Thank you for this review! I have been debating between the fat and the moon/clean faced cosmetics eye coal for a minute! This helped me make my decision!
Have you done a cost comparison of zero waste and typical waste lifestyles. For some odd reason I am finding products that are more sustainable, use less packaging, etc. to be more expensive than their regular counterparts.
Jason Hunt yes that’s generally the case - due to small batch manufacturing, better ingredients, less filler, fair wages and working conditions. However for many products you can buy them used, which is sustainable AND affordable. Win win.
depends what brands you normally buy stuff from haha if you buy from the drug store normally then it's definitely more expensive, but if you're buying from sephora, then it's either normal prices or sometimes a bit cheaper XD
In the US, Whole Foods has become alot more affordable with the amazon buyout so I am finding lots of fruits and veggies without packaging to be cheaper. In terms of make up, i've generally have only been able to find cruelty free/vegan items that work for my skin but unfortunately have bad packaging. 100% pure which was mentioned in the video has very few dark shades which I need for my skintone. So some of us cant even find alternatives for zero waste lifestyles yet. Wearing no makeup often has been very inexpensive tho.
Yep, as other people have said, that does tend to be the case, but products for zero waste or reduced waste lifestyles are also often longer lasting than for the typical lifestyles that pay no mind to the amount of waste produced. Zero wasters or people who try to produce less waste usually happen to be people who also don’t really have “fancy” or indulgent lifestyles-usually people whose values revolve around more natural/organic ways of living. For makeup specifically, a lot of zero wasters don’t tend to wear makeup everyday, so the makeup they do buy will last longer. It may be more expensive in the short run and sometimes even in the long run, depending on the specific products and brands one might buy, but for many people who like to buy zero waste or reduced waste products, it really isn’t about the money; it’s about how we want to live. If the lifestyle doesn’t suit you because of the costs or any other reason, I would suggest to just do what you can and/or what you’re willing to do to reduce your waste. A lot of people have to make compromises in some aspect of their lives because it is hard in this day and age to be zero waste, or even just less wasteful, but like Kate said, it isn’t about being perfect.
For me I just realised that the single products ARE more expensive but I just don't buy that much anymore! Before my zero waste life style I just bought random stuff when I was in the drug store which is not the case anymore :)
The only thing that bothers me with trying to go zero waste is that unless I do my own products, I’m more likely to have to buy things online that need to be shipped across seas to get to me. That could be by plane or boat most likely using petroleum, and then a truck to bring the delivery to my pickup location. That is most likely resulting in a lot of CO2 as well. For example: washing powder. Either I can buy it in the store or by laundry nuts from India, which is such a waste of transport. BUT then again I guess most stuff is being produced in Asia anyways... living in Sweden means few things are produced locally hahah
Anna, no need. Reduce your spending is one of the Rs meaning you dont really need all that imported crap. Nobody died from not wearing make up. I dont wear any 99% of the time. You have to.learn to like yourself and dont mind toxic people. Being natural is good for your skin. And quit trying to impress and compete with other people unless you are a movie star with buckets load of cash???? Common sense? Use the make up you already own? Dont be lazy !!!!!
I love your videos. The makeup looks great!! I think it's so much about using what you love. Making all the changes towards less waist is great. That way when it comes to makeup its ok if everything isn't perfect. I want my items to be hygienic and well protected. Companies have come a long way so even if there is still plastic the reduction of it is huge.
Looked lovely and so great to see you spreading the zero waste message! I don't wear make up myself but you've swayed me to try making my own beetroot lip tint and maybe trying the coco bronzer for a change/when I want to be fancy :)
I've been binge watching your videos, they're so helpful. And so glad you found a zero waste food shop in London that is in SW and not all the way east! Can't wait to visit in the new year.
I love that their is little or no plastic used in some of the packages but I do have an issue with double dipping brushes into products to reuse them. Its an easy way to spread bacteria.
I love this! I just started my youtube channel after realizing how toxic and wasteful a lot of beauty and fashion is. You are inspiring and I'm definitely subscribing :)
I wonder how long the lip and cheek stains would last? Although they look lovely, in my experience they do not last a reasonable amount of time on the skin.
