I think this film suffered from being way overhyped as “the scariest movie ever” which is inevitably going to leave at least some segment of viewers disappointed. Then it was way over-hated by a certain segment of movie goer once it didn’t meet meteoric expectations. I liked it a lot. I would say it’s actually an excellent film even with its flaws. I’ve rarely been creeped out as much as I was during my screening of this.
i think the problem stemmed from people walking into it thinking its a horror cause thats what alot of critics called it, but its definitely a thriller not a horror
Have you ever watched The Prince of Darkness? That is the only movie that has ever scared me, I was in my teens and stopped using our downstairs bathroom because my back would be to the mirror while I pissed. I was 100% sure something was going to reach out of it and grab me.
I liked this movie but I just wanted more. Not sure what more is but when it ended I just thought “well that was fine.” Really love the hidden and not so hidden demon reveals. The marketing was so insanely good that I maybe just got my hopes up too much. I wanted it to genuinely freak me the hell out but it didn’t really do that.
i've just come to realize that all the "scariest movie ever made" marketing is all bullshit, I have yet to find a horror movie that makes me feel uneasy, apart from skinamarink, because goddamn does that movie make you uncomfortable lmao
I think the movie just should've been longer, like Silence of the Lambs longer(crazy enough people are comparing the two and I think it's not even close) but I thought it was just Good. Not bad, not Phenomenal, but just a good movie. Oh and I think the Trailer was better than the movie
It's not dumb that Lee didn't know that Longlegs was living at her mother's basement. She grew up under the influence of the doll. She regained her memories after her mom destroyed the doll. But, with time, her mother seemed to start enjoying all the killings and give herself to evil. She even tells Lee to not call her mom anymore at the end. Longlegs always wanted to be caught
They seemed to 'flip' the roles of Longlegs and Ruth Harker. At the beginning of the film, Harker appears a sad, lonely recluse and Longlegs a sadistic psychopath. At the end it's Longlegs who appears pathetic and Harker terrifying. Clever little twist.
@@GIANTCADETty I almost posted, “did you really watch the movie?” There’s a lot also about them thinking of their mum’s that is not weird at all. There’s context to it and all one need do is - use Google. Or even UA-cam. To find out.
I think another cool tidbit is when Harker is taking the ESP test, they show a picture of a rectangle and she says “mother” and then a triangle and she says “father” the rectangle relating to the boxes with the dolls the mother gives and triangle being Satan
Maybe there's an even more simple truth to it with longlegs being her dad.. no father figure to be found anywhere in the movie, the triangle solving the decryption key in a hint he gave her, him wishing her happy birthday, her childhood home being the only one he ever entered before mom took over etc etc
As soon as the title card and music hits you, you know this movie is just about to have some fun. That initial kneel from Cage is still burned into my brain. Absolutely loved this movie
20:56 It’s worth noting that the girl at the convenient store is Oz Perkins’ daughter. So she’s literally letting the director know that his creepy gross character is back again 😂
This explained the end way better than "ending explain" - as someone who loves horror and the psychology behind it, but can't WATCH horror, I appreciate this
Saw this in theaters and I remember having a moment of eureka like “oh I understand everything this plot is crazy” and then immediately forgetting it when I got home
LET ME IN NOW. AND IT CAN BE NICE. MAKE ME GO NOW. AND I'LL HAVE TO COME BACK. NOT ONCE. NOT TWICE. BUT AS MANY TIMES AS I. LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIKE
One thing you'll realize is 99% of the time something never lives up to the hype. Especially when the hype was created by the studio itself. lol Without all of that built-in hype it was a really solid modern horror film.
