Yard Leveling. Compact Tractor Tiller and Soil Pulverizer cleanup after sewer repair.

  • A local fiber optic company drilled through Greg's sewer line causing a lot of damage. They fixed the sewer line but left the front yard in a mess. Tractor Time with Tim uses the John Deere 1025R, tiller and land pulverizer to smooth and level the yard so Greg can reseed and be able to mow his grass without scalping.

    Lot of people ask why buy a tiller. Like you said it is very versatile, more than just gardening. I have used it like you as a way of breaking the ground to do some digging too.

      Hopefully this will help you choose.

    I can hardly wait!! I go pick up my "John Jr." this Saturday and will have my very own tiller too! I did end up with the 1025r because they couldn't find the 2025 available anywhere at this time. So love watching your videos! Can't wait till I get to have one too!

    • @TractorTimewithTim
      @TractorTimewithTim  6 років тому +1

      Wow, if you want the 2025r, why would you let a few weeks delay influence that decision.
      Also, consider going with a more distant dealer.
      They can find you a tractor if you tell them that they don’t get your money otherwise.
      They have no motive to find what you want when they can sell you what they have on the lot.

    • @bvonhaugg
      @bvonhaugg 6 років тому

      Tractor Time with Tim honestly, I really like the 1025r, the extra 4k doesn't seem worth it to me just for a larger tire, slightly higher volume hydro pump, and the extra 6inch of lift. I'll be happy with the 1025r for now....

    • @kenscharfe7414
      @kenscharfe7414 6 років тому

      I'm with Tim, Brad. I would be more inclined to find a more "Customer Friendly" dealership. I would be concerned with follow up service relationship.

    • @bvonhaugg
      @bvonhaugg 6 років тому +1

      let me put this right.....my dealership is absolutely amazing and its not that they won't get me the 2025 its that I really want the 1025....don't have the need for the upgrade... I deal with Tennessee Tractor in Ripley, TN and Thereasa has been my sales lady for over 3 years now and she is nothing short of amazing! The dealership as a whole on service and sales has been unbeatable including working with me to get me the BEST deal possible. I have zero issues with Tennessee Tractor.....she could have easily gotten me a 2025 if that's what I wanted but its not. She had a 1025 lined up for me coming from another location but that dealership messed up badly and didn't mark it as sold....she was mad. She worked diligently to find me another one no matter where is was coming from....ended up coming from GA! so, please don't think there is a problem with the dealer...i've delt with bad dealers and would never buy a pack of gum from them....but, when a dealer has stellar customer service and performance as this one I will go to no end to support them with my business!

    Only way you could do better is by having a Harley Rake. Short of that the tiller, a packer and hand time with a rake is as good as it gets. Dealing with sod clumps is a royal pain though.
    Good job Tim making it work using the tools you have!!

    In watching how you leveled the yard, it reminded me of a technique that I used with my tiller. I found that if I either remove or fasten the rear tiller guard/shield so it is open, I can till going backwards. I then lift the tiller until the blades were at the "finished" soil level I want. When going backwards, the effect is that the spinning tiller blades push the dirt backwards and the soil is left smooth and level. This turned out better than trying to make the front bucket a leveling device.

    Fantastic Job Tim I do not think the problem with the pulverizer was operator error I don't think they are designed to work in areas where there is sod under the dirt or soil the front tines or rakes kind of act like a thatch rake or something and catch the thatch and sod and bring it up to the top of the soil there lies the problem as you discovered they work great in nothing but dirt and soil but not in soil over grass. One suggestion although I do not think it would apply to this customer looking at his lawn if the customer wants a really nice lawn free of weeds and stuff before tilling and prepping have the customer sprat the area with roundup and kill the area before you come. The best way to get a GOOD kill is to spray the area and then come back about 4 to 6 days later and spray again do not use the stuff that kills or yellows the grass ans weeds in 24 hours you want the slow acting kind believe it or not the slower it kills the better kill you will get I promise you we do several lawns every fall and over the years I have tried several different ways if you are killing out common bermuda spray it 3 to 4 times if you dont kill the bad grass and weeds even with all the tilling you do the roots are still there and it will come back another thing i don't like to use is straw over the seed it creates a bad weed problem and thatch i have killed 2 acre yards and no straw and the seed did great now these yards were irrigated i have 3/4 to an acre lawn and have done it with out irrigation and used garden hoses and sprinklers. Great video as usual hope everyone is doing well have a great week and God Bless!!!

