Automotive restoration, component repair and simple upgrades most hobbyists can do without spending a ton of money. I like the Plymouth/Dodge A bodies from 1960 to 1966, so that's what you'll see here, with a few other cool Mopar's thrown in for variety.
Build Update: Is this the end of Project Patina?
I was tidying up some loose ends and hoping to take it for a ride around the block, but an old nemesis reared its ugly head.

I have a 65 Barracuda, 273 Commando. Car has set for 30 plus years and trying to get it back on the road. I wish you lived close by, would give you some work! I bought a new bulkhead connector and new engine forward wiring harnness to make things easier. I have the old bulkhead in the interior of the car now with all the old wiring pushed through. No problem installing the new bulkhead and the two connectors, but totally lost what to do on the interior side of the bulkhead. Pretty sure I got myself in way over my head!
muriatic acid is instant. But you need a base to neutralize it. Like baking soda water.
Any chances of tracking down a decent ‘66 body that is maybe missing the running gear, front sheetmetal, and interior to swap everything over? I am in the southeast and cars like that come around reasonably often. Nobody wants them for restoration because of the hassle/expensive of track down all the missing pieces and nobody wants them for parts because the parts they are looking for are already gone … so, they usually (eventually) sell cheap; after the seller realizes they are not sitting on the goldmine that they thought they had!
Oh, bummer! Sorry to hear it.
@@steveandriese5619 thanks, but I’m good with it. Need a parts car, Steve? 😁
Can't beat these old school rides for basic wiring systems. You could fix/rig any problem within minutes. I rewired my 340 Duster back in the day from heads to tails, it was easy. Miss my old 69 Hemi Superbee, all original side scoop/N96 Ram Air damnit. I drove it daily 13yrs with no real issues but everything was so basic you could count the few wires they had. I certainly don't miss it's 6mpg, high octane at that, it forced me to sell her. :( My 1988 Dakota LE (loaded) sure sucks, Mopar slapped junk fusable links in it & its fsm shows the million wire "plugins" not its individual wires all color coded like old school Mopars did. They departmentalized everything on it basically so what wire does what? Hell who knows, every plug on it breaks at the touch just as you show? It sucks chasing all its crappy wiring issues down!..lol If my health was better I'd rip it all out & go old school on it, ftw! Sad seeing guys online rip out their entire Dodge truck steering columns to install GM versions because GM parts are so much easier to find. Hell Mopar abandoned it's people long ago! We're all basic folks, they forgot that..lmao Peace
Very true about the back window glass. My ‘64 project car came with the back glass missing. After a quick scan on Marketplace, I had three to choose from; two for $150.00 each and one for $100. I bought the cheapest but a week after I bought it, another one popped up for sale for $100 even closer to me, just across town (just goes to show). A good windshield with no cracks and not getting “milky” is much tougher to track down than the back glass. Nobody ever thought to save those! People do believe that those back windows are rare and, occasionally, you’ll see one listed for $1000.00 or more but nobody will pay that. You just can’t believe everything you hear on cable TV shows!
I found to heat tool as well ,while heating up underseal helps...
Thank you for the informative video. I would like to replace this seal for my 67 Barracuda Notchback as well. Since I come from Germany, sourcing replacement parts for an A-Body Mopar is very difficult. I will be back in the States in the spring and will bring the seal and the locking strip with me. Now to my question: Is this a special locking strip for Mopar seals, and does it fit in every windshield seal for a 67 Barracuda? Thank you in advance.
@@mikeross3795 the windshield lock strip should be the same for all model A Bodies. The rear window is the same. You will find different models will have separate pieces for each window, the 64-66 barracuda rear window lock strip comes as two separate pieces. Most windshield lockstrip is usually a single piece. Contact Detroit Muscle Technologies to see if they have one for your car.
What cam is that?
@@jynpeg I’m guessing it’s a 3/4 race cam! 😁
Nice job, but I was thinking you could have tied or taped a string or wire to cluster of wires for the old signal control wires so when you pull it out you have a wire or string to attach to the new cluster to pull them back down. Just saying - I know I'm being a backseat driver but it would save some effort and time.

I had to drop mine for other reasons. Not too bad, but wanted to clean it anyway. Mine has a baffle wall halfway across, so chain or nails would only get to half. I spoke with the Evapo-Rust tech line. A few tips if y’all try that: Do not leave it sit for days, tech said it starts to create a film. You have to rinse the tank afterwards, with water or fuel or whatever. Definitely filter the old evapo-rust if you want to use it again; I’m planning a separate container. Need to fill with fuel afterwards or at least something you coat the interior; tech said it’ll flash rust if you don’t. Maybe not worth the hype for this application?
LOL!!! My Holley just would not come off the idle, multiple rebuild/inspections, I put a BBs on and wha-la problem solved. I wish I knew how to fix them.
@@DavidBoyd-hi6pu sometimes the inner valve block will start to corrode internally, like all cast aluminum does, and there’s not much you can do about it. Other than that, they’re really pretty simple. I did find that even with a float helper spring, if you run out of gas, the float might get stuck, a couple of whacks with the handle of a screwdriver on the inlet fitting usually fixes it.

