PLEASE do a video on Gaia online. Might be a little unknown to some but all of my preteen life was on that website. role-playing cringey anime OCS in the forums, people prepositioning each other in the MMO style towns and rallies, all of the terrible movie promotional merch they did, the MTV celebrity inserts, premium currency scams and loopholes, the theaters, and last but probably most famous of all the stunning crash of the Gaia economy.
I remember one of the last times I was on Club Penguin and went to the pizza parlor, I witnessed two penguins on a “date” when the guy’s “wife” barged in and we witnessed a penguin divorce. Perfection.
i remember desperately trying to date people in the pizzeria and being so utterly distraught with the fact that 4 people broke up with me within 3 minutes that i sobbed and wrote a rap about it
im so sorry to say this but i checked and i don’t have the diary anymore// i wrote the rap in because i was scared of my mum finding my self insert club penguin character ship art i am so terribly sorry everyone 😭
club penguin is so nostalgic for me, i know this sounds very "and everyone clapped", but someone talked about club penguin shutting down in class and half the class was legitimately distraught.
I remember playing it for hours in our family computer but when I heared it was going to shut down I didn't even get a chance to play for one last time 😭😭 how I wish to go back in time to be a kid again and play club penguin
I remember the “pookie” adoption thing always being super violent. When they first entered the pet shop, a lot of pookies would do something like *gets thrown into the shop from a moving car, rolls down the steps* and stuff like that. If you had a tragic backstory, like being kept in a cage and starved and everything, more people would be “sympathetic “ and adopt you, apparently
Still scarred by my first experience of classism when my club penguin boyfriend left me for another penguin because she was member and was totally dripped out 😕
I remember I was "dating" everybody on my friends list and they'd frequently walk in on me in my igloo with my penguin side hoes. I would watch them fight and then they'd leave me and I'd go straight back to the pizza parlour to put some new penguins in the rotation 😭
YES I DID THIS TOO. i would pick up penguins at the pizza parlour and id invite them to my igloo and I'd invite one of the penguins I was already dating to my igloo just so they would see eachother just so there would be chaos like i liked watching the arguments between my two side hoes. i was like, 8. or 9.
GAGAGAGAGA I just disliked my own face because I am unpretty. HOWEVER: I always like my GOOD videos however. No dislikes allowed where I come from. Don't be mean, dear a
it is so hilarious and genuinely tracks with my experience with the sheer drama of World of Warcraft private servers. like people will come into power in the most niche ways online and unlease full mania immediately
I used to adopt so many puffles you couldn't see the floor to my igloo and since afaik there was no way to just shuffle through each puffles (you had to individually click them, and they kept moving so I couldn't click them all) a lot of my puffles went neglected. I used to get legitimately upset I got the puffles running away notes and one time I was so distressed that I emailed club penguin support and asked if they were ok on my school email address. They replied saying something like yes they're fine but they always signed off the email with a question. I remember it was like "why do you think the sky is orange? (it was the lead up to some dojo event) and my stupid kid brain was like omg they wanna hear my opinions!! So I replied with my theory, and a different employee answered and signed off with another question (they were definitely required to do it) and I thought they wanted to be my friend and started just casually talking to them. Anyways shout out to the club penguin support employees who I traumadumped on about how I got bullied at school or something when I was 8. Came for club penguin, stayed for the support
God I remember taking the club penguin 'secret agent' thing VERY seriously hahaha. I was so dedicated to solving all of the missions and yes the jet pack and mine cart games were supreme. I miss this game so much. Good times.
Genuinely!! In my little head I was Gary's best agent haha. I remember the survival mission was my favourite; I felt like such a boss being able to keep myself awake with those supplies.
Club Penguin rewritten exists they used to be better then the og but something happened and everything got lost so they had to start over but it’s getting there
That was late club penguin, alotta the original members were growing up by then so a lot of us don’t remember it as fondly. I stopped playing right around the secret agent stuff
I went to an arts high school for creative writing. When Club Penguin shut down, a friend of mine wrote a eulogy for his puffle for that week's writing assignment. Just thought I'd share that :)
I remember emailing a staff member as a kid saying I had a dream that puffles got clothing items and that they should implement that into the game. I wonder if that staff member thought it was cute/endearing or if they were concerned that a child had their own email.
I emailed the club penguin staff all the time and eventually asked them if i could interview them about their job for a class assignment. The Club Penguin staff were actually some of the best people ever. I was a weird kid...
OMG Okay, I sent A LOT of those emails. I used to asked them if the leaks of parties were real or what, then it was more like “I heard a rumor of a Golden puffle, is it real?”. Theeen, was more like “okay, hear me, all the community KNOWS about the rainbow puffle, JUST TELL US” and things related with anything about the puffles (yeaaars later they became true!), the ninja thing (the ice version), the white color, Herbert, the real director of that agency; even at maybe 2010/2011 I used to give them ideas for parties like dinosaurs or the end of the world for 2012. IM NOT LYING saying I used to fight for a day every year when everyone could have the “membership” (when I already had the membership until the last day, like Marx would be so proud). When I was older enough to understand more things, once I wrote them asking for a job opportunity for my sister or to me giving them ideas 😭😭😭 I still thinking some of those ideas or things I asked were in fact considered to be real. Don’t know. But they always were so kind with every answer 💖 miss the innocence and simple years
@@unibunnii5520 yup. I don't remember much of what i asked, but i do remember i asked something about their salary, and they said that they couldn't tell me, but i could tell the class they got paid with club penguin coins.
Fun story, during the peak of covid 19 my girlfriend at the time and I couldn't get together to celebrate our one year anniversary (she was high risk) so our anniversary date was on club penguin rewritten at the pizza cafe, it ended with us both being banned for life and laughing our asses off together on the phone
back when i believed i was bi (am now a lesbian), i did the same thing with my (now ex) boyfriend-- it wasn't our anniversary, but we went on penguin pizza dates and also went on dates in animal crossing new horizons. it was nice. :']
Back in like 2007 a lot of brazilian players would go to some place in Club Penguin, changing the penguin's color to one of the brazilian flag's colors (blue, green and yellow), sit down there and try to form the Brazilian flag with the penguins. Then we'd start saying "WE WANT A BRAZILIAN SERVER" (because back then the game was divided in region servers like Australia, Canada etc.) Good times. So sad that moments like these will be lost in time, like tears in the rain...
I remember my penguin used to "work" at the coffee shop. I was really disappointed when an update for some disney themed party turned the coffee shop into a smoothie shop and they never fixed it. Needless to say my penguin was out of a job.
i used to rp as a pookie and then when i went to someones igloo, if they were mean to the other pookies, i'd put on my penguin csi outfit (whatever thats called) and "arrest" them for child neglect
My 7-year-old aspiring filmmaker self was absolutely the “really intense director barking orders”. I really didn’t understand why nobody followed my instructions, I was wearing the directors cap AND holding a megaphone!
When I was a kid I not only had a Club Penguin subscription, I had a subscription to the official magazine. The owner of my local corner shop made sure that a copy of the magazine would be at her shop every month for me to buy; she was a really sweet Indian lady but she unfortunately faced racial abuse from staff over the phone when she called about an issue that she hadn't received. I always felt really bad about that. I'll always be grateful for her though and I still have some items that came with the magazine (puffle badges and a key chain).
i was absolutely OBSESSED with club penguin as a kid, and once during halloween season i was in the town promoting my haunted house igloo i painstakingly designed and i still remember how hurt i was by someone telling me "your igloo isn't scary enough". i was maybe 10 years old and it's not like club penguin sold blood splatter decor or something😭 what did they expect
I remember the “celebrity” penguins - Rockhopper, Gary, Candace, Aunt Arctic, Sensei, etc. If you got lucky, you could run into them if they were ever logged on. I remember checking “Trackers” that would tell you if they were online and on what server. Without even trying one time though, I got lucky enough to wander into the Cove when Rockhopper himself was there, and I got his special profile background.
i met the bassist for the penguin band and was disappointed at the time as i really would've rather met rockhopper or literally anyone else. ironic that i am now a bassist myself. maybe he subconsciously inspired me.
i remember hysterically sobbing in my living room in like 2010 because our internet messed up right as i was about to meet dj candace so i never actually got to get the special background