I feel like I have x20 times the makeup products you have, maybe it's time to get rid of some. But ugh, I think I need to gain more confidence before I can do with that little makeup on a day to day basis. You are so gorgeous, as well as spreading an important message. Damn I wanna be like you.
Adorable video and I love the do what you can attitude. I don’t know anything about the channel that’s mentioned in the comments, but keep up the good work here! Btw, totally crushing on your look.
Please make more videos! You should make a video of all the blogs, sites, books, or of general information outlets you use to educated yourself on all this stuff!
I love that red color on you and it's exactly the shade that works on me too - I used to have a chanel-lipstick like that. I got a red bodyshop one that I don't feel comfortable in at all. I cannot tell why - too shiny? Just something little off with the color?
Really enjoyed your video and interesting makeup finds ! 🌷 maybe you address it in another video but I’m wondering what you use for sunscreen? I see you have beautiful skin and am curious how you protect it 💜
Couleur Caramel from France are also quite good with their packaging (better than 100% Pure) and the quality is great. You should look into their products next time.
Such a nice video, gave me quite some inspiration! For eyebrow powder, maybe it's an idea to press some cocoa powder into a metal pan (using some alcohol), so you can dip a slanted brush in there :)
Check out Axiology’s lipstick colour Worth, if you want to try to replace your 100% Pure lipstick with another one that’s plastic-free. It’s an orange-red. The packaging is very luxe and recyclable metal.
I love everything apart from the brushes. Ecotools do amazing ones, that are cruelty free and made from bamboo (the handles). I have asked about the brushes and they come from goats in China, that are shaved before slaughter because the meat industry needs them to be for sanitary reasons. It isn’t necessary to use this type is ‘natural’ in my opinion and it is a choice I find upsetting. I care a lot more about how animals are treated than the world having a little more plastic.
Helen Williams I totally understand and respect your point. It’s hard to make the best decision and you just have to make the best decision for you. I wanted to point out, as someone who avoids plastic, that there’s also the consideration that plastic kills birds and marine life. So, plastic alternatives to animal products can still lead to animal suffering. Just something else to consider.
Out of The Hat human are poisoning the world. Should we kill them? Now serius, i understand what you are saying but se can not save the world killing animals! And put them to pain... And for last its just makeup! Use your fingers not dead animals!
Great video and full of info. I've been sesrching for some items and this helps. Thanks for the hair update..love your natural color. You are one who looks amazing with short hair by the way.
Hi Kate I love your channel! I was wondering if the « fat and the moon » eyeliner-mascara smudges ? Because i used a french brand but i can only use it as a smoky eye eyeliner. I am desperate to find a zero/less waste mascara.
I was just wondering - what foundation shade are you in other foundations - Im trying to figure out which shade to get but i can't figure out whether I'm lighter or darker than you?
I am very tempted by lots of zero waste makeup but they often contain activated charcoal which often has to be made at very high temperatures-anybody know of the implications of this? i.e. waste involved in the fuel to get it to such high temperatures. I'm often weary with these things whether zero waste just offsets the wastage to another source i.e. fuel for heating, cooking, burning, re-washing etc.
why don't we try to find a natural alternative to mascara? i.e. bees wax or any similar product to give our lashes a touch of popping out without makeup?
Have been waiting for this video and am so excited... Thank you! Question: any luck finding zero waste, sustainable, and organic material bra's. I can't seem to find any. Help!
Are you using a beauty filter of some sort? Your face seems very blurred out in some bits and then in focus at other times. I only ask because of the interest in natural products, but needing more full coverage so it does make a difference to me re: what I can expect.
B ma I doubt they would as they are a small family run business in an English seaside town. They might ship overseas but I don't know about costing for that. NB The best thing to do with vodka and citrus is to drink it.
Does the Fat and the Moon eye coal smudge when used as a mascara? I just received it and I was so excited to try it, but it never seemed to "dry" and was constantly leaving little lash prints on my lids. I want this to work as a dual product (mascara and eyeliner) so badly and I'm wondering if its just user error or the product is just not meant for my lashes. Any tips?