it’s actually better the more you watch it and see little details…i’d suggest either just a rewatch or seeing some theory videos that might open up your view of the movie and for me that made me see more stuff on my own when watching it
@@jinxysaberk it’s definitely a movie that gets better the more times you watch it and the more you can pick up on…a lot of the people upset are just mad there wasn’t more violence, and i am a little upset about that only coz they showed all the violence in the trailers so it was spoiled…they’re also mad about the ‘exposition dump’ (exposition is at the beginning to set things up so it’s not actually exposition) but I’ve seen people react to the movie on UA-cam and they were still confused after so it actually was needed for SOME viewers who aren’t as good at figuring things out on their own
Longlegs stands proudly just off of its beautiful, atmospheric cinematography. I felt the story falls through during the latter half when Cage turns himself in, it honestly kind of confused me as to why they’d remove any type of real physical danger the protagonist was in. Also hurt was the concept of “long legs” due to the iconography of Nicholas Cage, I feel like it’d add a lot more mystique if the actor for the character was unknown. Overall 8.4/10
the marketing for this movie at the start was really good until they started doing those generic horror movie ads about how scary the movie is. It's just not that kind of movie and is more suspenseful. I did think the movie was great though and everyone was really amazing in it.
Yeah, I watched it today, and it felt like a bait and switch at first I was expecting a serial killer movie with extremely upsetting kills, so the satanic angle, which I didn't know about, caught me off guard I did like how weird the movie was, and Nic Cage's performance was an obvious highlight
Nicholas cage is the bob ross of actors, the way he describes his method for the interview scene as “just adding a bit of movement” like it wasn’t one of the most original interpretations of a supernatural serial killer ive seen in years, has the same energy of when bob ross lightly dashes a canvas with a brush and says “just a happy little tree” and ends up painting the most realistic beautiful landscape ive ever seen.
I went expecting a more mysterious and “up to interpretation” movie and I think I was fairly disappointed. I wanted something like True Detective season 1 where the cosmic horror aspects could be easily chalked up to Rust’s drug-altered mind. The horror could be just humans being humans or it’s actually a cosmic demon doing us dirty. Satan being literally real killed my initial interest ngl.
I'm literally the opposite--I wish it had more supernatural elements to it. at the start Lee is able to tell which is a killer's house by "vibes" leading me to believe there'd be more of that but nope.
Name "Longlegs" comes from saying "Satan have long legs" which means he can get anywhere and get anyone, and Nicolas Cage character was only one of the many. But what really worth mentioning is first Osgood Perkins movie, "February", have pretty simular story, dark gritty tone and visuals, also feature Satan as a character, maybe more subtle (no Nicolas Cage tho) and i cant recommend it enough. I believe they couldnt use name "February" in some countries so its also known as "Blackcoat's Daughter" but most people never saw or even heard of it. And you can probably watch "February" and "Longlegs" back to back and see them as two parts of the same thing, sort of Satan's shared universe.
After my husband and I watched it, we were with it until the end where it’s basically “because magic” Super awesome visually though and awesome performances from everyone!
Him having long legs didn't need to be supernatural at all, I thought it would just be an exceptionally uncanny looking guy with weird but by no means supernatural body proportions
Some things: -It was actually Ruth, Harker's mother who delivered the parcel! It's shown while Harker is asleep. -Harker's doll obscured her knowledge of Longlegs in her mother's basement and life. It's implied from Ruth's story about how the two of them are alone that Longlegs regularly interacted with Ruth and was present for alot of Harker's life but Harker blocked him out. -Longlegs states that the day Harker decided to become a cop, "they laughed about it", implying that Longlegs regularly came upstairs and interacted with Ruth
I watched this movie about a month ago and literally the minute I finished it I thought to myself “I hope Elvis makes a video on this masterpiece” and here we are😊
About the Ramsey Case, it's widely accepted that her brother killed her and that the parents covered for him. He once hit her with a golf club hard enough to send her to the ER months earlier in a fit of jealousy, because the mom focused almost exclusively on her and her pageantry and neglected the son. She also had non-digested pineapple pieces in her stomach, the same pineapple that Burke made himself a snack of, still in a bowl on the kitchen table, meaning she died moments after when only she and him were together... BTW, the DNA on her underwear was transferred DNA and can be ignored. Unfortunately, there isn't enough evidence to prosecute Burke, but everything, while circumstantial, points to him being the culprit. And decades later, neither Burke or the dad (the mother having since died) want anything to do with the case, not at all interested in finding out who this mysterious intruder/ransomer is, and bring him or her to justice for the sake of JonBenet. That's insanely telling... I've seen parents hunting for answers their ENTIRE LIFE, wanting to find closure and justice, often going to their grave still having never known the truth and it's the saddest thing. But them? They don't care, because they KNOW everything already.
