I like manga bc it saves me the time and effort of having large descriptions of the scenery or the characters like in novels and keeps me focused on the dialogs and history. I also like subjects revolving around manga, Bakuman is one of my fav works for a reason.
Yeah, I get why people like descriptive language but I do prefer having visuals to tell the story instead. I'd also love to read Bakuman in the future (I own it all), but I just haven't had the chance yet!
I believe that it's not that "the pacing is better" it's more like I can control the pacing by how I like to read it, I don't need to abide to the rules of time like I need in anime
The reason why I enjoy novels more than anime and even manga is that I usually enjoy the characters more because I’m not limited in imagination of what the characters look like. Like you could show me a picture of a dragon and I would be like “that’s a dragon” but if I read it I would imagine a “ giant man eating lizard that breathes flames the temperature of the sun”.

Amazing video as always! I admit that I only started reading manga due to being impatient to find out what would happen next to the anime, but over time I grew to love manga more to the point that I would rarely watch anime now and just read the manga. The reason I loved manga more now is due to how it can be read at your own pace similarly to novels. Each individual panel is independent of each other and you can stay on a single page to absorb each panel for as long as you want without losing continuity and without losing immersion to it. As for anime (and film/video media in general), if you want to focus on a frame, you need to either pause it or rewatch the part, and it breaks the continuity of it since by pausing the video, you're reminded that its just a video and not real so you lose immersion to it. And I have to replay stuff a lot when watching anime, especially the amazingly animated large scale fight scenes, because I just cant keep up with the overwhelming amount of visual and audio information. That being said though, I still absolutely love both mediums.

But yeah, what you mentioned is true about panels! I think one thing of note is that panels have varying sizes as well but, in anime, all frames are the same size. What this means is that a small comedy panel in the corner of the page is now suddenly taking up the whole screen in the anime. It is what it is, but I do think that hurts anime adaptations just a bit for me. Oh, and thank you!

Yeah, that's fair enough. I'm kinda the inverse: I typically only watch anime if I either don't plan to read the manga or I am such a big fan of the manga I wanna see the anime. Well, that or if it's anime original, which I typical enjoy more than adaptations.
For me manga is the ideal mix between novels and Anime. Ironically I liked both of these artforms before I ever read a single volume of manga. As a child I read tons and tons of regular books which admittedly helped a lot regarding vocabulary and other generel language skills. But I also used to skip over entire paragraphs of scenery descriptions simply because that did nothing for me. In that sense, as you described, manga helps with my aphantasia because the burden of visualization is on the author not the reader. It does this while obviously retaining somebqualities of a novel such as the highly malleable speed of consumption. All things considered I don't know why it took me so long to get into it....but all things are well rhat end well and as succ it's an absoutely great form of art!

Interestingly enough I actually first noticed that something was not quite right with my mind's eye through crime dramas. Because whenever a victim or bystander was asked to describe the suspect I was perplexed how people were able to do that. It's certainly an interesting condition.
Hey I checked out your anilist and didn't see this so, my manga taste probably won't fit you but if your looking for a good romance/deep/sad manga to read I very much so reccomend three days of happiness as it's short and in just 17 chapters makes one of the most deep story's I can imagine questioning life's values and what the monetary value of a person's life is worth and ofcourse enchanced by the romace going on between the protagnists as well (I'm not very good at giving a description but It is one of my favorite manga even though it's short and I think you should judge for yourself if you havent read it already)
Hey thanks for checking out my anilist! I have indeed read it, I think it just shows up with the Japanese name which is why you might not have seen it. But yeah, I really liked it! I sometimes struggle getting invested in shorter stories (that's why I'm a TV guy, not a movie guy) but I remember thinking it was particularly good for a 3 volume work. It's been since 2019 that I read it, so I think a reread would be nice because I think I may have undervalued it the first time!

