  • A veterinarian hides her depression.
    KEEP IT QUIET is used with permission from Yaya. Learn more at vimeo.com/yaya....
    Corey is a veterinarian who lives with her grown daughter and works in an animal clinic. She also is suffering from severe depression, which she struggles to keep hidden from her family and friends.
    She navigates many small but cutting indignities and challenges as she looks after everyone but herself. But soon she reaches her breaking point and contemplates the worst.
    Written and directed by Yaya, this powerful, thoughtful short drama tackles the weighty topics of depression and suicidality as its main character struggles to conceal her mental health struggles from the world around her. Many narratives tackle these issues, but this short offers a unique angle, grounding its story in Corey's quotidian reality and dramatizing the efforts to hide it.
    Corey is a very relatable, everyday character, and the storytelling carefully builds a series of tableaux that illustrates her life. These scenes -- often shot in wide frames, composed in slightly abstract, removed framings and often favoring overhead shots -- function as a group of snapshots that offer different angles on Corey's character and circumstances.
    She's a put-down daughter with a casually cruel father in one; a warm and competent veterinarian in another. Corey is often pictured off-center or tucked away in the back of the scene as if she's in danger of being marginalized in her own life. It is a richly variegated portrait, but it also captures the essential numbness at the core of her existence.
    The approach could be potentially distant and overly cerebral, but actor Rusty Schwimmer grounds viewers with a phenomenal performance that feels lived-in, genuine and precise. As Corey's suffering magnifies and she has a harder time hiding it, she starts to spiral, reaching a point of desperation. Suicide, for her, isn't a wish for death, but a longing to stop the suffering that has become overwhelming.
    Many performances of depression portray it as sadness or listlessness, but Schwimmer's portrayal -- and the gift of KEEP IT QUIET -- gets at a fundamental truth of depression. More than just sadness or "feeling down," it's profound loneliness, isolation and hopelessness. It also portrays how easy it is for people to hide it, and how many people around someone with depression simply don't pay attention enough to notice it. Yet ultimately this concealment only leads to more isolation, compounding the psychological weight until it gets unbearable. Corey reaches that point, but the film's unique ending foils her attempt, offering a much-needed catharsis for both Corey and the audience. Facing the depth of feeling within, there's finally space for some fragile hope -- and gratitude for the strange interventions of fate.

      And you have to be so in tune to look for symptoms and expressions of pain or other indicators which can be quite different from animal to animal even in the same species. While a doctor can ask, "where and how badly does it hurt?"

    Omg. Rusty Schwimmer. ANOTHER unsung hero of the acting world. She is so fabulous. She is so amazing. She never gets the screen time in ANYTHING I've ever seen her in and it's criminal. The first time I saw her in a movie was when I was a kid and I watched A Little Princess. I urge everyone to see it if you haven't. And her character, as criminally per usual, was a supporting role but she was magnetic in her portrayal as the sweet, wannabe harsh and cruel but wasn't, sister of the evil sinister headmistress of the girls' school where the movie takes place. I urge everyone to see it.

    I find myself coming back to this video every few weeks since I first watched it this past summer. I remember when I first watched it, I was just so stunned and literally cried throughout, then broke down at the end. I couldn’t believe what I just watched. I’d never seen a film before that just captures the feeling of isolation that so often happens when you’re depressed. It’s all just too accurate. No one seems to know but yourself. Unfortunately, I relate so much to the main character.

      The cat's death is not the final straw. The vet was already over her edge and in serious danger; and now, after the cat died, I would be worried. Inspite of her horrible depression, she wouldn't shoot her cat. Never the cat. She wanted to destroy herself. She meant business. She loaded that gun to get rid of herself. The cat was sensitive to look after the vet, but got scared of the gun and ran. When cats get scared, they go crazy, and she didn't want to scare the cat. It was an accident, because she fell with a loaded gun. She herself, didn't think straight. She could have shoot anyone or anything. I hoped it was a street light, but then... her worst nightmare. In the story she didn't tell anyone about her depression. It is sad; at funerals family and friends cry, because they didn't know. Really?! For some families it is something to be ashamed of. Some patients can loose their jobs. And so it goes. The person with depression is not the problem, but family and the community with their own ignorance and judgmental ideas.

    Ngl i cant deal with animals dying especially if you're the one doing it to them as a human by putting chemicals into their system... It hurts, feel nothing if its humans but so much when it animals unless those humans are decent people then its hurts just as much as it hurts when its animals, its not fair but i understand putting them down when they very sick and or struggle but then dont do that to them and not your own species.

    The ending was way too predictable.

      Life is predictable and that. Is the comedy

    • @NothingMaster
      @NothingMaster 2 роки тому +1

      @@johndwolynetz6495 Nothing has been predictable in my life, but only by design. A life fundamentally governed by entropy, evolution, the X factors, mutations, changing social norms, and the uncertainty principle is inherently chaotic and unpredictable. Working predictabilities into the fabric of existence is like forcing the hand of futility. Gravity doesn’t act in space.
      Also keep in mind: Movies are not bound by the forces and the niceties of the human predicament and that’s part of their magic. When you pump predictability into them they lose their element of surprise and their entertainment factor.