I ran into Rockhopper in the main area in front of the Night Club, but I wasn't fast enough to click on him before he waddled offscreen, and I was unable to find him after that, so I never got the background. The image of that red penguin moving to the right is embedded deep in my brain and associated with intense sadness to this day. Weird how dumb stuff like that can stick with you for decades.
When I was little, my older sister went on my account and said “Let’s discuss our current economic crisis” and got kicked from the server. I was upset with her at the time, but the older I get, the more disappointed I am by Disney not stanning free speech smh
Haven't seen one comment shouting out the man himself: Rockhopper. Looking through the telescope and seeing his ship get closer each day, to when he would port and me and my friends would be on the phone going onto different servers to find him and get the special background. Those were amazing times.
Yarr har har, you be right there ain’t enough about Rockhopper in these comments! Greatest Penguin that ever did live, though I admit a few of them landlubbers on the island came close. Why it feels like just yesteryear me an’ Yarr were sailin’ the high seas when we came ‘cross all them friendly faces. ‘‘Twas a great place to make friends… and coins!
My absolute *favorite* Club Penguin memories were the secret missions. I'm neurodiv and as a kid this ultimately meant I was pretty antisocial, or at the very least, never saw the social appeal that these games had to offer (I was on Neopets during the Golden Era and managed to never set foot in the neoboards lol) so I spent most of my time getting the "single player" experience on Club Penguin. That mostly meant just playing the minigames over and over, but when missions became a thing I lost my *mind*. These little story-based single player Club Penguin experiences were just god-tier to young me. It felt like I was finally getting something major without having to socialize with other players. My favorite one was the one where you befriend a little black puffle while you survived the wilderness. Good times. Thank god flashpoint has all the missions archived.
Yea that was my experience as well!! And that was my favorite mission too! Having to survive the wilderness and eventually stumbling into Herbert's lair and discovering his Evil Plans felt so high stakes at the time lmao
I feel like genuine effort was put into the missions and they'll always be memorable. The events based around real world holidays were also great parts of the single player experience. Collecting things and finding secret little things to click on that made you feel like you'd found something really special.
You mean you can still play the missions?? I LOVED this part of Club Penguin, the missions were my favourite, that's what I'm missing the most now that the game is gone...I'd love to be able to play them again!
as someone who was one of the first members in 2005, this was a true nostalgia trip. i remember when the dojo and stage came out, Rockhopper walking around, when they only had the red puffle, and when the spy headquarters blew up. i asked for a membership every christmas and roleplayed wolf packs in the forest with other players. eventually, i stopped playing around 2011, because i started disliking the changes. more and more stuff was exclusive to paying members and it lost a lot of the coziness of its early era.
That's the time I stopped playing too, I hated the disney advertisement and I missed when things were about Club Penguin not Disney :/ really annoying the way things went but I don't blame roguesnail for selling it, I probably would have too and I hate Disney!
strongly relate, i started playing in like 2008 i think but i got my 6 month membership every time i went to my 6 month dentist appointment as a reward for doing good-
yes i loved rockhopper so much!! i always got so excited when i went up to the lighthouse and could see his boat in the distance. and everybody just harassing him constantly when he would arrive. good times
“The underground swimming pool was the best hidden room” THAT IS SO TRUE! I’ve played on Club Penguin since 2009 and the most people I saw in there were three. And that was because the Halloween party turned the water into slime
I guess I do remember a lot of times where nobody else was in that room, but I thought it was pretty well known. Especially later on, once more people knew about the boiler room (which had a door connecting to the pool) and The Mine was also connected to it too.
I remember the day the Dojo opened. I hadn't been that hyped in AGES. But nothing, NOTHING compared to the days when a new secret mission dropped. (Honestly, the spy thing and all the lore and fanon it spawned could fill its own video.) Real ones remember "AA is the Director."
Yes I can't believe she didn't mention that!!! The spy missions were my favorite part of the game, I remember being heartbroken when they redesigned HQ and stopped making new missions 😭
They don't get talked about often as "myths" since they're so overshadowed by the iceberg, but I wanted to give a shout-out to the rainbow puffle and the golden puffle. They got their start as myths but Disney turned them into a real thing once they started running out of ideas for new puffles. I definitely have memories of watching UA-cam videos of people having them and thinking it was real.
Well, the golden puffle did originally come from a play at The Stage called “Quest For The Golden Puffle”. But, if I remember correctly, it was actually just a yellow puffle with gold paint on it. So then they eventually decided to make it into a real puffle, and made an actual event called “Quest for the Gold Puffle”
When I was little I wrote a whole essay about the Club Penguin Ninjas and sent it to the customer service email. Someone responded and they were so excited and amazed at my dedicated and said they would show it to all their coworkers. The essay detailed all the "proof" and legends that had become popular on the internet (this was when the dojo was only a dojo - no official ninjas anywhere). I've tried to track down the essay, but the email I used to have is long deleted and who knows what computer I used to write it. It lives on in my memory. I hope I made someone's day by sending it along to the employees.
Looking back it's not super surprising that I did this. My parents and I had a deal where if I wrote a little research paper they would buy me a 6 month membership to CP.
Oh my god I love your dedication!!😭 I bet those cp staff are super fascinated by a child's essay on penguin ninjas and became a historical relic for them
Ha ha, I think I remember this E-mail! I wasn’t the one that responded to it, but once a week we had a presentation of some of the best fan mail we had received and I remember something like this coming up. Would have been between 2006 and 2008 if I’m thinking of yours.
@johnyliltoe oh my gosh, that's amazing!! That timeframe is definitely around when this would've happened. That made me so happy hahaha thank you for telling me 😁😁
The phrase "waddle on" still triggers bad memories for me, when Pixie Hollow closed (and they outright stated they were closing it to focus on Club Penguin) they just told us to "waddle on to club penguin" as if it would fill the void Pixie Hollow left.
@@papastummyfuzz9281 nothing that horrible (for Disney anyway lol) but like op said, Pixie Hollow was abandoned for club penguin, to my understanding bc PH was mostly used by girls and had a smaller market. The movies I feel pretty strongly about and am similarly bummed that the last few didn’t make enough money to keep going (also that particular animation studio at Disney died I’m pretty sure). It’s just a shame that they essentially completely gave up on the IP because it was by far the most feminist franchise they owned, and the quality of the original books and movies were exceptional. I’m glad there’s better representation for little girls in general now, but that whole series was remarkable for the way it wrote women & respected their goals and feelings. It’s just kind of a shame how Disney tends to jump ship so quickly for the sake of profit when they can afford to support a few things creatively, but that’s kinda what they did to Club Penguin in the end too anyway.
At the pizza parlor, I saw super Mario get deported. A French chef got into a funny argument with a super Mario role player, called him a dirty Italian and called ICE to get him deported. Mario was hiding under tables and begging people in broken English to hide him. Was officially my last Club Penguin memory before it shut down.
I had a friend who's mom paid for my membership so my friend would have a friend to play with, and we played for years, long past when most of our friends had stopped. It was honestly a comforting and safe place for my friend and I to hang out and play, and I'll always appreciate it. Side note I can't believe that you didn't mention the pirate ship that would come in because iirc that was one big way for non members to get clothing, like a pirate hat or belt
did anyone else go to the coffee shop upstairs and read the “lore” books like Rockhopper’s journal? i LOVED the NPC lore & secret agent stuff of club penguin as a kid 😭
It's getting to the point where I'm starting to believe that Izzzy has a feed straight from my brain on what I've been thinking about lately. I swear that just last night I was imagining what an Izzzy vid on Club Penguin would be like. Super excited to watch this!
As someone who never actually played Club Penguin, even I am somewhat nostalgic for it. I still have a "choose your own adventure" book that is Club Penguin themed, in which you are a clandestine in a pirate's ship. I've always loved those types of books, but this is the only one that I actually own, so I cherish it a lot.
Same, I never played as a kid (wasn’t a fan of membership games until they all went down) but now I have a sudden urge to spam “waddle on” and “party in my Iggy” somewhere.
I'm so surprised no one is reminiscing the secret agent stuff! I only vaguely remember it, but I know I enjoyed it a lot as a kid. I wish I could remember more about it
I'm a GenX guy, so I absolutely love finding out about all these things younger people were into, and were completely invisible to me. So fascinating! Thanks for doing these videos.
