The entire Dil Se soundtrack is a masterpiece and represents some of Rahman’s finest work and Indian film music as a whole. Highly recommend checking it out.
The original was sung by the Nightingale of India.... If Indian media was as spread as Western media or had the influence like it has today she would have been by far the most popular and highest amount of record selling artist of the planet. She was the great Late Lata Mangeshkar.
It's such a shame that Rahman is mostly known globally for a track like Jai ho. Us indian fans don't care about it at all. Somehow that had an earbug effect worldwide I suppose
He did and he will probably get few more, but Jai Ho is not his best composition... highly complex mind you but he has just done so many more; that Jai Ho seemed like "okay nice" to us. Rahman is a genius and this concert in his presence is fabulous. Why not try his Bombay Theme, only music or Taal se Taal, my favorite . If you don't know this composer, consider listen to him extensively. His music is magical.
Thanks, I'll put those on my list of things to look up. I'd personally suggest to anyone who likes this that they also investigate Louiz Banks (who is Indian though his name isn't). His album 'Gangashakti' for a start.
Wow, I know nothing about the technicalities of music, but this is one of the best and most detailed reactions I have ever seen on UA-cam! Since you mentioned you have not heard the original (which is worth a listen even after reacting to this version), I would just like to point out that the lead singer here has a very strong Bengali (eastern Indian) feel to her voice and Hindi accent (and she sings fabulously), but it really clashes with the south Indian feel of the song.
It was actually pretty true to the original! Masterful! People have to listen to the original soundtrack arrangements if they don't know this banger! AR Rahman is a god. He's done so many legendary soundtracks... the only parallel in the US film market would be someone like Hans Zimmer or John Williams.
Really amazing that you react to this music. Thank you so much for that. Just to mention this: The bass player, Achal Murthy, an Indian guy living in Luxembourg is the bass player of my son’s alternative metal trio “Atomic Rocket Seeders”. The band is: Berklee bassman Achal Murthy, the incredible drummer Luca Daresta, an my son TAP (Thierry A. Porcedda) guitar and vocals. A live recording: ua-cam.com/video/gpvJx3ChJs0/v-deo.html
1. A. R. Rahman, "Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera" (Swades): Berklee Indian Ensemble and Berklee World Strings and 2. Berklee Indian Ensemble ft. Armeen Musa - Jaago Piya from this same Berklee College. There are some more, but, these have waited 10 years.
Ar Rahman is considered as the god of music in India..his music literally teleports the listener to a higher dimension. He revolutionized indian music to a new era
Sir, it seems to me like this is one of your first experiences with Indian music. This particular song is what AR Rahman is all about. This presentation of the original composition is fantastic. But if you ever find time, do listen to the original one, the baseline on that is one of the best ever recorded. The dynamic range of the track is vast, each instrument comes and shines. The singer Late Lata Mangeshkar (Legendary Singer) was the quintessential voice of the independent India. This track was never recognized for it's beauty in totality, majorly because of the lack of good audio systems had not reached every Indian home. But today, when I listen to it; it's one of the best mastered audio. The sound engineering is right up there with one of the best ever. The whole album "Dil Se" was a smashing hit; movie not so much. Do yourself a favor and listen to "Satrangi Re" from the same album, it will blow you away. If you're into music that technically is borderline insanely good; that track is one to start with. Every possible note in and above scale has been used and it works.

The lyrics are supposed to be a bride talking about her wedding night to a girl friend of hers. The singer Lata (RIP) famously disliked """dirty"""" songs so the lyrics are very poetic and try to evocate sensuality while being very nebulous and romantic. Helps that Gulzar the lyricist is probably the finest poet of our time here in India. Gulzar + AR Rehman have produced some of the biggest, most iconic, most influential bits of music in modern Indian pop culture.
Another AR Rahman song “Chayya chayya” from the same “Dil Se” movie soundtrack was also used by Spike Lee for the film inside man starring Denzel Washington. Check out the videos of the original songs.. they’re pretty cool too
Some of us who came to the west as teenagers have enjoyed fusion music ! We feel comfortable with classical Indian music and understand the lyrics and at the same time enjoy pop charts etc.
Great, please listen to more songs form India. I would like to recommend 'Ilaiyaraaja' he is a legendary Indian composer known for blending traditional Indian music with modern and Western styles and he's always called as maestro as he's the first asian to compose a symphony, you should listen to his songs from movie 'nee thane en ponvasantham' and his oratario 'Thiruvasagam in Symphony ' which was the first indian oratario and 'I met bach' from 'how to name it' which is composed for an imaginary situation where Bach meets an Indian saint Thyagaraja
It is really hard to cap the original of this song. Incredible composition, music, singers... but this one manages to become my favourite live version of it. At least until AR Rahman pulls another wild rabbit out of his huge hat... You never know with that guy...
Hi, Doug. I've been waiting for the right time to make a suggestion and this is it. You must listen to Maria Kalaneimi's "Ahma". She, along with band members fron the Finnish Institute of Folk Music whip up extrordinary compositions. Ms. Kalaniemi plays the 5-row button accordion, which, if you are not familiar with it, is a mighty, redoubtable instrument by itself; ably supported by the rest of the band the music is alternately, cooly melodic then becomes wildly chaotic before resolving into a satisfying conclusion. It's almost exhausting. The whole album is amazing. Do yourself a favor! Hope you can get to this gem.
I think if you say double harmonic major one more time Fariya Faraji will come at you with a pitchfork. This song is most likely in sindhu bhairavi raga (I'm no expert).

How well put arya👏
I enjoyed the seamless flow from Eastern to Western styles. Superb musicianship all around!
Basic is indian classical though
That is FANTASTIC! Several years back, I saw Anoushka Shankar in concert and it was very similar, very Fusion mostly Indian and Jazz!
Didn't AR Rahman also win an Oscar for Jai Ho? (Slumdog Millionaire)
Yes, 2 Oscars for this movie.
Slumdog mil is just 30% of Rahman's potential
It's such a shame that Rahman is mostly known globally for a track like Jai ho. Us indian fans don't care about it at all. Somehow that had an earbug effect worldwide I suppose
