Star Wars: Squadrons Single-Player Review
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 вер 2020
- Star Wars: Squadrons' single-player campaign reviewed on PC by Tom Marks, also available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Squadrons is also available in VR on PC and with PSVR, and an Oculus Quest with a link cable was used for this review.
Squadrons doesn't end up doing anything too memorable with its charming characters or interesting rival squadron setup, but this campaign still tells an entertaining story and its flight controls hit a sweet spot between accessibility and nuance - all made even better by VR and HOTAS support.

All my training flying a Cessna 152 in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 has led me to this day.

All my training in Star Fox has led me to the same day
@NoneOfThe Above oh crap watch out for the DCS folks. They will knock us out of the sky like it's duck hunt. Those guys don't play around. Team Cessna Microsoft Flight Simulator, Rogue Squadron, Star Fox here
Love seeing how useless the empire is without Palpatine, every officer stepping over the other to assume leadership and in doing so making it easy for a United New Republic, makes sense how the empire fell so quickly despite having the numbers.
Plenty of commanders in canon were also just as effective, but did it faster so it didn’t have to drag the same story over 10 years.
Archangel980 WHAAAAT are you even talking about? That IS what Palpatine would rather have happen. Only the strongest survive in Sith lore. The next in line has to execute his/her lord to advance.
Darth Bane I understand they aren't intrinsically the same, however he's speaking about Palpatines absence and the order of things hence, in which Palpatine instilled Sith ideology.
It happened fast??? What?
After Thrawn anyways. Or is he still chilling in limbo with space whales now? Who knows nowadays lol...
No riding horses on star destroyer - 0/10.
loooool
I've always wondered, how did they know to bring horses to a space battle?
*no fifa mode* - 0/10
You mean aerial troopscooter to roam other planet?
more like 10/10, anything reminding us of TROS deserves nothing but a 0
I would love to see more games like this but more focused on story. I’ve always wished we could get a Clone Wars version of Rogue Squadron.
The game is directed by Ian Fraizer who is an RPG nerd who previously designed Kingdom of Amalur. I was wondering if his experience and sensibility in the genre would translate to this game. Guess it does in some charming ways.
kingdom of amalur the paint by numbers fantasy rpg
@BMO yea, Curt Schilling
Unfortunately the writer for this game is as PC as it comes
Kingdom of Amalur was quite an enchanting game btw.
The VR bit is totally true. VR and space ships are a match made in heaven. I honestly can't even play Elite or NMS without my HTC Vive anymore.
I really wish elite would get psvr support dammit
I dunno, the way the guy said it made me think he never played real flight sims before. It's cute in a baby's first immersive cockpit only flight sim way, but does not give me confidence that it is any different from any other flight sim with VR.
This game outside VR is just bad, but on VR is great. At least for me @ Quest 2 and RTX-3080 the details when you maxed out this game on VR are just fabulous, i'm in love with the cockpit of the TIE fighters :D
Didn’t know this game even came out
Shane Chambers how are people playing it now then

@@urbanxfrost certain review outlets get early copies they can play to review, and some games allow for reviews to be released before the game's release itself.
@Jacob Durkin I played a day early on Xbox by changing my region to New Zealand. It was still kind of tough finding games. I did get matched up against i am wildcat and cartoonz in one game though.

Eamon Costanza It’s 8 out of 10. Don’t just use the scroll bar to check. IGN animates their numbers up to the review scores.
Rogue Squadron 2.0 was what we all wanted out of this. Looks like they delivered.

The single player feels like Rogue Squadron crossed with Star Wars Trilogy Arcade. I really like it!!!
The one mission where you fly with Wedge REALLY hit me with that Rogue Squadron nostalgia
I mean, an 8 is pretty solid for a story mode in a game that's more about the PVP modes.
Dude, IGN would give an 8 if I took a dump in a DVD case and mailed it to them.
@@nsaylor9 yea and you could find the cure to aging and every sicknes and they would give it a 9
There's only 2 PvP modes
@@Alex_Logan22 *Shrugs* Fair point. I imagine this will be another game with regular content updates. Probably bring in more modes based on feedback. I think EA is still walking on eggshells in regards to Star Wars. After their missteps and with Disney breathing down their necks.
Nick they go safemode with moet games lately so most people are happy
1980 DOS version X-Wing has been my all time favorite. Tie fighter vs X-Wing a close second. There was a remake recently that had a similar feel, but just the absence of visual lag / response time on CRT screens, and direct hardware control, has always been hard to beat. Same with Commander Keen and the original Doom.
People need to understand this isn’t gonna be Battlefront 3 before they play this game. Give it a chance to be it’s own thing 🙄
think id still rather play battlefront cuz it has this as a mode basically
Anybody who wants BF here should just play BF. Lol there's a bunch of them.
There nothing there to make bf3
We got everything we need in bf2
Other that there no idea to make bf3
@@bahaaomar4526 More modes, characters, better graphics, better servers etc.
Bahaa Joudeh there is heaps there to make a battlefront 3, if you think that’s all there is to Star Wars then you need to do more research 😂
Why is it that every new Star Wars character looks like the person taking my order at Star Bucks?
Because after their bit parts in the series ended, thats where they found employment.

