guitar can be pretty tedious starting off, but it will slowly become an everyday activity that’s always enjoyable.
@@BlaZe-pl4ym thanks brother 💯 I appreciate the advice!! I will keep working at it and definitely get my money's worth playing out of pure passion!!!! I can feel it and I don't even have it yet 🤣😂
Rachelf after 4 years: amazing
Me: wait, i'm a drummer...meh *continues watching*
Satan under a mask you’re amazing!! I can’t for the life of me play drums.
Playing the drums is just an amazing thing, doing completely different things with each limb takes serious dexterity
@@dmghgzgngmhm5537 for real tho! I am I can play a bit on guitar but drums are my main thing
@@phatyoshi6733 dexterity it’s nothing to do with moving your limbs lmao it means you have greater control over your hands mate just saying 🤷♂️
@@SgtS1lky dexterity doesn’t just deal with the hands, most people associate dexterity with the hands, but it is just being able to use you limbs to perform tasks that most people cannot do, moving four limbs simultaneously while drumming takes serious dexterity and skill
Loved the two new guitars you got first off. I can see you hit your stride around the 1 year 2 months mark, that’s when you could noticeably tell that you were finally confident in your playing. Very cool that you kept a video diary.
Love watching the progress...
4 YEARS ALREADY!!!!!!!! Time really flies when you're having fun. What a journey
It definitely does! :)

why do i see your comments on every guitar related video??

Me: playing the same guitar for 7 years
liomio vlogs Welcome to the club boss
The Doo play fender bullet strat for like 10 year havava i play the same guitar but for two year
Believe me getting a new guitar is so much fun, it feels like christmas
As long as it is a good guitar that is setup properly, sounds decent and feels good to play its probably the way you should do it. Having too much stuff is not good and I would have like 2 to 3 guitars just for different tunings.
Your guitar must be suhr. Its ok, you really dont need another one
So inspiring, the way you smile like Mona Lisa, so happy, thanks for sharing!
Woah, a most righteous progression and development from plunking to gnarly shredding. Truly inspirational, I hope to rock half as hard as you do.
Party on, Wayne!
Party on garth
You at 3 months: *literally amazing*
Me at 6 years: okay so- what note is that again?
YourLocalHufflepuff same here, so hard to remember all those notes even after several years playing 😂
Don’t confuse a “musical” ear with just learning notes, either the ability of perception on doing things really good without practicing, with just practice. Having talent is one thing, practicing it will take you sky high!..
With about 10 months she was already better than me with 3 years lol
I really need to practice more
Yeah, I am feeling like trash right now watching this... a year later and i dont feel any better
@@videogamess2143 I'm currently trying to learn some songs that me and my friends like, so anytime when we do hang out we can play and sing, it's very fun.
@@videogamess2143 Really the fastest way for me has been just to challenge yourself. Try to learn challenging riffs/solos and you will nail them after some practice. I mean ive only played for about two months but i think i have improved quite a lot. I mean i have no clue about my level but can play fade to black except the solo and many other metallica intros
Its not about the years. Its about the hours. Put in at least an hour a day and you will see results fairly quickly. You can play a 100 or a 1000 hours throughout 1 year, and people will still say they played for a year. Years mean nothing. It's the hours that count. :D
@@leonandersen7276 I know that years don't count as much as hours, but years give an idea of how good someone is at playing the guitar. It's kinda "weird" to see for example someone who plays for more than 10 years and is bad at guitar.
Just absolutely a light of life and joy and happines.
Great !
Awesome! You really brought it together for the first time at 2 yrs 6 mos. Really awesome follow through. I love how you continually enjoy yourself. Sky”s the limit, sister!
People sharing their learning experience like she was gifted with the ability to play when in reality she just put more work into learning and playing then you. You see it in the first year, her hands go from "virgin" hands to shredding vainy hands. That only comes with thousands of hours of practice time, you have to want to pearn how to play more then anything else to progress like this. She not only blew me away with her ability to learn the guitar like this in 4 years but with her growth in confidence too, she went from hiding her face in every video to smiling and rocking out in videos. Bright future ahead of you kid! Keep rocking 🤘