Lol so am I, plus she's such a good storyteller and her scripts well researched, though a bit different Wang UA-cam channel is also great window into the culture we kinda missed out on.
I'm part of gen z, but i didn't have full access to the internet until around 2015, and by then i was too old to play games like this. I like learning about how other people my age find so much nostalgia for stuff like this though
I remember getting banned for starting "riots" on club penguin in protest of the inequality between members and non members. That was 10 years ago, pretty sure that's why I'm a socialist now.
Lmao same. I used to stand at the door of the pizza parlor and if someone came in wearing clothes I said "This is non-members only" And because they were kids who didn't know any better they actually did what I told them to and assumed I was a mod or something
I remember doing all the first-person secret agent missions before they were made public, that was my favorite thing to do Update: I went on a third party server to play them again and god. I might still be dumb because some of the puzzles really had me stuck.
I remember being irrationally convinced when Disney bought club penguin that they were going to make the game photorealistic and it made me so mad, I have NO idea why I thought that though, lmao
I would call my friend on the home phone to make sure we logged into the same world, then played card jitsu for hours on the family desktop in the living room with my mom watching over my shoulder. Ah good times. The secret agent story line was literally everything to me and those mini missions were so good.
Omg honestly same , the whole family sharing one computer which was in my mums room and we’d argue or beg for one more hour on club penguin we really didn’t know how good we had it
It’s crazy how you hit the nail on the head with a lot of the old games you cover. It would be cool to see you cover Toontown Online and its extensive history sometime. It’s insane that Pirates Of The Caribbean Online, Pixie Hollow, and Toontown Online ALL CLOSED on the SAME DAY on 9/19/2013 ALL with the excuse that they wanted to focus on Club Penguin. It was absolutely nuts and extremely frustrating for a lot of people who played those games.
I still play TTR here and there lol I remember i was so bummed when they were closing it down but there always seems to be a group of people who reboot it for free so that's cool
@@superxxamadeus4098 TTR honestly even works on it better than Disney ever did, they did a whole new expansion recently with field offices and it's a VERY fun time. Disney would've never done that for Toontown Online
AYO TOONTOWN ONLINE WAS MY SHIT AS A KID I STILL MISS IT (but luckily some fans made Toontown Online Rewritten so it's all good :) I do miss the characters being able to walk around the different playgrounds tho)
I played Club Penguin for years and my yearly Christmas gift for a long time was a membership. It actually got me heavily into drawing and clothing design which is still something I do for fun pretty much daily. I have a bunch of Disney Club Penguin pins and recently took them to Disney to show them off. The employees were always so excited to see them and talk about Club Penguin with me, it was great. It was my safe place for a super long time and I miss it a lot.
i've still got a bunch on mine too but i stopped bringing them because people would always try to trade for them and i never wanted to get rid of them lol
As a business major I intend to start using "If the profits begin to dip, time to jump ship." I'll start a grassroots campaign. Another great video Izzzy! I would love to see you do a video on Build-a-Bear's version of an MMO, that was my MMO of choice!
@@ionastewart8814 I unfortunately don't remember the music all that well, could be due to never playing the game with the volume on. I just remember spending countless of hours on the game and getting really excited everytime I got a new bear to add to the game! I don't remember if Build-a-Bareville had a premium memberships or not, but I definitely made my parents spend a good amount of money on the bears and all the accompanying accessories -- so I'm sure it evened out 😂
@@Miniarty7 I remember the bear-ownership class structure, haha! I don't live in the United States so I could never buy any of the bears, so I got slapped with restrictions with things I could buy/where I could go. Stuck, staring with envy at all the players with a bear in their backpack that got to ride around on a scooter. At least we free-players had the cafe :P
@@ionastewart8814 aw that really does suck. I could be misremembering here, but I thought free to players got the option of either a dog, cat, bunny or bear to have? But like you said, you're not in the US so maybe that portion was blocked for you? My memories of the game are super vague at best, but I remember it being a decent attempt at an MMO. I do remember the site was running a summer camp event that coincided with the sale of either the Dairy Queen ice cream bears or the Girl Scout cookies bear. Regardless, I remember not knowing how to play and win this marshmallow roasting mini game and would always get so frustrated that I kept burning the marshmallows 🤣
A couple years back some friends and I played CPO for a few months. We ran into an actual child groomer who was asking players for their age then inviting young girls to his igloo. We raided his igloo by going undercover and warned the people he added that he was a groomer. We reported him but of course nothing came of that. We stayed in that igloo until he logged off.
It feels good to see a comment like this amongst a sea of horrific things happening to children and innocent people online. Thanks for being a decent person and for sharing about it!
Clup Penguin Online is one of the most horrific, fucked up, and outright *disgusting* stories on the internet, and I can't believe that it even happened at all. May Riley burn in hell.
I REALLY hope that along with the cease and desist, the authorities went after him. If Disney managed to take him down, it would surely give people more confidence to combine their forces and go against him.
@@panicatthefallout7710 lmao I never said it was? I’m just saying this person is blowing it out of proportion and I think it’s funny that that’s the worst thing they’ve seen on the internet
I was at the goodbye party thing, I remember violently sobbing in front of my computer while my parents looked at me like “What the hell is happening” it felt like the end of my life, I might have been a tad dramatic HOWEVER I had so much fun on that game
My sister was a member on Club Penguin and we liked to do the thing where you turn your igloo into some kind of business. We had done things like make her igloo into a restaurant or school. But my favorite story is when her igloo was a doctor's office. Me and my sister work together when she does stuff like this because we could be on two separate computers but in the same room so I can tell her if what she's trying to say is showing up. So she would be the main person in charge but I would also "work" at whatever our business was. We would usually make friends with people who would eventually also "work" for us. This one night we logged off and told everyone we were going to bed. The next morning we logged back on and went to her igloo and a bunch of people that we were playing with the night before were still in her igloo. I'm guessing we went back to the same server that we were using the night before and the people that were there were probably on me or my sister's friend lists, but we had just logged on and therefore hadn't opened up her igloo to the public yet, and because Club Penguin will automatically log you out if you're inactive for ten minutes, this meant that either they were active in my sister's igloo all night or because they were probably also friends with each other, if they did leave, they came back to the same server and used to feature where you could teleport to wherever your friend was. But as soon as we showed up in her igloo, they were like, "Yay! She's back!" I think about it sometimes and how crazy it was.
CP Rewritten had a serious issue with the previous owner, Codey. Thank you for covering this - it's imperative that people know exactly how much damage he did both to the moderators' wellbeing and the security of the site and its users. I was one of the people that got doxed by him for being a member of staff that refused to resign - though I can't exactly prove my identity or disclose which moderator I was, me and some of the other staff had a lot of our social medias compromised and had our addresses, facebooks, family members names etc. posted on there for the world to see. I had pizzas sent to my address since you can't SWAT people in the UK, where a lot of the moderators were/are based (I'm not sure about 2022 staff - I don't keep up with it anymore as I have completely distanced myself from the CPPS community because of what happened to me and a few other ex-staff members of Rewritten). This video is very informative and I understand that some of the information was probably very hard to get a hold of - thank you for your research. I'm very grateful that someone actually spoke about Rewritten in their reflection of Club Penguin's history and the glaring security issues that make the CPPS community so dangerous.
> I'm not sure about 2022 staff The game is mostly run by stu and Thorn, which are names you'll probably recognize. They're currently the only two admins. The main and only public developer is Gravix, who joined the team mid-2020 and almost single-handedly rewrote the game from Flash to HTML5. Aside from that, pretty much all moderators joined the team in 2020 or later (exception being Stevie and RogerDan), and every single one I've spoken with has been incredibly kind. I've got faith in the current team to build a positive community (even if I don't agree with some of their other decisions, like implementing more AS3 content)
shout out to all the roleplayers on club penguin, whether you were a pookie... or their pet dog, a highschool cheerleader or a football player who hung out at the ice rink, a budding actor over at the stage, a psa or epf agent and even if you made intricate and masterful igloos with fantasy settings for people to play in... you were *truly* the backbone of the game.