      @TractorTimewithTim  6 років тому

      Agree with all you've said. Have used the roundup trick many times.
      Really didn't know what we were up against here. didn't think the ruts went so far out until we got to working at it. If you noticed, the initial tilling didn't cover the entire area. I didn't know we would be working on that large of an area until well into the project.

    Some of those companies that sell top soil in the areas where you do jobs for people should prove that the soil can actually grow a crop instead of having it tested by someone they have in there back pocket to fudge the numbers before they sell each batch of top soil cause I don't think it would grow potatoes

    I have a question for you, after a till a yard with my tractor, I end up with a lot of turf on top. I’ll go through it a good 3 times, but the turf doesn’t get chopped up. Any ideas? Box scraping up the turf?Thanks.

    • @TractorTimewithTim
      @TractorTimewithTim  3 роки тому

      Good question.
      I solve this by killing the grass two weeks earlier with roundup or another non selective herbicide. Allow the grass time to die, then it will be much easier to till.
      If there is not time for that, I till it repeatedly deeper and deeper each time to mix the sod in as much as possible.

We moved to a place on close to 4 acres with a nice sized poleshed and the lawn is beating me up bad mowing it with my 2017 2032r deere. I was thinking of ordering a couple dump truck loads of topsoil and filling then back dragging the nastiest spots with my loader or maybe doing a skim cut on the lawn. Maybe I need to invest in a nice tiller! I can't keep mowing the lawn as is. Anyways thanks for sharing! 👍👍

    Tim, you need a York Rake to do your final grading after tilling, and you have had multiple videos in the past where I thought a York Rake would have helped

      Tim, I've got a project coming up and was thinking a landscape rake may be helpful. With this application do you feel like it would have been a bonus? We've got fairly rocky soil here in SW Michigan and I'm thinking after tilling having a rake on hand would be handy.

      I’ve had several projects where a landscape rake would have helped. ...and inexpensive. The only one I have used is the one on the Ventrac.

    Food for thought what about operating the pulverizer backwards? My guess is you wanted it to compact it?

    • @TractorTimewithTim
      @TractorTimewithTim  6 років тому +1

      The desired purpose was to compact and perform some final leveling.
      While testing in my garden, I found that the teeth combined with the roller did a great job of both of those tasks.
      I'm convinced this would have worked except for the sod. Having said that, I think another 3-5 trips with the tiller might have destroyed the sod enough to have made it work even in this scenario.

    thought i had seen all of your videos. was thinking of renting the pulverizer but after that i think i will just keep tilling and using the loader bucket to fix my yard. Did you start with the tail gate open more or just leave it down most of the time on the Tiller?

      Honestly, we don’t water much, at least typically. We have such good soil. It holds moisture well, and it is soft enough for the plants to root down nicely.

    Hey Tim, as always a great video. I have a question for you and anyone else who wants to chime in. I just started using my 3 pt hitch this winter on my 2017 1025r with a rear mount blower. I notice the first few times I raise it up I get a odd noise when it stops after lifting. It's quick and sharp and then it's gone. Only does it the first couple of times. The tractor is in a heated shop and the blower is only about 400lbs. I just wondered if yours ever does that lifting that tiller?

    So for land that has a bunch of rocks (East Tennessee) what would you suggest for doing the same job you did here?
    Would a box blade with the scarfiers down to do the digging be the best bet? Then after it gets dug up, use the box blade to level it out.??

    I have to agree with the loading and unloading process. It never seems to fail that the time spent loading and unloading equals the job time but you never get paid for loading all the tools up! And the time you say you dont need a implement to save some time loading is the time you need it the most.
