Thanks for the superb demo, Jay! It's nice to hear how versatile the Cali76 Stacked Edition is with all of the various styles you play. I especially love the setting with the compressor followed by the limiter...
I think you just sold me on yet another pedal. You are directly responsible for... more pedal purchases than I care to admit publicly. Another great video - thanks for your devotion to the heart and soul of music, and for your positive energy!
I usually don't watch compressor pedal videos. But your playing is so energetic and entertaining, I just had to watch. And it really opened up my ears to a different outlook on compressors. I like this pedal. Great video.
Purchased this yesterday recorded some songs with it and the difference is like night and day! If you want your music in ITunes Spotify etc this will save you lots of time around every aspect in mixing and mastering I absolutely love this pedal it will never leave my board!
So thats what Ratatat would sound like if they were covering Daft Punk... I really love your playing and you have a great taste in guitars, have a nice day
I just got one of these last week. It's the best compressor I've ever owned. Excellent demo and fantastic playing! Thanks! Makes me feel even more confident in my purchase!
Stacked all the way. I use two seperate comps to achieve the slow smoother into peak limiter effect as you showed, and it would be super cool to have the stacked and do it in one box. Alas, not in my budget atm. Thanks for all you do
The Cali76 stacked addition, according to the the CEO of Origin Effects was inspired by Lowell George of Little Feat. Lowell stacked 2 76 compressors in parallel early in the 70s to give his slide guitar clean, almost infinite sustain. I bought one as I began learning and playing slide a few years ago. It works as advertised. Great pedal.
Friend what a great demo and explanation. Such a high end video presentation. Well done. I would like to have both the Slide RIG and the Stacked edition. For now the Stacked edition is on my radar.
I bought one after have seen this so awesome video and I am very happy of the result, my triangle big muff pi is so clear and pure when Cali76 stacked edition is ON . My tube amp is ...so alive and all the chain sound better (delay and reverb) with really no awful noisy sound (no need to use in this case my good decimator noise gate ...so it is pure quality!! ). Thank you for this video and the other ones (JHS week is so good) !
Awesome to know! Looking forward trying it. I sold my nano big muff and I’ve been wanting to purchase the new Ram’s Head version. I just bought a Gracetone FF01 germanium fuzz face after seeing Chris Buck use it who also uses the Cali76 and I’m really looking forward to using them together. It really seemed to add something to his drives/fuzz tones as well as yours Jay! Thinking of adding a Strymon Riverside to the chain as well. Hey Jay , I would love to see you demo the Hudson Broadcast pre-amp. I own the dual version and it’s a great pedal. I always walk away from your videos with new ways to use a pedal and I would love to see what you could pull out of it.
Great playing! ...as always. I picked up a compressor a while ago, took it out when I started using a Fuzz (1st pedal). Your playing and excellent breakdown, makes me want to give it another go. I grew up in NYC in the time of Marshall’s...but I am more of gritty, fuzzy, and yes, clean kind of guy! Edge of breakup. It is amazing how much extra punch you get from a compressor. This one looks like a great one!
Jay: I was bummed that the compressor I really want is out of production...and then I found this demo. This might be the compressor of my dreams. Now I have to get one and try it. Terrific demo...and by the way, nice playing!
Superb playing, before anything else. Regarding the pedal, it's a nice demo but, as someone who is trying to get started into compressors, understand how they work and, more important, HEAR them working, I really missed the 'compressor off vs. compressor on' for each one of the examples.
Hi Ryan, I have bought one even if the price was first so horrific. I had before a poor moer compressor and there is a world between them. I wanted to play things like sultans of swing, and now the work of learning a song worth the fact of buying it. The second compressor is absolutly awesome. At this moment, I think the pedal deserve every € you put inside. For information, My pedal got a serial number on the face, so pretty, but it means that it is maybe a limited edition?
Such amazing playing dude. I play a Start (Paulownia) through a Tone King Imperial mkii and want something to smooth out the shrill spikes so started looking at Compressors. Think this stacked pedal sounds amazing and can also give me Gilmour Sustained Clean Overdrive/Sustain type tones. Have you played it through your Imperial?
My compressor journey lasted a little over 12 years, and I tried/owned a bazillion of them in the process. The Cali76 big box as well as the Compact Deluxe just weren't for me. Felt sterile and behaved more like a limiter than I had hoped. The EMMA Transmorgrifier was my long-standing compressor to beat; I love it's action. It can go from subtle smoothing to beautiful musical sustain into feedback. My issues with it were that it has an innate EQ curve that rolls off a touch of bass and adds some upper midrange, plus it isn't true bypass and it would pick up radio signals at random times. Again, after trying dozens of "the best" compressors, I've settled on the Boss CS-2 and have been using it as an always-on subtle compressor (attack at maximum time to stay out of the way of the transients) since late 2017. I consider the Nobels CO-2 and Ibanez CP-10 to both be fantastic compressors as well, they both just roll off the top end a touch. Anyway, The Origin comps are beautifully built, but they are not objectively "better" than the rest, just a particular sound and feel that may or may not be your cup of tea. Depends on your rig, your applications, and what you're listening for...