The head impact didn’t kill her, it was the garrotte strangulation, and the subsequent hiding of the body, and violation with the paint brush to make it look like a sex crime. He might have hit her, but mom killed her and made it look like a sex crime. Either the mom did it, or the entire family is complicit.
@@brensherlock "Either the mom did it, or the entire family is complicit." They are all complicit, for sure. And no, the mom didn't do it. She adored her daughter and literally lived vicariously through her. If the hit to the head hadn't killed her, she would have rushed her to the hospital. They did so when the brother hit her with a golf club the first time around. Makes absolutely no sense to be all like: "Oh well, I guess this one is done for, I decided for no good reason. I'll finish the job, no less!" And having written the ransom doesn't mean she killed her daughter, it just means she's covering up for what actually happened by giving police a false lead, and the father is well aware of this ploy as well. Also, only a kid would think smearing candies with feces is a "gotcha" moment, as well as poking her with a toy train track piece to check if she was dead. A grown adult would do these things. The parents made up a story to cover for Burke so they wouldn't lose both child. They purposely got the crime scene contaminated and disturbed by friends, constructed the ransom scenario, made a very rehearsed and misleading phone call to 911, all to make the police job's infinitely more difficult.
There's also something else that's really creepy about the band T-Rex. Their song, “Solid Gold Easy Action” features the lyrics: "Life is the same/and it always will be/Easy as picking foxes from a tree.“ Marc Bolan, the singer died in a car crash in 1977. His girlfriend had been drinking and swerved the car they were in into a tree. The license plate? FOX 661L.
I think the lyrics to “Get It On” are creepy enough on their own. I’ve been thinking a lot about how out-of-place the first verse seems compared to the rest of the song, and it’s kind of been driving me nuts that I haven’t been able to find any discussions about how weird the “you’ve got the teeth of the Hydra upon you” line is in a song from this genre and how the first verse (the one including that line) is describing a girl who’s “slim” and “weak” and seems to be the opposite of the happy-go-lucky “built like a car” girl described in all of the other verses. I just don’t find LSD to be a satisfying explanation for how it seems like that first verse was just pasted in there by a different person than the one who wrote the rest of the song.
I really loved the aesthetic and idea of this movie, but man the execution was iffy. Not only did it lack any tension, I didn't care about any of the characters, and as you pointed out, the movie is pretty much devoid of all logic.
Still maintaining my firm stand on you watching "Rings 2017" since that movie put me through a loop of disappointment and you deserve the same torment.
With regards to the Jon Benet murder I truly believe it was the younger brother. They found pineapple in her system and concluded she ate it just minutes before death. According to family friends Jon Benet and her brother often snuck downstairs late at night to have a snack and it was commonly food like pineapple. However the mother also revealed that the siblings would sometimes fight and Benet would sometimes try to steal his snack. Given the short window of time when she had the snack & died - I think she took his snack and in a rage he smashed her over the head with a bat. Coincidentally a bat was missing from the house and the family could never explain why it was missing. Police specifically found this odd since the damage to her skull behind her head matches an object like a bat. However the reason I believe it was the brother is the overwhelming evidence and bizarre coincidences surrounding the murder. For starters it would explain why the family panicked and faked that ransom letter. They didn’t want the bother going to jail for life. They just lost one child and were gonna do anything in their power to save the other one. The ransom letter never made any sense. Not only would a stranger had to of broken into the house, but he would have been hiding there for an hour plus (long enough to write that lengthy letter). But if he already killed the girl in the basement then why leave the letter? Also the ransom note had financial information only the father would know and was sloppily written. While recent hand experts have ruled out the wife, many experts disagree. And the recent expert only ruled it out because they thought it was unlikely. It wasn’t really based on solid forensic evidence. Interestingly the brother had a history of violence against the sister. Whether it was a slap or a shove. But family and friends reported his aggression was getting worse as they got older. After the murder the brother started smearing his own feces on the wall and would pee all over his room. This is actually common when a child goes through something traumatic. Finally watch the interrogation tapes of the brother. He’s gets aggressive and perks up when pineapple is mentioned. Only when they bring up the late night snack does he have a freak out. It’s so bizarre. Lastly it was revealed recently that a grand jury actually voted to indict the brother based on evidence the DA presented. However this indictment is as kept sealed and the DA decided to not pursue the brother which kept this unknown to the public for years. The father of Jon Benet was not only close with the DA/ police he personally helped fund their election. So the theory is that he got favors pulled to get them to drop the case against their son. But if you just step back and look at the entire case - the family did everything in their power to impede the investigation. They waited hours to call the police over. And the father was allowed to explore the entire house while police were gathering evidence. He then magically stumbled upon the body? All of it is odd and feels wrong.