As a non native English speaker, I can say that about 60% of my English literacy came from Club Penguin (Additional 30% came from The Sims, and the rest from school and other video games)
omg deeper into the pookie part of club penguin, there used to be competitions that the “moms” set up and it would have like 50 different pookies and they’d have to dress up in different themes that the mom would pick and theyd eliminate ppl by throwing snowballs at them 😭😭 it was like who had the rarest/most items
I remember that, they were called Pookie Contests and the whole craze around rare items caused most of the playerbase to resort to going on websites like Penguin Lodge and CpAdder to hack the items into their accounts 😭😭😭 eventually everyone involved got 72 hour bans and their hacked clothes removed but eventually they started adding old items again towards the end of the game's lifespan
This was a GREAT video, you covered everything... EXCEPT MISSIONS!! THE LIL SECRET AGENT THINGY!! THE TELEPHONE BOX AND AUNT ARCTICA AND THE POLAR BEAR 😭😭😭 That was my favourite part of club penguin... Also the fishing mini game and the giant red mullet in the ski lodge (?)
The secret agent thing was my favorite thing about Club Penguin. I just remember as a kid that the biggest plot twist was that Aunt Arctica was the chief of the secret agents.
It can’t be in the video because agents aren’t supposed to reveal the agency! (Lol man I miss it so much although I do remember having an actual nightmare about Herbert when I was 9)
I definitely remember using one of those membership generators, along with coin generators too. I have a vague memory of the membership generator ACTUALLY working but only once, and the coin generator almost always worked without a hitch
I remember using the coin generator and being ecstatic when I saw that it worked, I also remember finding a weekly membership code giveaway on an online kids' games site, but it would only give you one code per account. Seeing that it worked, I promptly proceeded to make a shit ton of dummy accounts and get an absurd amount of codes and told my friends to do the same. I remember having membership up until the latter end of the games' lifespan bc I had ran out of codes by then
does anyone remember penguin lodge? because i remember putting my login information in there all day every day whenever i went penguin broke and it worked somehow, and looking back im so confused about how I didn't get scammed?? it worked for items too
@@naivebody i remember one coin generator that didn't work and got you banned but then one coin generator that did work perfectly, but then my child self was like "i don't wanna use this because it feels like cheating" so that i would have an excuse to spend all day playing puffle round up or coffee catch
I remember having the urge to play Club penguin one day and when I searched up the website, I learned that the site shut down the day before lmao I almost cried
I used to use those membership generators! I had a coingen that actually worked, but I was so scared of being banned I never used it more than like twice. Eventually I ended up on a free giftcard giveaway site asking for my mum's credit card information, that was the point where the computer was taken away from me lol
i remember using penguin lodge and cpcheats to get as many coins as i wanted and it actually worked. also in 2014 there was an item leak that allowed every item including the beta hat to be obtained through these generators. i eventually got banned for this as i was dumb enough to flaunt my beta hat in public.
the part where they actually tipped the iceburg has me in tears, i cant imagine being on the server on that last day. here i am, 12 years later and it still has a special place in my heart
club penguin spy missions were the best shit on the internet, lighting that little fire in the wilderness with the wild puffle was truly the peak of my childhood
As a toddler I played Freddie Fish and Putt Putt and Pajama Sam etc so this point and click adventure style game was perfect for me. After Club Penguin I discovered Ace Attorney for the DS which had a similar collecting evidence point and click stage. Honestly as simple as they are I just can't get enough of clicking nearly static images and feeling smart about it lmao
I actually recently got a DS from my grandma who was a "gamer" back when the DS released. I played club penguin when I was a kid and was so happy to get the DS as she also gave me the mission game
Club penguin was part of my childhood in a peripheral way, I knew of it, I knew kids who played it, but never played it myself. I'm only halfway through the video but the staff adding an easter egg for the iceberg being tipped just warmed my heart, the fact these devs were so in touch with their audience and rewarded them like that- I wish more of these kind of games had that kind of appreciation for their audiences.
I don’t think Club Penguins name is “tainted“, I haven’t even heard of the drama and neither have any of my friends, thankfully. This game was my entire childhood, and I'm so glad u covered it!
I was so proud of myself and my penguin because I took part in every event, always bought everything that non-members could buy, checked codes every week basicly and after like 3 years playing I believe I had a pretty solid wardrobe (my igloo was still pretty empty though). I was so proud that I worked hard and was able to look cool thanks to it. Also collecting the stamps to my book. So many hours spent on this game. When they shut it up and my items didn't transfer to the new version (that I hated from the start, but was willing to give it a chance for memories sake) and the whole game lagged for me on top of it I was so mad. Deleting club penguin broke my heart. I was happy when rewritten became a thing, but sadly with all of my items lost it just didn't feel the same. I was still rooting for them and logged in once in a while. Sad to see it is now gone too. Disney just killed it.
I was so lucky to have been there for one of the Fall Fairs and Water Party events because they had some of the coolest items non-members could wear. From there, I sported a pink tiara and shell necklace for my entire Club Penguin career
Yeah, that was part of the reason that playing the Private Servers like CP Rewritten were never as fun to me. I did have a membership for pretty much the entire time that I played the game, so I bought literally everything. I remember I had certain items that were literally only available one time in the entire history of the game, like from parties/events that only happened once. I had items that were hidden in the catalogs and a lot of people didn’t even know about. I bought every single possible item for my igloo, all the different puffle hats and stuff, literally everything. And I had at least one puffle of each color. I bought all of the secret agent gear and I even had all the items from completing the PSA missions, and I had all the Card Jitsu belts and the different ninja costumes. I had a whole ton of different pins and backgrounds, I even met some of the mascots and got special backgrounds from them. I lost so much stuff. And I just didn’t think it was worth it to try to get all of it back. Because it wasn’t as much fun anymore, since my brother and all my friends had stopped playing a long time ago. And because I knew that there were so many items that I would never be able to get back, because they were only available from special one-time events or meeting the mascots or stuff like that. Plus, why put in so much time and effort even attempting to get all my stuff back (which like I said, wouldn’t even be possible anyway. At least not if I wanted literally *all* of it) when CP Rewritten or any other CPPS I tried playing on could just randomly get shut down without warning at any time. So if I had tried to get my stuff back, or just start a new collection of stuff, it would’ve just resulted in me losing all of it all over again. I didn’t see any point in doing that to myself.
I absolutely used those "generators" I remember in Halo: Reach there was this cool as hell helmet that had like a skull and blue flames or something and it was ultra ultra rare so I went online to find some way to get it. Not sure how a PC thing would have done anything for my Xbox, but anyway
I know a couple people who worked for Club Penguin. One before Disney and one who started after. I visited the "Disney Canada" office. It was really neat and really depressing to hear them talk about it at the end. I never actually played Club Penguin but they were heartbroken by it all.
As a Russian kid, growing up we had a similar online world which was basically a translated version of club penguin. Years later when I found out about club penguin I always wanted to know more about it, but it was after its closing so I never got the chance. This was a very interesting deep dive into the whole thing for me.
My sister worked as one of the play testers for Disney Infinity. They moved her from Disney Interactive to the mobile app division before they closed it, and she hated being stuck playing Finding Dory bejeweled looking for bugs for weeks on end. She was given a ton of the Infinity figures and honestly some of them are pretty cool. I'm a particular fan of the star wars ones.
Suprised you didn't go over how ninjas were a GIANT myth in Club Penguin before Card Jitsu was released. Even bigger than the iceberg myth in my opinion. They had little easter eggs and secrets suggesting the existence of ninjas for YEARS. Until finally, and I remember it oh so well, the club penguin halloween party of 2008. They finally had the big reveal at the end of it! Great memories
I played club penguin before it was bought by Disney, and I swear that was the golden age of Club Penguin. There was still a lot of events, and you actually got quite a few free items to wear for non members, it was awesome! The charm was still very much there, and since they were already at their limit for most servers, I remember the servers were always full of people. I found when I would try to play after the acquisition, a lot of servers felt very empty. I slowly just stopped playing. There was also the charm since the game wasn't finished yet, it was a secret to go to the dojo, as it wasn't even labelled, you just had to figure it out. Which was also kind of part of the charm. I was able to get a membership for 1 year, and it was honestly one of my favorite child good memories. What a glorious year.
