Plus it's also pretty sad when you realize Red is a former alcoholic (he refused a beer from his coworker at the start of the movie) and he has broken down and turned back to one of his old vices.
The thing I love most about Nic Cage is that he doesnt give a crap about the rep a movie character will give him. He just makes his money and keeps it moving. Its kinda smart though because you cant really attach just one character to him (eg: Robert Pattinson is a great actor but in the back of our mind, we will always see him as Edward)
The woman who plays Mandy....SO perfect. Haunting, distant, she almost seems like a ghost from the beginning. The whole thing is...very, very Metal. Also, the bad guys are clearly GWAR, and the jar is LSD Mayonnaise.
I think the crossbow being named “the Reaper” might be a subtle reference to the Blue Öyster Cult song (Don’t Fear) the Reaper. It’s a metal song (sorta), with some horror elements. It’s first pop culture appearance was in the 1978 horror film Halloween. It was in the 1978 horror epic, the Stand (appearing nearly 20 years later in the ABC miniseries adaptation). It was even referenced in the 1992 rock n roll comedy, Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey. But hey! That’s just a theory! A Film Theory! And.... cut!

It's really hard to encapsulate how much of the 80's this movie captures. The overall fantasy themes of it, Reagan being on the radio to signify when the film is taking place, the Sabbath shirts and desolate setting in the woods, etc. Overall it really just plays on how the counter culture was. The War on Drugs and the Satanic Panic - this is all of that thrown into a Dungeons and Dragons campaign. If you remember that time period the movie hits some major nostalgia points in your mind. People in the metal music scene, and the next generation of hippies/druggies were wild. There was a real infatuation with Satan and chemists making some seriously intense hallucinogenics as sort of a push back to what the mainstream was doing. Mandy and Red feel like they kind of toed the fringe of that counter culture and were happy for it, without realizing how dark it can get.

This is one of Nic Cage's BEST movies! And a great movie in itself! To go from this jaded lumberjack happy to get home to his deep artistic girl Mandy, and then the Cult Freaks arrive. And Nic's painful witness and mad vengeance thereafter. Nicely done! I don't get the parts where Nic shows up to get his crossbow, or the dude with the tiger that sympathizes with Nic. But the movie is so 'out there' it all kinda fits in the scheme of things for Nic's character. Like he's been through something like it before with some bad asses up in his grill - but this time they took his GIRL!!! Great creepy movie DRENCHED in atmosphere!
24:00 why does this remind me of the scene from American Dad where Francine tells Stan she's pregnant, then Stan breaks a bottle and is about to stab her, but walks off, grabs a chainsaw, but changes his mind, walks off, grabs a cheetah, changes his mind, walks off, and grabs a cheetah holding a chainsaw lol

For the last scene with Red and Jeremiah, if you look at it from Jeremiah's perspective, it would make sense why Red's voice was demonic. Jeremiah sees himself as godly/divine, so Red being his enemy, he would naturally see Red as a demon. The director's other movie was apparently in part a commentary on how the exploratory spirituality of the hippies went astray. I kind of see something similar in 'Mandy'. Destructive cults, bikers, and drugs were all part of that movement. Jeremiah is pretty clearly inspired by Charles Manson, who was a failed musician as well. On a more symbolic level, I wonder if there's supposed to be an allusion to Gnosticism here? There's a recurring motif in Gnostic creation accounts in which the Demiurge and its servants set out to capture Sophia, only for her to outwit them and escape. Mandy doesn't escape, but she does reject Jeremiah and his claims. I'm almost certain there's also a version of the story where the Demiurge declares itself "God" after seeing its own reflection, matching the scene where Jeremiah talks to himself in the mirror and ostensibly receives a message from God. There are versions where Sophia has a male counterparts who descends to Earth to look for her. While Mandy dies early on, she still shows up in the animated segments and is with Red in the car at the end. Jeremiah and Red both take at least some of the LSD, and "The Chemist" who makes the LSD is also the one who tells Red which way to go. In a loose sense, both are guided by the same thing. This kind of fits with Red's line at the end about how "the psychotic drowns where the mystic swims".