@gavingassert9910 a theory I've heard was that the dna on the underwear could have come from the factory it was produced in if there wasn't an unidentified intruder. There's also more disturbing theories but i don't see this one come up a lot.
For anyone else interested, please check out the mini series called "The case of: JonBenét Ramsey". They invite the worlds best forensic professionals and scientists to reopen the case and reevaluate evidence with newer technologies. The series runs for about 4-5 hours and is incredibly captivating. Everything in OP's comment is covered, and more.
I never thought anyone else could pull off what "The Blair Witch Project" did back in the day with its marketing, even though it isn't exactly the same, since nowadays everyone knows it's a movie with Nic Cage in it, it sort of captures the spirit of it in a way, almost like a call back to those early internet days.
I wonder if the Satan of this movie isn’t Lucifer/the Devil but the ancient Canaanite deity, Moloch god of Human Sacrifice (specifically child sacrifice). “You must not give any of your children to be sacrificed to Molech, for you must not profane the name of your God. I am the lord” - Leviticus 18:21 “I will set my face against that man and I will cut him off from his people; for by giving his children to Molech, he has defiled my sanctuary and profaned my holy name” - Leviticus 20:3 The word Satan in Hebrew meant accuser or adversary. Moloch or Molech is usually depicted as having the head of a bull.
nah, another part why it is scary is because the demon was just doing this out of kicks, not for some ritualistic need such as sacrifice. It is just purely malice, irrational and radical malice for the sake of malice.
This is one of the very few movies I’ve ever experienced where the insane amount of amazing marketing & universal hype for the film caused it to completely fall flat imo. It’s not a bad movie by any means but almost nothing happens the entire film and the ending was just strange and out of nowhere. Really didn’t live up to the hype in any way shape or form imo which is a shame cause I was very excited to watch it after everything I’d heard.
This is because the studio likely realized this movie was an utter wreck. It is, by all means, a terrible movie. By hyping the movie the way they did, audiences' psychology was heavily baited to go see this movie despite any initial reactions to the actual quality of the movie. When an actor or movie is hyped like this, people will bite on it. Tickets will get sold no matter how crappy the movie actually is.
i actually really loved the movie. i was entertained the whole time and it made me feel like i was watching an old horror movie for the 1st time again. not everyone liked it, but i really did
I don’t get why more people aren’t considering that daddy longlegs is harker’s father. When longlegs first came to their house, he tied up the mom but didn’t kill anyone. That was longlegs finally finding his wife that had run away from him with his daughter..
@@RenandSkimpy-v5o I don't get why they made him look like an ugly woman, was it a Baphomet thing, a transgender pride LGPT whatever thing... or all they all one in the same?
Ok sure but in that case why does the mother not recognize him when she first confronts him outside their house? Right after Lee took a picture of him?

Omg thanks a lot Elvis this is awesome ur my favorite utouber right now Please react to evil dead movies they're absolutely nuts and make a fun video to watch
This movie introduced the world to “longlegging” a film. A vitriolic fueled marketing campaign aimed at convincing us it’s the greatest film ever made. Not the case
I absolutely loved this movie. With horror being my favorite genre, I understand why horror fans were a bit disappointed in it. All in all, the atmosphere was great, the world-building was great, the acting was great, it had a good pacing, and it has a kind of "cult film" feel to it. I think it's a great movie, and nobody can convince me otherwise.