I was never a member or able to play at home but I remember my close friend had a membership during 2005-06 and she would let me play sometimes. How fun and niche those early days were, when I went back years later in my middle school computer class it had been bought by Disney and was totally different by that point. the art style was not as appealing and they had removed all of the fun things you could do for free, all the penguins were also wearing wigs (?) and there was all sorts of corporate sponsorship. I'm sure that expanded club penguins reach very far but they lost the original charm of the game
God this brings back memories. Can we talk about all the different cliques of people in this game? Roleplaying was insane. There was the whole adoption center in the pet shop with pookies, the furry people who would put on a whole show and battle in the forest, the preppy jock/hot penguins at the stadium and beach, the cool penguins who chilled out in the lodge or pool area, the mermaids at the cove, the band kids at the lighthouse, etc.
i did literally all that, especially roleplaying pokemon and warrior cats in the forest and cave tho. there was actually some inter-server drama bc people in our roleplay group left abominable to play on sleet, which was a smaller server, and those of us that were loyal to abominable got mad lmao
I had a Club Penguin paid membership for a while until my mum realised she was still paying it and cancelled it. In that time I bought myself a white puffle so once my membership ended I actually had 3 puffles and I felt like I'd found some sort of sweet loophole. Less fun was that I'd bought a lot of clothes and when you stop a membership you can no longer wear them but Disney would still keep them in your inventory reminding you of what you lost access to when you stopped paying them.
In the summer of 2007, I was on holiday in Canada visiting family. My grandmother had heard that the offices were in the nearest big city to where she lived, so one day we drove down and found the building where the company was located. We told the receptionist I was a big fan and took a picture in front of the sign, and that was when they told us that I could come back later that day for a tour of the offices. I ended up getting to see the whole workplace with a bunch of other kids and got to see the staff working on and designing lots of new stuff for the game. I got to play Club Penguin games with the staff members (who told me I was even better at them than them 😂) and they even gave me a bag of puffle toys to take home with me for free! I was such a big fan and looking back on it now, it was such a cool and unique experience. It seemed like a really great place to work at one point and they all went out of their way to give all of us kids a fun day there. I’ll never forget Club Penguin! Thank you for the great video.
I was a dedicated club penguin wiki editor - when the website closed, I went onto our old chat (IRC at the time, lol) and so many of the old editors I remember were logged on. Such a special part of growing up for me
God I remember spending way too much time on club penguin. One of my fondest memories was actually managing to direct a proper play in the theater, dressed up with a megaphone and everything. Actually got everyone to dress up, had a rehearsal where everyone said their lines properly, and then we had a proper performance with an audience and everything. Still can't believe I managed to pull it off lol.
You discussing Pookies wrenched open a memory of waddling into the pet shop to just, you know, get a new puffle and seeing a wild cluster of penguins doing the pookie thing and child me was like “what are they Doing” and then I left with my new puffle and never participated lol. Thanks for explaining what all That was about!
God this opened up Pandora’s Box of forgotten endless childhood nostalgia for me. I remember doing insane chores around my house in exchange for Club Penguin memberships. This video was awesome. Thank you.
I still feel silly for not seeing how much of a shitshow CPO was sooner, especially because I was one of their biggest teacher's pets(a "snitch," if you will) The tragedy of it is that it really was an amazing server in terms of functionality and custom content. Had it been under better management, it would have risen even higher, I'm sure.
i mean at least we still have other servers. Club Penguin Rewritten is good for the old version and New Club Penguin is good for the post-2012 one. Though I haven't fully watched this video yet so maybe that opinion will change.
@@Bettersucksaul Snitch was a word we threw around for people who reported users who were breaking the rules. I was one of the biggest snitches to the point that ban evaders recognized me and would come after me lol it was funny
i played CPO back when it was known as virtual penguin and was much less popular, i had actually seen anthony/riley on there before and had chatted with him a couple times. this was obv before i learned what a massive scumbag he was, and once i learned what was going on from ex moderators and started speaking out against him i was permanently banned from virtual penguin lol. i never bothered playing cpo because i knew riley was running it
I was obsessed with penguins as a child, but my parents were afraid of letting me play online games. Anyway one time I burnt my hand by touching the water heater in the basement and my parents felt bad and let me play club penguin
core club penguin memory of mine was that there was this group of guys (who i later found out had no idea who each other were) and the only thing linking them was their guitars and having the same purple - or likewise - skin colour. i also had a guitar and purple skin. we played for a solid 20 minutes in the fishing hut, lining up in neat rows and playing on those damn guitars. i hope they're all doing well now. sort of exactly like the yellow group at 16:30
I only experienced membership through using a friend’s account but as a non-member I knew all the codes and all the ways to get free stuff. I think the best decision they made was making cardjitsu available for non-members because that’s my fondest memories of club penguin (also free clothes) and probably my favorite part of the game. I never made friends, I’d just rip people to shreds in the dojo lol Other cool stuff I liked was how the pizza mini game had a secret candy pizza version and also how certain puffles could play mini games with you, that was cute
i distinctly remember as a child never knowing what pookies were and just going into the pet shop saying "free pookie" out of curiosity until an ACTUAL pookie came up to me and stopped talking in the uwu baby voice to tell me that i wasn't a pookie because "pookies are yellow". i then just straight up went "i don't understand this this seems weird" and left and oh my god the bullet i dodged that day
being a pookie was HILARIOUS to me. id have my fun being babied and when i got bored id be like "i have a supwise", hide, then dress like an old lady. rinse and repeat
I used to “fall” into the fireplace as a pookie then I would change my penguins skin color from yellow to red. I would write, “BURNS” and then start screaming until my “mom” helped me. Then I got bored of being a pookie so sometimes I’d write in all caps, “THROWS TEMPER TANTRUM” or “ROLLS ON FLOOR”, “MAKES STINKY IN DIPPY” or “THROWS RATTLE” and id be loud past my “bedtime” until my parents kicked me out of their igloo. I wouldn’t leave so they went to someone else’s igloo and I followed them there and would continue to troll them. I totally understand why I got perma banned from club penguin. I don’t regret the trolling though it was fun
Why did I tear up three times watching this 😢 club penguin was a huge part of my childhood, I remember staying up until five am with my best friend, under the covers on a crappy old laptop with sticky keys. Good times. ❤
I think CP Rewritten is allowed to stay up because it’s technically branded and treated as an “educational archive”, which it probably manages to get away with since it features relatively minimal custom content compared to other private servers
They clearly just did it to "protect copyright laws" we need to remember that, for some stupid reason, if you don't act on your copyright laws then you "set up a precedent" for you not caring about said laws. Wich while unlikely, it has won a few cases on the side of the bootlegers. Enough at least for companies to take this shit seriously.
Oof lol not anymore. Apparently, whatever “protections” they had were not enough to stop Disney from shutting them down. You can’t just run ads on a site that features a Disney IP and expect the mouse to be okay with that.
Nothing will ever be as amazing to me as operation blackout, I literally remember not leaving my computer for that entire week except for school. I was soooo obsessed.
I am a young gen z'er in 2024, I have never played club penguin and didn't really even know anything about it until now, even so, I'm feeling emotional about the downfall of this beloved app. This video is extremely well made. Good job, I love this channel.
I remember being so obsessed with club penguin and moshi monsters when I was around the same age izzy mentioned playing it in that I actually stole my dad's credit card to buy memberships on both, but it was short lived when they recieved their monthly account summary at the end of the month and confronted me. I think I'll live with that guilt my whole life LMAO these games did things to us
Hey. At least your dad caught it. Some kids especially now. Spend hundreds in mobile games on their parents phone. Like sometimes parents have verification turned off. Their kids fingerprint in their phone or the kids know the password (which is the same for their bank then) and well. The kid can just click "yes" and spend money.