This looks great! :D The olive oil & cloth idea is really useful. =) How long do these products stay on? The products I tried in the past usually smugded really quickly. :(
Hi Kate! I was wondering if you have any tips of what to do or where to send empty make-up containers? I have empty mascara tubes and eyeshadow pallets that I really want to avoid putting in the general waste bin! Do you know of any drop-off points where they recycle make-up packaging (UK)? I cant seem to find anything online...
In the US there is an organization that takes old mascara wands to clean baby animals, www.appalachianwild.org/wands-for-wildlife.html Not sure if there is something similar in the UK, best of luck with your search
I can very much advise you all to try Gaya cosmetics. They produce make up made from natrual minerals only. The packaging is not 100% plastic free but there are absolutely no plastic chemicals in there wich could be washed into out water.
Anybody have any suggestions on how you store your mascara wand for like travel and stuff? I don’t want to put it in the bag loose after I’ve used it and get mascara everywhere
I saw this video and purchased FAT & THE MOON EYE COAL to use as a mascara and it couldn’t have gone worse. By the afternoon, with out fail, I have eye coal in the under eye region giving me the appearance of a raccoon. Does anyone have tricks to applying this product?
Does anyone know of zero/low waste products or beauty hacks that would work with darker skin tones. The cocoa bronzer, for instance, sounds interesting but surely wouldn't show up on deeper complexions.
Hello!! I stumbled across your video on the hunt for some organic makeup brands. After seeing that you weren't vegan, I was interested in hearing why... I just read your 'foodlosophy' and honestly I found myself agreeing with most of it!! Wow. I'm not sure how to process this. I've been an adamant veggie since 11 and flirting with veganism for about 5 years. Recently I've been distancing myself more and more from veganism because I've become more aware of its environmental impact - and I can't stand the hypocrisy of those who act like their lifestyle is 100% guilt free, simply because they don't consume animal products. Its clearly a more complex issue. I've also struggled with my health for a while (IBS, anemia, low energy). I keep hearing stories of ex veggies feeling healthier when including organic/grass fed/free range etc animals in their diet. I'm seriously reconsidering what it means to be a conscious eater/consumer. The problem is... I can't stomach the idea of eating flesh! Even if I knew the farming practises were good. The animal was happy. Even if I could dismiss the feeling I have that killing animals is just wrong (for instance, if I found road kill, or if I knew meat was going to be thrown away if I didn't eat it). I still feel sick at the thought of flesh in my mouth!!! Is this due to years of not eating it? Is this something I should try to overcome? I haven't had cravings for meat in years and the smell and sight disgusts me. Logically I would be striving to consume food in a similar way to the way you outlined. But emotionally, I don't know if I can do it. There's still a huge part of me that's like OK I don't want animals to be harmed for my sake, full stop!!! And one of the best way to do this is to abstain from the animal farming industry - how can I guarantee that the farm I buy cheese from is treating the cows with respect? How can I know the farm I buy eggs from isn't killing hundreds of male chicks at birth? The one thing I can consider is eating fish again. My dad is a fisherman and I grew up around many a dead fish. I used to go fishing, kill and gut fish, eat it for dinner. I feel slightly desensitised to the body of a dead fish. Maybe the desensitisation to dead bodies is the more natural way to go about things. God knows we have a weird attitude to death in western culture. (On the note of fish, you say you don't buy fish unless line or pot caught... Do you avoid net caught because of its scale? Lobster/crab pots are used on the same sort of scale as netting. Obviously trawling is terrible but my dad set-nets in shore in his small boat and his method of fishing is pretty old school. He doesn't catch much and he works by the season. If I were to eat meat, I would have no worries about the eco impact of eating fish he caught. Fisherman like my dad need all the support they can get too!) Anyway I'm not sure if you'll see this but if you do, I want to say thank you for talking honestly about this subject, it's so refreshing. I'm going to do some further research and have a think about what I can do. :) How did you feel about the visceral act of eating flesh when you came back to it after so long?