I’m honestly so sad that the marketing for the film was as effective as it was, because a ton of people who normally do not like this kind of weirdo little movie all saw it and do nothing but talk shit about it. Personally Longlegs is a new top 5 film for me and I’ve watched it about 6 times now, it’s very dear and special to me. Part of me hopes there’s a big enough demand for a Longlegs prequel following Longlegs himself before he went completely off the deep end (ala Ti West’s ‘Pearl’). I mean going to the UA-cam upload of ‘Fire Fire Fire, Hiss’, the last recording of Longlegs before he went fully insane, majority of the comments are people begging for a prequel. I love Longlegs so much and I’m so anxious to see if there will ever be any more content relating to it.
Don't try and wash away every criticism of this movie as being from people who aren't into eccentric horror movies, because that's laughably false. Eccentric horror movies are my favourite genre of movie, this movie bored me to death. The plot went nowhere, they had their foot half in the door with both the supernatural and detective elements and didn't go anywhere with either. A lot of people just didn't like the movie, for a lot of very valid reasons.
@@asdasdae I mean the plot makes sense to me, it took a second watch but I was intrigued enough by the film to go back in. I think this genuinely is a case of “you just don’t get it” because most people want straight forward spoon fed stories and don’t wanna do any extra heavy lifting, thus they won’t watch the film again and pick up on things they missed the first time. Sure I’m biased and kind of snooty about this sort of thing but what else am I supposed to think when majority of people’s criticisms are things that are addressed by the film itself and make sense if you watch the film on its own terms.
The plot isn't the issue. It's the pacing and mostly the conclusion of the movie that people had issues with. I liked the whole movie up till Part 3. It was just terrible, it was like it didn't want to continue the whole detective thing the beginning had and just went full supernatural with the ending. The main characters actions at the end of the movie felt stupid and irritated me to no end making it far worse @@madeofmeats
@@djr4245 the movie from the beginning is a supernatural movie though, it all builds up to the ending and makes sense once you recontextualize the film with everything we learn throughout. It was never meant to be a down to earth procedural cop film, it was always about Satan and the occult.
yeah it took me out of the film a bit i was like.... really? they couldn't have executed this part a bit better? it felt like they ran out of time to brainstorm an interesting way to communicate that exposition to the audience. they looked at the material and said "yeah fuck it let's just directly talk through what's been going on"
It took me a few word combinations to finally find "10 yr old Zoë SLAYS "The Heretic Anthem" by Slipknot" on youtube. Thanks. I did not pick up that protagonist may have been antichrist. Also thanks.
You're right about adding leg extensions: having an unknown killer who leaves no clues and communicates in cryptograms signed Longlegs and who actually has extremely long legs is hilarious. Also I think they blew it using the 14th instead of the 11th.
Before the movie revealed his face I was creeped out, but for some reason I can't take Nick seriously and his performance felt a little goofy for me towards the end
I saw this with my cousin at the cinema and Jesus I never seen her jumped so much in her seat! This was Nicholas Cage at his most incredible sinister role 🤯🤯🤯
You should watch The Blackcoat’s Daughter, also directed by Osgood Perkins. I believe it’s meant to be in the same universe cuz it also has the same design for the devil.
It doesn’t have the same design. I had to look it up myself because it’s been many years since I watched it, but the devil in _The Blackcoat’s Daughter_ had short horns sticking straight up, and it kind of looks like a giant moth to me, whereas the Devil in _Longlegs_ has long, curly horns twisting down toward its sides and big goat ears sticking out, looking more like something from _Chilling Adventures of Sabrina._
I love both Nicholas cage movies and T. rex when I saw this movie was coming out and I heard T. rex was a part of it I had to see it lol i love this movie.
For me it's Sylvia Likens. That case shook me to my core and changed me. There were two movies but they are not anywhere close to as terrifying as the true story.