I usually used the trackers but accidentally meeting sensei with only one or two other people in a server is my claim to fame 😂

Oh I loved that mission. Also loved making that spicy puffle O so that the black puffle would ignite and melt the snow so you could escape.
YES HOLY SHIT YES
as someone who was one of the first members in 2005, this was a true nostalgia trip. i remember when the dojo and stage came out, Rockhopper walking around, when they only had the red puffle, and when the spy headquarters blew up. i asked for a membership every christmas and roleplayed wolf packs in the forest with other players. eventually, i stopped playing around 2011, because i started disliking the changes. more and more stuff was exclusive to paying members and it lost a lot of the coziness of its early era.
That's the time I stopped playing too, I hated the disney advertisement and I missed when things were about Club Penguin not Disney :/ really annoying the way things went but I don't blame roguesnail for selling it, I probably would have too and I hate Disney!
Yeah I remember being on the site pre-Disney. It was truly something special. I couldn’t type for shit back in 2006 but I still had a ton of fun
strongly relate, i started playing in like 2008 i think but i got my 6 month membership every time i went to my 6 month dentist appointment as a reward for doing good-
Me too! My best friend showed it to be in 05-06 I think. I remember dojo coming out and the OG agent missions. I have the DS games too
yes i loved rockhopper so much!! i always got so excited when i went up to the lighthouse and could see his boat in the distance. and everybody just harassing him constantly when he would arrive. good times

