- With the 3.91 rear gear ratio, it's no fun driving on the highway. So I decided to swap the original rear axle back in with the 2.93 gears. But I hit a snag.

Dang! So sorry. I bought a 8.25 out of a 74 dart. Cracked open when I got it home and found all kind of water damage. It’s going to need total rebuild. It’s a 2.94:1 ratio.
Water getting into stuff sucks, but this was my fault for not storing it properly. Sorry you bought one like that.
3.23 was the standard slant 6 ratio for a manual. Pretty sure my Torqueflte 65 Barracuda had that in too. Changed it for an 8-3/4 with the 10” brakes. That’s the way to go with the V8. Never came across a 3.91 Sure Grip 7-1/4. That’s a rare one for sure. Drag racing with a 7-1/4? Sure to fail 😁
The 7.25 clutch type sure grip is a very stout unit for what it is, nothing like the weak open differential version.
Hello. We are in CT. Have a 7 1/4 A body rear end with highway gears from a 1970 dart. Yours if you want it.
That’s incredibly generous of you. Thank you, but I think what I’m going to do is keep the SureGrip, but use my set of 3.23 gears. I’ll pull the axle this winter and have my axle guy in Ellington set it up for me.