I went into this movie completely blind, and for most of the movie assumed Harker was just autistic and smart, picking up on vibes, and there was a severely mentally ill individual behind the murder… I think you can imagine my utter confusion in the last 15 mins of the movie 😹 “wait, this is a supernatural movie???!”. I’m such a dumbass
Not really into horror or the type of movies you review in general, but I love your video style and comedy so much, I watch all your videos on repeat. Keep up the good work
First half of this movie was pretty phenominal, second half was pretty good, last 15 minutes were laughably bad. I laughed out loud when the doll is shot and horribly cg'd black smoke came out of the doll and her head, then she passes out, and a 5 minute exposition voiceover started. It was SOOOO good up until that point. Just what a bomb on what could have been a 10 out of 10 movie if the last 15 minutes had gone differently.
the exposition voiceover was THE WORST. i was super hooked at the beginning but the more that got revealed the more it started to lose me, and that part immediately took me the rest of the way out of the film

Yeah, I watched it today, and it felt like a bait and switch at first
I was expecting a serial killer movie with extremely upsetting kills, so the satanic angle, which I didn't know about, caught me off guard
I did like how weird the movie was, and Nic Cage's performance was an obvious highlight
@@frankdrebinnfantastic rebuttal, I loved all the points you made
I'm literally the opposite--I wish it had more supernatural elements to it. at the start Lee is able to tell which is a killer's house by "vibes" leading me to believe there'd be more of that but nope.
@@luminescentcoreYeah I really wish they did more with the psychic aspect of things. Felt wasted.
Real, should’ve played it more low key and left it up to being possibly real
Yeah exactly this. The more supernatural it got the worse it got
And Kiernan Shipka is in both!
Perkins best movie by a mile. As atmospheric as Longlegs plus a coherent plot
I fully agree with you
Maika Monroe was so good I’m instantly a huge fan I hope she gets the very biggest and best roles in future 🍿
Some things:
-It was actually Ruth, Harker's mother who delivered the parcel!
Nah, I firmly believe it was the mom. She wrote the letter.
The head impact didn’t kill her, it was the garrotte strangulation, and the subsequent hiding of the body, and violation with the paint brush to make it look like a sex crime. He might have hit her, but mom killed her and made it look like a sex crime. Either the mom did it, or the entire family is complicit.
If it were one of my kids there would be a primal Intinct.... what is 17 more years
@@brensherlock "Either the mom did it, or the entire family is complicit." They are all complicit, for sure.
@@xen0biano, it's not "widely " accepted.
There's also something else that's really creepy about the band T-Rex. Their song, “Solid Gold Easy Action” features the lyrics: "Life is the same/and it always will be/Easy as picking foxes from a tree.“
Marc Bolan, the singer died in a car crash in 1977.
"Has some supernatural elements" is crazy thing to say about this movie. Same as if you were talking about the show Supernatural.
One could say... a Ring of Disappointment
7:15 I actually made a joke to my friend in the theatre about that, I said "This is just Nic Cage acting normally"
All of it is odd and feels wrong.
what about the dna evidence on her that didn’t belong to her brother or dad
@gavingassert9910 a theory I've heard was that the dna on the underwear could have come from the factory it was produced in if there wasn't an unidentified intruder. There's also more disturbing theories but i don't see this one come up a lot.
For anyone else interested, please check out the mini series called "The case of: JonBenét Ramsey". They invite the worlds best forensic professionals and scientists to reopen the case and reevaluate evidence with newer technologies. The series runs for about 4-5 hours and is incredibly captivating. Everything in OP's comment is covered, and more.
I'll never not believe this theory.
I’ve always believed it was the brother too.. it’s the only thing that makes sense.. I feel for her parents.

I am the lord” - Leviticus 18:21
“I will set my face against that man and I will cut him off from his people; for by giving his children to Molech, he has defiled my sanctuary and profaned my holy name” - Leviticus 20:3
The word Satan in Hebrew meant accuser or adversary.
Moloch or Molech is usually depicted as having the head of a bull.
I actually identify it as Baphomet based off the silhouette
nah, another part why it is scary is because the demon was just doing this out of kicks, not for some ritualistic need such as sacrifice.
Watching it with subtitles at the scene with the metal ball is pretty cool, it describes the high pitched noise as "almost a voice"

I was waiting for this for so long and as per usual you did not disappoint.
If he made this a few months ago he would have made big views
Been looking forward to this video for a long time. Normally the production value you put into these videos are pretty good, but dude, the effort that went into this one - especially the intro covering the JonBenét Ramsey - really hooked me in. Always appreciate the content Elvis!