I remember distinctly when you didn’t take care of them, they’d leave a postcard and run away so the puffles are prob just vibing in the wild
Wait you were supposed to feed them
“The underground swimming pool was the best hidden room” THAT IS SO TRUE! I’ve played on Club Penguin since 2009 and the most people I saw in there were three. And that was because the Halloween party turned the water into slime
I guess I do remember a lot of times where nobody else was in that room, but I thought it was pretty well known. Especially later on, once more people knew about the boiler room (which had a door connecting to the pool) and The Mine was also connected to it too.
the swimming pool and boiler room always felt so weird to me
I loved hanging in the underground swimming pool omg

I remember the day the Dojo opened. I hadn't been that hyped in AGES. But nothing, NOTHING compared to the days when a new secret mission dropped. (Honestly, the spy thing and all the lore and fanon it spawned could fill its own video.) Real ones remember "AA is the Director."
YES club penguin lore was actually very interesting!! i was so obsessed with how they fleshed out the characters and the storylines in the missions
I rember the spy themes and loved to find clues in the rooms lol

it still works for me... what?
They don't get talked about often as "myths" since they're so overshadowed by the iceberg, but I wanted to give a shout-out to the rainbow puffle and the golden puffle. They got their start as myths but Disney turned them into a real thing once they started running out of ideas for new puffles. I definitely have memories of watching UA-cam videos of people having them and thinking it was real.
Ninjas too! 😄
Oh my god I love your dedication!!😭 I bet those cp staff are super fascinated by a child's essay on penguin ninjas and became a historical relic for them
@@mustachiomarshmallow they were so sweet when they responded to my email, I wish I had a copy of it ❤