8/10 pretty decent.
Meh
8/10
There are 🌟 in galaxy
I’ll believe the campaign is 8/10 when I see a play through. I’ve seen too many times where an 8 by an ign reviewer is equivalent to a 5/10 in reality
Case in point: Mulan (2020) got an 8/10
Proceed with caution in your optimism
@@BoredOuttaMyMind I usually agree with most positive reviews from IGN, their Negative ones are sometimes wrong though. Death Stranding for example, game was a 10/10.
@@shovelfighter-_-9667 Death Stranding is far even from a 8..
@@gamer-px5cu yea I know it's easily a 10! Game was an amazing experience.
I agree with the reviewer's comments about the game being a balance of arcade and simulator styles.
It's pretty interesting what extra things you can do. You can even focus your shields on the front or the back of your ship. That's probably going to prove quite effective in multiplayer.
Can't wait to play this in vr already loved the vr mission in battlefront 1.

The New Republic secret weapon : The Starhawk. Here we see a cannon backstory for the capital ship !
About what I expected and I'm happy with that. Firstly its a relatively cheap game but also I feel the single player "campaign" is there mainly to make sure players know the mechanics of the game and are familiar with each ship type as much as possible. Frankly, I think 10hrs is excellent.
Many full on single player games are 8 to 10 hours.
So a 8 hour tutorial to prep u for multiplayer is more than could have been asked for.
@@martinmanley5303 which single player only are 7-8 hours only
@@thefallen4706 hellblade, the order, vanquish and im not sure about resident evil 3 remake, but i do kno its short.
There are more im sure.
Not all single player games are huge like ff7 remake, mass effect or open world games.
Altho u can complete open world games much much faster if it wasnt for all the traveling and sidequest.
So like i said.. a 8 hour tutorial is pretty big since its focus is multiplayer.
Those who refuse to play multiplayer games are missing out on some of the best/most fun games.
@@martinmanley5303 Hellblade was an indie game, and every other game you listed got absolutely crucified by critics for being short. The Order was just a 4 hour movie. RE3 also got a ton of hate for being so short and focusing on a horrendously unbalanced multiplayer mode that no one cared about after a week.
Yeah I soon realised that after a couple of missions!

That’s fine, I only need the SP review. I’ve got the game pre-ordered and I only intend to play the campaign and maybe some bot matches.