It's so sad.I had a lot of expectations about the product you use on your eyes like a mascara/eye shadow (FAT & THE MOON EYE COAL) but it doesn't dry down on mine. Ok, only if you are not ready to burn 5 almonds, mix it with coconut oil for a very similar effect.
Hi Kate. I watched a few of your Anglophenia videos and just wanted to say that your hairstyle in those videos was excellent. It looked modern, playful, fashionable and likable. The person who came up with that hairstyle must be a real artist. I hope it's not lost completely and you consider going back to that at some point in the future. Also, I hope you consider making more videos like the Anglophenia videos. Cheers
Your longer hair from 2 years ago was amazing! But you're adorable anyway. By the way, unfortunately this channel doesn't appeal me so much, but I totally loved Anglophenia and was wondering if you have another channel or might be thinking about returning to Anglophenia? Bye!
I looooove the fat and the moon eye coal also!! I was so surprised how well it worked as a mascara. Did you know they also carry a highlighter as well? I like it. It’s very subtle.
I agree with her completely. Being vegetarian just made me sick, plus vegans use so many oil derived products I don't know how they can claim that they don't harm animals (it is more indirect but just as bad if not worse).
The science is in, a whole-food, bulk based, package free, vegan diet is the best for the planet. However, if all meat eaters were zero waste, that would be one of the best compromises we could hope for.
Oh, yeah.. I totally agree with you! It just that I think that being vegan makes so much sense when you want to be zero waste and minimalist, that I don't understand why zero waste people don't go vegan. But sure, being zero waste is already much better than nothing. :)
So .. I just read the blog post and for those (or even Kate) who might be interested in someone else's thoughts about it, here is what I have to say: I agree with a lot of what she says, especially that veganism is possibly not the only answer to the environmental issues. But I also think we can care for the environment, the soil and everything else and also care for the animals and be vegans. We don't know for sure if a plant based diet is healthier for everyone, as we don't know for sure if a meat based diet is healthy at all. These things change all the time and we are in a big experiment. But I think if we have the option, we should be vegans for the animals. But not only vegans, we should do so much more than that .. like following the eco friendly way. Some people might say "but you can't find a vegan and eco friendly alternative for wool!".. sure we can! Look at the amount of things we created so far.. :) And it is all beautiful when Kate (and me and you and a whole bunch of other people) says that it is better to look at the chain of what you are consuming - despite what it is - than being an abusive vegan. But have you realized that most of the people don't have the option of consuming only eco friendly, fair trade, sustainable etc stuff? Because of its price, because of its availability or anything that can prive people from those options (not everyone lives in Europe!).. and that being vegan may be the most - or only - available option they have to reduce their foot print on the world? Well, these are just some thoughts we can have on her post.. we have a lot more material to talk about, but, as she hopes, let's move on! I was just curious anyway.. :)
Skip to 5:57 to get to the makeup part
I feel like you have such a classic beautiful 50’s face. Lol idk how to explain it. Your features are very soft yet prominent. Coral lip looks amazing on you!
try an eyelash curler, i like using tools before products as you can create something out of nothing basically, makes lushes look lush :D
I miss your videos Kate! Come BAAAAACK!

Looked lovely and so great to see you spreading the zero waste message! I don't wear make up myself but you've swayed me to try making my own beetroot lip tint and maybe trying the coco bronzer for a change/when I want to be fancy :)
How long lasting is the makeup? Looking good!
you look soo much better with brown hair ! Really suits you. Looks natural. I'm going to look into these products, I like your simple makeup style x
instead of dipping your brush in the jar...adding bacteria, sprinkle some in a dish or small bowl..that way you keep everything completely clean.
I've been binge watching your videos, they're so helpful. And so glad you found a zero waste food shop in London that is in SW and not all the way east! Can't wait to visit in the new year.
Any tips on stopping the mascara from smudging absolutely everywhere? I haven't had much luck...
Thank you!
Setting around the eyes with powder helps a lot
I love that their is little or no plastic used in some of the packages but I do have an issue with double dipping brushes into products to reuse them. Its an easy way to spread bacteria.