Sounds great! One problem I just got a regular one in the mail. Sounds so much better than any other compressor. The rich bass is still there. These compressors are worth the money. It’s a lot but you’re never going to get what you want out of the cheaper ones. Save the money trying cheap ones and get the only compressor you’ll ever need. Sage-ish advice from someone whose wasted too much on the cheaper and even mid/high priced well regarded brands.
Hello Jay Leonard J, First of all I want to congratulate you for the quality of your reviews and your excellent guitar playing. I hesitate between 2 models of Cali76, namely the Compact Deluxe and the Stacked Edition, so I would like to know which of the two you prefer, as well as the strong and weak points of each of them. Thank you in advance for your answer.
Nice demo I’m definitely ordering one today your videos are awesome can you please tell your signal flow do you do any EQ after i think is good for us the listeners to know please thanks 🙏🏽 for the great video
I do roll off a little low end (below 100Hz) in the EQ when editing my guitar. The guitar doesn't really produce much sound under 80Hz, so it just gets rid of some of the unrelated muck. I also occasionally add a Hi Shelf cut around 6K depending on what I am demoing for similar reasons :)
I think I would prefer the slide rig over this as you don't have the same mixer level control over the independent compressor signals with this stacked edition; you are just have a blend knob. And still no threshold, ratio controls so those are still fixed. The slide rig just seems more dialed in for guitar with a limiter/compressor set-up. Don't see the need for S/F unless you are doing vocals.
Thanks for writing! The SlideRig is indeed awesome. However, keep in mind that the "In" and the Gold "Thru" knobs actually serve the same function as a Threshold knob: just like the original 1176 compressors :)
@@JayLeonardJ First... great vid! :) 2nd... Origin Effects says I can get the same sounds as the SlideRig V2 with the Stacked Edition. So I'm puzzled as to the diff. Is the only diff that you can control the overall (2 compressor) level with one knob on the SlideRIG which you need to do with two knows on the Stacked?
Is this just the Compact Deluxe MK2 on one side and the SlideRIG on the other? If so, doesn't it kind of render the Compact Deluxe and SlideRIG pointless with this out now? I know you're losing some controls to compromise for having both in a small pedal but from listening to these demos, I don't think those extra controls are THAT lost from combining both Origin Effect compressors, right? Is there a big trade off from the Compact Deluxe? I was just about to pull a trigger on the Compact Deluxe MK2, but after this came out, now my search just extended...now I am not sure if I want this or the compact...which one to get?!
Late for the party, but I hear ya, I was in the same boat as an acoustic, electric and slide player. I couldn't afford both so I pulled the trigger on this one. It looks like they both have their slight advantages so you might have to give up some to get more in the long run. It comes down to... do you need separate attack and release on only one comp or will the combo A & R control work well with two? Mines still on order lol.
Hum. Trying pay off something. In the meantime I'll have to try playing around with what I have to get something closer to Amazing Cali1186 Stacked! And that was Amazing Amazing Playing!
Does this have a fixed compression ratio? The standard Cali76 Compact Deluxe is definitely on my wish list -- I'd probably just run that into another existing compressor pedal if I really needed dual-compression. I love the fine tuning available on the Cali76 CD, and my feeling is that you lose some of that with the Stacked Edition.
Hey Jay, have you tried Thorpy FX Fat General Compressor and Cornish OC-1? If so, which one would you get if you were looking for an absolute transparent compressor? Thanks for this demo, superb playing as always man
prob a bit late (lol) but both you mentioned are very transparent. the origin effects does colour tone slightly but in a good way. the other two are better for absolute transparency
Jay this demo was among the best I've seen. Entertaining, informative, and you're a crazy good player. I hope Origin is hooking you up with a pedal for a future demo, or at least a commission because I'm 100% buying one of the Cali compressors. I'm having a hard time deciding which version at the moment because there are so many options. Loved the Cory Wong cover and the sound you're getting in this video, but I'm also thinking about using the compressor as a piece of outboard gear for my projects. Think that is wise? Which version would you go with?
FANTASTIC demo, thanks much! I had the original, big SlideRig which I loved, but it was just too big and noisy for my primarily acoustic use. Seeing this item 2 years after it came out (kinda slow, I am), I was wondering if it could replace the original. Looks like it can! Gotta save the pennies and go for it..... Your demo is very entertaining, your playing excellent, I am subscribing!
I use the Deluxe as my swiss army knife and the Stacked for very compressed character tones. The Deluxe can be more transparent and the Stacked can be more sustain-y. Can't go wrong with either:)

Hey Origin: What is the fixed compression ratio on each side of this pedal? I'm assuming relatively low since they'll sum when using both sides?
@@gcoller Hey! Yeah it's low at 4:1
@@OriginEffectsUK Makes sense. Thanks, I have one arriving today!
Origin Effects I’m trying to nail Lowell George tone..I got the stacked but do you think the slide rig would be better??