Dang, virtual collateral damage by Disney
no literally though -- Pixie Hollow was the best online game. The whole Disney fairies franchise was done so dirty by the company in the end.
@@nataliep856 I never followed it, what happened??
Same
@@papastummyfuzz9281 nothing that horrible (for Disney anyway lol) but like op said, Pixie Hollow was abandoned for club penguin, to my understanding bc PH was mostly used by girls and had a smaller market.

The game is mostly run by stu and Thorn, which are names you'll probably recognize.
@@nathalielopez7989 Omg those sound fun, I think I missed out on them
Yeah, that was part of the reason that playing the Private Servers like CP Rewritten were never as fun to me.
I absolutely used those "generators"
I remember in Halo: Reach there was this cool as hell helmet that had like a skull and blue flames or something and it was ultra ultra rare so I went online to find some way to get it.
Not sure how a PC thing would have done anything for my Xbox, but anyway
I tried to use them in movie star planet
I know a couple people who worked for Club Penguin. One before Disney and one who started after. I visited the "Disney Canada" office. It was really neat and really depressing to hear them talk about it at the end. I never actually played Club Penguin but they were heartbroken by it all.
As a Russian kid, growing up we had a similar online world which was basically a translated version of club penguin. Years later when I found out about club penguin I always wanted to know more about it, but it was after its closing so I never got the chance. This was a very interesting deep dive into the whole thing for me.

"settle down in your igloo and grab your puffle" is possibly the gentlest sentence I've ever lived to hear
I remember seeing one of the Easter eggs in the lighthouse! It was a silhouette of one of the ninjas behind some barrels I believe

I lost interest around the first Disney IP tie-in
I agree. Disney ruined club penguin year after year since they bought it 🥺
I was never a member or able to play at home but I remember my close friend had a membership during 2005-06 and she would let me play sometimes.
This sums it up perfectly, thank you.
The 2008 medieval party was, and is to this day, the highlight of my entire life.

I do not mean this negatively

God this brings back memories. Can we talk about all the different cliques of people in this game? Roleplaying was insane. There was the whole adoption center in the pet shop with pookies, the furry people who would put on a whole show and battle in the forest, the preppy jock/hot penguins at the stadium and beach, the cool penguins who chilled out in the lodge or pool area, the mermaids at the cove, the band kids at the lighthouse, etc.
i was always so jealous of the cool penguin girls in the town center who wore the long hair with the bow in it, a hoodie and the diva sunglasses
@@klabby89 I was jealous of everyone who had clothes lol until I accepted my no-clothes status in life
i did literally all that, especially roleplaying pokemon and warrior cats in the forest and cave tho. there was actually some inter-server drama bc people in our roleplay group left abominable to play on sleet, which was a smaller server, and those of us that were loyal to abominable got mad lmao
In club penguin rewritten, I was that one dude with every item in the game.
@@klabby89 they also used to wear the old items, which were no more available 😢

Omg bro, you did the impossible. I could never 😂😂😭👍
You discussing Pookies wrenched open a memory of waddling into the pet shop to just, you know, get a new puffle and seeing a wild cluster of penguins doing the pookie thing and child me was like “what are they Doing” and then I left with my new puffle and never participated lol. Thanks for explaining what all That was about!
God this opened up Pandora’s Box of forgotten endless childhood nostalgia for me. I remember doing insane chores around my house in exchange for Club Penguin memberships. This video was awesome. Thank you.
Anything for the colored puffles
Hey nate! How u holding up?
I still feel silly for not seeing how much of a shitshow CPO was sooner, especially because I was one of their biggest teacher's pets(a "snitch," if you will)
The tragedy of it is that it really was an amazing server in terms of functionality and custom content. Had it been under better management, it would have risen even higher, I'm sure.
i mean at least we still have other servers. Club Penguin Rewritten is good for the old version and New Club Penguin is good for the post-2012 one. Though I haven't fully watched this video yet so maybe that opinion will change.
How were you a snitch?
holy heck I think i recognize you? i was in that server for a while and I was definitely a bit of a kiss ass at some times lol
@@Bettersucksaul Snitch was a word we threw around for people who reported users who were breaking the rules. I was one of the biggest snitches to the point that ban evaders recognized me and would come after me lol it was funny
i played CPO back when it was known as virtual penguin and was much less popular, i had actually seen anthony/riley on there before and had chatted with him a couple times. this was obv before i learned what a massive scumbag he was, and once i learned what was going on from ex moderators and started speaking out against him i was permanently banned from virtual penguin lol. i never bothered playing cpo because i knew riley was running it

core club penguin memory of mine was that there was this group of guys (who i later found out had no idea who each other were) and the only thing linking them was their guitars and having the same purple - or likewise - skin colour. i also had a guitar and purple skin. we played for a solid 20 minutes in the fishing hut, lining up in neat rows and playing on those damn guitars. i hope they're all doing well now.
sort of exactly like the yellow group at 16:30
I only experienced membership through using a friend’s account but as a non-member I knew all the codes and all the ways to get free stuff. I think the best decision they made was making cardjitsu available for non-members because that’s my fondest memories of club penguin (also free clothes) and probably my favorite part of the game. I never made friends, I’d just rip people to shreds in the dojo lol
Other cool stuff I liked was how the pizza mini game had a secret candy pizza version and also how certain puffles could play mini games with you, that was cute
i distinctly remember as a child never knowing what pookies were and just going into the pet shop saying "free pookie" out of curiosity until an ACTUAL pookie came up to me and stopped talking in the uwu baby voice to tell me that i wasn't a pookie because "pookies are yellow". i then just straight up went "i don't understand this this seems weird" and left and oh my god the bullet i dodged that day
Im confused pls explain lol

I deeply regret to say, I was a pookie-
being a pookie was HILARIOUS to me. id have my fun being babied and when i got bored id be like "i have a supwise", hide, then dress like an old lady. rinse and repeat
Hahahahahahhaa
😂😂

Probably also because it kept the old ruleset (from the original, and Disney era) too, which made it family friendly, unlike other private servers.
@@franktheprank7336 Might be confusing copyright with trademarks, which you do have to aggressively protect if you don't want to lose them.
@@kaymarrand9970 could be 😅 that's just what I heard. Im no law student or anything soooo 😗
Oof lol not anymore. Apparently, whatever “protections” they had were not enough to stop Disney from shutting them down. You can’t just run ads on a site that features a Disney IP and expect the mouse to be okay with that.