The reason I started reading manga was due to the anime that got me hooked into the story would end or not be finished and so I turned to the manga that’s either still being written or finished getting to experience it on my own and be more immersed
I like seeing inked out images there's something raw about it as if the visuals are boiled down to the most polarizing and base colors in existence I liked your viewpoint on how your love of manga is seperate from anime I feel like sometimes manga and anime need to be treated more seperately if I'm honest this is not an attempt at segregating the mediums but more so to have them both be their own individual not one that relies on the other and vice versa and helping to outline their strengths and differences for example you brought up Gurren Lagann which I see as a perfect example of an anime show which is made for anime both creatively and intrinsicately theres something about seeing a series spawn from a medium and use that mediums strengths to the extreme Gurren Lagann for anime IMO and Berserk for Manga (Its an easy example) I have a sort of diquiet for the industrial path of anime and manga where the latter uses the former promote its sales and spread the series and how the latters seems to be used as a second step for the latter rather than being its own thing

I feel like a lot of the most popular anime of the 2000s and earlier were originals (or heavily deviated from the source material). I dunno if it's just me but I don't think we've had the same quality or quantity of anime originals. Obviously, I love a good adaptation of manga but, yeah, I do think a lot of anime productions rely on source material a bit too much.
Manga is the furthest thing from sensory overload. Thats a real nugget of truth im going to hold on too. I hope i can offer you a similar gift. Tldr i think youd like ersgon by Christopher Paolini. On the subject of your aphantasia and its effect on your experience reading novels. May i recommend eragon? The first book in the inheritence series, i consider it a cornerstone of my life. Christopher paolini has been described to me as tolkien for babies. Thats why its amazing though. The language isnt flowery. But its incredibly well researched and often uses specific words that mean exactly what hes describing. Small spoilers here that ill use as an example. Early on theres a need to construct a saddle for a large animal. But all they have material wise is a pile of tanned buckskins, as well as a knife and a hole punching tool. Paolini explains its construction, the specific shapes and pieces needed. Making some leather into cordage and properly hand stitching the pieces together. Its all clearly based on real methods he researched. One last spoiler. The books subtly presents how to safely experiment with substances. Alchohol comes up a decent amount. And this one time. Its crazy subtle. But he does psychedelics. I think the effects described are acid. Its a you know if you know scenario, and i think paolini knows 😏
Some stories can only be told as manga (Oyasumi Punpun, Uzumaki, Vagabond, etc). But some stories are told better in anime (Demon Slayer, Attack on Titan, Dress Up Darling). It's all on how much you take advantage of the medium. For example Cowboy Bebop is an anime original and it can't have been told in manga format. But Berserk's art is so godlike, CG anime can't capture it the same way (although the 90s anime is a classic).
Absolutely. I mean, it isn't that those series are completely impossible to adapt into anime, but it would take a director and staff that really know how to do it. Something like Punpun would have to be a little experimental by nature and I'm not sure who I would trust it with. Maybe Science Saru? I don't know. Something like Berserk/Vagabond would have to forgo sakuga and detailed art and make up for it elsewhere (Berserk 97's color design, background art, and music, for example). At the end of the day, some works are just better fit for their medium because their creator was a master of the craft. Same applies to anime, of course.
The main appeal for manga to me is that I already enjoyed reading American comics beforehand. But the stale nature of superhero storytelling made me bored after a while, and the community for indie comics was too small for me to get invested. Not to mention that manga is MUCH cheaper to buy.
The argument that anime has a better approach just because it hase movement, color and sound is not a valid argument. Manga is so much more than anime, it‘s a literal artwork holding in your hands while also progressing through a storyline. It combines the superb feeling of consuming a compelling book and visiting a mesuem exhibition of your favourite artist, whilst you can also collect them and build up a personal bond to the work itself.

Again, sorry for jumping the gun and making assumptions about what you said. I would say try not to use 2nd person when describing your own feelings. That's part of what threw me off. However, you used 1st person in your last comment and your feelings came across a lot more personal, I would say. At the end of the day, as manga readers, we have to understand that some anime fans like seeing a story with animation or voice acting and that is totally valid. In the same way we love the bond we have with manga, others can have that or anime or any other medium. And that's good, so long as everyone is happy with what they love! Thank you, that means a lot! I watched Vinland Saga and I just adored the characters and story so much I had to find out what happened next. That's what got me into manga.

It isn't my preferred genre (I tend to lose patience after awhile), but I do like a handful of them and get why others like the genre more than me
it's so so easy to lose hours reading manga if you're not careful...