Pretty standard to hear 1950s-1960s music in the background at car shows. I keep a clickity clack electric pump with alligator clips on the +/- end with some rubber fuel lines on it. So long as a car has a carb on it, it'll get you home, or to the parts store.
@@TargaWheels that’s a great addition to for the “get you home” kit, like a spare ballast resistor.
For sure your adaptation is working but I question the reliability of the stacking of the lever pivot pin. If it were me, be sure that I'd used two large head screws to lock permanently the pivot pin in place. the consequence of a failure of the stacking is a breakdown where you're not the most comfortable and the risk of damaging the camshaft and the engine block.
@@jacquespoirier9071 if this was to be a long term fix, I completely agree. The obvious fix is the correct fuel pump, but this is just to get the fuel system functioning enough to run the engine longer and see if the car will move under its own power.

@@doncroitor3248 it’s an option down the road, but I’m working with what’s there for now. I’d prefer a Carter bbs over the Holley.
Nice job getting her to run! I believe you might have some carbon build up that is keeping some of the valves from sealing completely when they close. The backfire through the carb and lower compression is a symptom of that. If you can get it to idle and hold a steady high rev, you can try pouring a few shots of Sea Foam, B-12 Chem-tool, or even a little water down the throat of the carb while revving it up. The idea is any of these liquids will effectively “steam clean” the cylinders and strip any carbon away. You just need to pour it in slowly and keep the rpms up as the liquid tries to bog the engine down as you are pouring. A few (2-4) shots should do the job. Now, given the rust on top of the head around the center valves and the stuck valve, it could be rust keeping the valves from sealing on those two cylinders and you would probably need to pull the head, drop the valves, clean or replace the valves with damage on the face, inner lip, and/or stems, and pull and replace the guide if the stem shows rust damaged. You might get lucky and a simple valve lapping with compound and a suction cup might do the trick? But, for a few bucks at the parts store for the chemicals (or free to just try it with water), it’s worth a shot! The engine does sound good running over the audio! As long as the block or head hasn’t cracked and the head gasket has not blown (and the source of the chocolate motor oil), I think the engine will probable come back ok. It’s a real testament to the durability of the 225 slant six! Yeah, the 273 might be smoother, a little quicker, and sound meaner, but those slants are scrappy and lovable! I believe the Carter YF was a replacement for the Holly carb, but I am not sure if they share the same base shape or air cleaner? Worth checking into, though.
@@brianandrews7099 I agree with all of that. First I want to get it to idle smooth, then let it come to temperature and reassess. If there’s still coolant in the radiator and not in the oil, I’ll do the water/Seafoam trick.

Yeah, you are right! But unfortunately and fortunately, it took 35 years of wanting one and “life getting in the way” to finally own one! I say “unfortunately” because I kind of missed out on a lot of fun for 3 1/2 decades plus the cars were a lot cheaper in 1989! I say “fortunately” because the win is sweeter after you’ve tried and failed dozens and dozens of time and gave up and came back to try again and again, and finally scored! You only lose when you give up and quit for good!
I believe I would try to sand and grind down the high spots around the pitted areas and fill the pits themselves with body filler and/or spot putty, sand it down as level as possible and hit those outer grill areas with high build primer and more sanding until everything leveled out, then spray it chrome silver. As far as the chrome paint, it looks great against the red on the car. My inner perfectionist would not be able to cope with that pitting still being present and it would drive me crazy; but that’s just me! If you are happy, I am happy for you! Chrome plating has become nearly forbiddingly expensive … especially pot metal! I completely get trying some work arounds here! I am experiencing a case of the “bodywork blues” about halfway through my ‘64 Barracuda. Love your videos as a source of inspiration and encouragement to keep moving forward! Nice work!
@@brianandrews7099 Thank you! The “body work blues” are real and can be very discouraging. Keep pushing forward, you’ll get there! As for the pits in the grill, I was running out of time to get the car ready for Carlisle and needed them to look OK. I can always take them off and make them better following your suggestions.

Great project, I lucked out on my 66 I bought 2 years ago, barn fresh from 1997 was a 273/904 car, all original 100% rust free, paid 2k. Now has a 318 truck engine. Column shift auto, red on red. Certicard intact, and 13 perfect hubcaps.
My ‘64 came without the data tag. I was alittle concerned at first, thinking someone might have stolen it’s identity for another car, but after getting the car home and inspecting it closer, I removed the two screws that should be holding down the data tag and discovered a rust laced washer under each screw. The tag had completely rusted away, although the inner fender and front frame member remained completely solid, leaving only the part of the tag that was covered under the two screws, which somehow protected the metal! I really could care less! I see it as a blank canvas to make my car whatever I want it to be! It took me 35 years of “life getting in the way” to finally get my Barracuda! Despite the work it needs and tracking down the missing parts, I am just thrilled to finally own one after so many years of “near miss” disappointments, letting it go, finding another and that deal falling apart, too! Watch prices go up and the condition of the cars go down! Finally, the time was right and the car was there this summer! I am slowly bringing this one back! With some luck, this fish won’t ever get away!
@@brianandrews7099 I’m glad you have a solid project to mold into what you want it to be. You might get lucky and find the broadcast sheet under the rear seat bottom.
I just bought a ‘64 this summer that was mean to be the parts car for the ‘65 the seller was getting ride of. He was taken aback that I just wanted his parts car, but it was cheaper and more honest than his project car! So far, I have been doing body work and running down missing pieces. I actually did need the back glass (and no, I didn’t have to pay $5,000 for one).
I’ve also got a drip rail that was hiding rust underneath. It’s taking tons of work to remove the rust fully. Glad I’m cleaning it and found it though.