one lip pencil 10 euros

Helen Williams agree! I was once trying to shop for a more natural tooth brush and the lady in the natural shop tried to sell me one with pig hair!
If you look at the impact of extracting oil on wildlife and the environment then using plastic kills more animals than using animal bristles.
but plastic is poisoning the earth for thousands of years, its a much worse problem

Hi kate.Make video on perfumes/fragrance, please.
B ma Have you tried the Eden Perfumes website? They make natural vegan copies of designer fragrances and I love them! 😊
Katie M yet to try, main problem is that they don't have outlet in India.
B ma there is an easy citrus peel and vodka perfume you can make at home with scraps :)
B ma I doubt they would as they are a small family run business in an English seaside town. They might ship overseas but I don't know about costing for that. NB The best thing to do with vodka and citrus is to drink it.
Yay, you're back!
What do you use as an eyeshadow primer? My shadow creases so bad and I haven’t found anything that prevents creasing yet.
what fragrance would you recommend?
Beautiful! I really love your hair color too.
Your makeup today looks lovely.
Loved this video! And I love your channel!
You recomend ecotools brushes for zero waste make up? I dont know if their brushes are biodegradable
Have you done a video on silicone ? I hear it’s eco friendly ? Is it ? Please and thank you :)

Came here to ask that tooooo! 😂
Coco powder ❤️ I need to try it
I've never heard of Fat & The Moon. Great video ☺
Love this! Is the foundation oil based? Looks lovely on your skin but I’m quite oily in my t-zone.
nk1 yes it’s primarily avocado butter
lovely..
Anybody have any suggestions on how you store your mascara wand for like travel and stuff? I don’t want to put it in the bag loose after I’ve used it and get mascara everywhere
Just an FYI I checked out Urbapothecary Lip and Cheek Stain and it no longer exists :( I loved the color....
What are the natural bristles made from? Are they vegan?
That foundation was amazing!
Small forest dweller it's animal hair
Ah ok, thanks
I saw this video and purchased FAT & THE MOON EYE COAL to use as a mascara and it couldn’t have gone worse. By the afternoon, with out fail, I have eye coal in the under eye region giving me the appearance of a raccoon. Does anyone have tricks to applying this product?

Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!
Sooooooo long introduction, please! Show the products.... please!!
What are nano particles? :)
What happened to Anglophenia?
Cocoa powder as bronzer?? My shitty skin could never...

Fisherman like my dad need all the support they can get too!)
Anyway I'm not sure if you'll see this but if you do, I want to say thank you for talking honestly about this subject, it's so refreshing. I'm going to do some further research and have a think about what I can do. :)
How did you feel about the visceral act of eating flesh when you came back to it after so long?
It's so sad.I had a lot of expectations about the product you use on your eyes like a mascara/eye shadow (FAT & THE MOON EYE COAL) but it doesn't dry down on mine. Ok, only if you are not ready to burn 5 almonds, mix it with coconut oil for a very similar effect.
You are lovely! Subscribed! 🦄
You look beautiful without makeup. And what’s more zero waste than natural beauty? :D
Cheers
That I'm so hot speech bouble is a understatement you are gorgeous.
I think I love you
Your longer hair from 2 years ago was amazing! But you're adorable anyway. By the way, unfortunately this channel doesn't appeal me so much, but I totally loved Anglophenia and was wondering if you have another channel or might be thinking about returning to Anglophenia? Bye!
you really look like millie bobbi Brown its scary
If you keep pulling your eyelids like that, you are going to cause premature aging; crepey skin and wrinkles.
I looooove the fat and the moon eye coal also!! I was so surprised how well it worked as a mascara. Did you know they also carry a highlighter as well? I like it. It’s very subtle.
Too hot
I just don't understand why you are not vegan!
Thank you! I didn't know about this post.. going to read it! :)
So .. I just read the blog post and for those (or even Kate) who might be interested in someone else's thoughts about it, here is what I have to say:
I agree with a lot of what she says, especially that veganism is possibly not the only answer to the environmental issues.
wtf!!