Star wars : Squadrons makes you feel like a tie fighter
Original I love it
What a great intro discussion! Made my day :)
Can this be played with a flight stick?
Star Wars Squadrons is a fun game ! 🙂 The feeling of flying your X-Wing or Tie Fighter and so on is an amazing experience and to blast enemy ships :)
You can see any of the secondary characters as a Mass Effect or KOTOR companion? That's a bold claim🤔
by andromeda standards it does
@@kamelkadri2843 that's exactly what I was thinking.
I wish they’d just make a modern single player Star Wars RPG
The characters are pretty likable and interesting. Although, as the review points out, their dialogue is a bit clunky. Mostly, I think, because you're playing a silent protagonist and they have do most of the conversation themselves.
It's smoother, when it's two or more of the characters chatting.
Probably closer to a Jacob than a Garrus
Is there stuff to do after story? Or just multi-player?
I'm someone who grew up on Star Wars: X-Wing (1993), Star Wars: TIE Fighter (1994), and Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance (1999). I loved those games and have felt there has a been a lack of SW flight simulator games as space combat in games since that era has given way to arcade style space battles. However this game looks interesting and am willing to give it a try.
It has a little something for everyone
Makes you feel like Batman
We except 3rd person
This game makes me desperately wish I could afford a VR headset and a hotas setup...
You can get a PSVR headset and camera for about $200. Save the $150 and skip the move controllers. Most PSVR games can be played with a controller.
Half life alyx made me the same feeling
Highly recommend the Quest 2 it’s the best headset at the moment to get into VR don’t even need a PC and it’s pretty cheap. Works on PC and PlayStation(much better than the PSVR)
You had me at "not that different from the 90's tie fighter"
need to be able to navigate & command capital & support ships aside from fighters now that would be a complete game id like to see in the future.
Now this is the VR game I've been look for!
Is this only vr
Can't wait to setup my PS-VR again for this!
Just got this for $3.99 on the PS store for my PS4 Pro.. can't wait to try this game out :)
The combination of this game and my new job is what finally got me to buy a headset. Can't wait for the oculus to launch.
Got it on PS Plus but never played it due to EA wanting my email so to hell with them
Don't you have a throw-away email?
I was sitting on the fence with this title, waiting for any news on the VR experience. After this review, it looks like it's worth getting if you already have a VR headset.
Great review, thanks mate!
Can you do a third person camera angle or is it all in the cockpit?
Is the flight play similiar to that of the new Battlefront 2?
Not really no
3:06 what the hell was that?
Why?
If you are refering to the weird tie fighter, it's a tie advanced, you can see the inquisitors using them in Rebels
Gaëtan DANET nah was referring to him flying directly into the star destroyer
@@shannonxiiify My bad ahahah
Are you referring to bumping into the star destroyer and not dying. That is lame game mechanic
For some reason as of now..I haven't purchased this yet?? I think I'll get on that right away! This looks visually beautiful!
I’ve been hoping for a game like this ever since Jedi starfighter.
Just got this on black Friday sale, physical edition for $20 🙃
Man I really want this game but I feel like the flying mechanics could be a lot smoother. Turning looks kind of rigid to me.
Pops Turning in the game with a mouse and keyboard is so awful I got a refund because of it and the game was really buggy I wasn’t even able to connect to my EA account
Adjust the options menu mouse sensitivity and mouse movement range - They're pretty high by default requiring huge moves on average DPI, but I squashed them into a smaller circle in the middle of the screen and it feels a lot more responsive now.
I too disliked the slow turn of ships in this game but I get why they did it. With fast turning, the game could probably promote turreting on low speeds, while slower turns make movie-like dogfights more probable. Takes getting used to but it's legit fun once I did, really solid game.
And hey, we're discussing the merits of a AAA space sim (arcadey one, sure, but still) - WHAT YEAR IS THIS?!
This isn't Battlefront, its better.
@@Alex_Logan22 Battlefront starfighter were easy to learn and 3rd person is something that I cant play SW game without

I’m very much looking forward to this
Who though it was 6/10 judging from video's timeline?
Blender Geek shock when I saw that 6
Lol yeah got trolled by this too
I think this game might be a test of concept. I would love for them to come out with another game with a more robust single player mode, like remaking x-wing alliance. If they come out w a DLC that lets me relive key battles from the movies I’ll totally be for it.
It's a great campaign, the A-Wing is just amazing
It looks like there's no planet missions like the old rogue squadron games, like taking out a convoy. That's disappointing. Dive bombing tanks and stuff in VR would be fun.
I'm a couple missions into the campain and it's impressive with my vr flight sim rig. It would be amazing to fly through iconic cities and landscapes though. Hoth speeders would be crazy.
The problem with me in Star Wars squadrons game is that the two stories (empire and rebels) are way to similar it’s practically the same thing but the two difference are your with the empire or rebels and there are different missions. Another problem I have with the game is that your character does way to much and I know it’s a game but at least ha e your other members of yours squadrons do something right?
All I asked for was a remastered revenge of the sith game
Can't wait to play this with my Index. O.O
Thanks for this SP review and being so clear in the title. Generally avoid high-profile reviews for mixed SP/MP games because I could give a toss about MP. So this was useful to me.

“It’s as basic as Star Wars stories will ever be. 10 out of 10”
You just ignored the entire rest of the review
Finally a proper sequel to star fox
i really wish they included what xwa had for storytelling. i thought the email system and room was very immersive. Imagine that today in more of a walk around immersive environment.
Can we change the viewing angle? Or is just going to be from the cockpit? /:
Why are all the empire characters emo edge lords?
Cause they’re darks
That's just the type of personality the Empire's propaganda machine heavily promotes
They aren’t all that way, Grey has a unique personality
The High Ground some emos have personalities too
Cause the empire are a bunch of incels
Looks fun! My only complaint: the starfighters seem to be flying way too slowly at a leisurely 50 mph.
If I'm attacking a Star Destroyer I'm going to be screaming past at like Mach 2 to avoid turbolaser fire & missiles.
