  • A teenager with Tourette's syndrome shares his story.
TICTOC is used with permission from Mark Waters. Learn more at markwatersfilm.com.
Felix is 16 years old. He is struggling with the usual uncertainties of adolescence, but there's more he has to deal with: he has had Tourette's syndrome from a young age.
It's hard for Felix to deal with the taunts from people who don't understand he has a condition that's unpredictable and consuming. But it's even harder for him when they have preconceived notions about it, believe he can just stop or is ticing to get attention. But Felix wants people to know what it feels like to suffer from this condition, so he's speaking out.
Directed, shot and edited by filmmaker Mark Waters, this powerful short documentary immerses viewers with poetic, compelling intimacy into a much-discussed yet often misunderstood condition. The film creates a hypnotic portrait of a young teenage boy, using his words and perspective to offer a window into a state that's as much a world as it is a condition.
Tourette's is a neurodevelopmental syndrome characterized by multiple motor and vocal tics preceded often by unwanted urges that the afflicted person often can't control. Yet it's often flattened to someone swearing uncontrollably in popular media. That misunderstanding adds to the pain, isolation and torment that Felix experiences when he suffers from tics.
Felix's state of mind is transmitted in his own words as he talks about his life, and he's eager for people to truly understand what it means to grapple with this difficult condition. His voiceover, coupled with conversations with friends, detail his struggle with Tourette's uncontrollable force, as well as the shame he feels when outsiders taunt or insult him in the belief that he can choose to stop his tics. It's hard enough to when the urge to tic flares up, but it's even more difficult when he's told to shut up and simply can't.
As articulate, sensitive and open as Felix is, much of the film's singular emotive power comes from the arresting images. The visuals are stunning, sculpted with moody shadow and light and framed with an eye for poetic detail. When coupled with an equally thoughtful sound design and past footage of Felix's tics, they collectively evoke the strange, weightless isolation of Felix's world. They also provide an intimate point-of-view of what going through Tourette's syndrome looks like -- and it's much less sensationalistic than most people are led to believe.
Longlisted for a short film BAFTA, TICTOC is an unforgettable, riveting and profoundly humane watch. It lingers in viewers' memories well after viewing for several reasons. Felix himself is a sympathetic presence, and his willingness to be vulnerable about something that he struggles with evokes empathy. He's framed within a film that uses the unique power of cinematic craft to create an emotional and psychological experience that feels like its subject's headspace. There's a quietness that can sometimes be lonely or peaceful; there are almost surreal images that capture the fright of being unable to stop the tics from happening. It all culminates in a plea for understanding and compassion, and to be treated in a way that retains humanity and kindness, not mockery and judgment.

@@felixsanderson7805 Very best to you Felix, I know you'll be OK! My son had TS. He had a very rough period when he was about 14 yo to about 16 yo. He had mostly motor tics, including full body ones. A few audible tics. He tried some medication (Topiramate) but really did not like it, made him really slow and foggy in the head. After a few months he quit the meds, and the tics gradually stopped. He's 25 yo now, and very rarely has some minor motor tics. I think it's common for the tics to gradually subside - I hope and pray that for you. Good for you for speaking out - I also hope that it serves to educate people so they aren't so mean about it. God bless.

Thank you all for your kind comments, 103 so far. Felix is 19 now, and stays sane by keeping physically fit, with weight-lifting, punch bags, etc. Dare I say it? but his worst episodes have become less frequent. He has some happy times, supported by some really loyal friends including a lovely girlfriend, and wonderful supportive parents. Felix has great empathy with other people with disabilities or neurological disorders of various sorts, and can cast aside his own problems to go out of his way to help them. But when leaving after a rare visit to a pub a few weeks ago he was punched without provocation by a total stranger, who broke his jaw in two places.
I am his paternal granddad, or step-granddad to be precise, but the only one he has ever known in person.

Seems to me that "the uneducated general public" are the problem. They can't be changed overnight despite such efforts as this film. Even health professionals are going to react unexpectedly, until they get to know each individual case of Tourette Syndrome. However, it seems that pets (even other people's pets) may be less reactive than the average human. Which brings me to those environments that may be suitble for employment for this chap.
Few people and lots of animals, open rural spaces, agriculture, horticulture and forestry, river management, fishing, solo sailing/UA-cam Vlogging, etc, etc, etc. Mostly nature and few pesky people, if that's possible to bring in an income for sustenance.

Our younger daughter and younger son are showing both vocal and motor tics, so more than likely will be diagnosed with Tourettes at some stage. Your story is both heartbreaking and inspiring. You show a true version of Tourettes, not something mainstream from the media and movies that don't understand. Tourettes has so many different levels and tics - each person is different and experiences Tourettes in different ways - and deals with it in different ways. I wish we could get your video out there more to show everyone.

So being 18 or 19 now, I'm curious how he has progressed. I was hoping for a follow up to this great message of a film. One would think with all the progression in medicine and science there would be a better treatment than antipsychotics. My heart goes out to this young man and the many people who suffer from this disorder.

Gentlemen, an excellent production!!! You have certainly created greater awareness in me.
I appreciate a 21 minute segment from your world is in no way sufficient but I made an observation.
When you were speaking Felix, it seemed the ticks subsided or at least reduced in severity (couldn't see your whole body at times).
Do you find this to be the case? Are there any therapeutic interventions available to redirect 'signals' in the brain, to different routes?

Hi Felix, thanks for this informational story on your life. My husband has Tourette’s and people need to understand this condition more. The older he gets the more pronounced his tics become and people staring at him make him super uncomfortable. I am always glad when someone just asks if he is ok or just wants to know why he tics. I assume and can understand that it is different so people stare but someone asking is so much easier for him.

Through the movie you informed so many people about this condition. You can do nothing but only think highly of yourself, of this uniqueness which boosts our confidence. Humans are such they always demean people who are not like the "lot". Their loss who thinks so, isn't it Felix?

Wait… is this the same Mark Waters that did Mean Girls? It’s unlikely… but that’s such a cool coincidence.
Edit: I should probably say how amazing this was to watch, I’m glad that there’s people standing up for what it right. It’s disgusting how some people are treated for something they can’t handle.

I don't know why this crossed my mind, and I don't want it to become something it's not, but I'd date someone with Tourettes. Their tics do not define who they are, and if I love someone, I would love all of them. I think people that bully others because of something out of their control is just dispicable and honestly, I don't know how humans can be that way. I applaud him for being so vulnerable and helping raise awareness.
