  • I made a monster!!
    Looking to add cool new minis to your collection? Well check out this homemade gelatinous cube. A classic and iconic D&D monster, an original Gygax creation i believe, and great fun to use in your encounters. I made this one from mostly CFS Water Clear 2 part epoxy resin, with a few skeleton parts thrown in for good measure. These big fellas slide around dungeons, and basically absorb anything and everything, and then dissolve it within their bodies. I wanted a ghostly blue/green colour for mine, and rusty old weapons on the inside.
    PS: I know its not a perfect cube, i dont care...its still cool :)

    I like your sense of humor. Free Hugs is appropriate for a gelatinous cube. The hugs that won't let you go, or the last hug you will ever need!

    Water effects are the one thing I've shied away from in model-making. I had previously tried making ponds and pools with glue and thinned down Clearfix, but they all shrunk, contracted and warped so I gave up and returned to my forests and rocks. I may have to invest in some of that two part epoxy. It looks great and knuckle-breakingly solid. Is it heavy when set?
    I'm sure I saw someone tackle that floating items suspended in resin problem. I think they used fine, clear fishing line to hold the pieces in place before carefully pouring the resin. The clear line would then not be visible through the resin as it is clear.
    I love the idea of making your own monsters. I'd love to see more DIY monsters. I've always wanted to make my own Treant/Tree-man/Ent. Giant spiders, shambling mounds, earth elementals would all make good, relatively simply home builds if you pick the right materials.
    One last thing, I really need one of those mini rotary tools. I didn't know they came that small. *Scoots off to eBay*

    • @irongryphon
      @irongryphon  4 роки тому +1

      It's no heavier than a solid piece of plastic I'd say. And yeah I like all those ideas for monsters 👍🏻😀
      The rotary tool I have is fairly low in power due to its size but since I only use it for miniatures its perfect and won't rip them to bits if I get heavy handed

    I made one of these last year. It's hollow and bottomless so it can be placed over a mini when they get engulfed.
    I like the color and opaque gel feeling here. Mine is quite translucent.

    • @irongryphon
      @irongryphon  4 роки тому +2

      I thought of making mine bottomless and hollow too, but alot of people often use some quite pokey models (by that I mean they use models with long weapons or dynamic poses) and I figured a hollow cube would have to be quite abit bigger to engulf them, so for ease I went with a solid one 👍🏻😊

    • @mikefranco5627
      @mikefranco5627 4 роки тому +1

      @@irongryphon I agree. I have some pretty dynamic minis that I've been printing lately that may not work well. Just real cool to see my players freak when their mini gets engulfed and you can see them inside the cube. Might be a fun and easy build for you to crank out if you need some extra content.

      If you have some clay, you could make small skulls. Shields can be made with buttons, clay and some paint. A toothpick can also be used for as a spear going trough the cube.

    So cool, another video this week :3!
    you're really brave to have cast this into expended pvc, I really feared that it would leak and/or corrupt the mold, but it worked out, gg! As for another try (but I guess you would not retry this as you've got already a slime now), we can consider using plastic film against the wall of the mold (idk if plastic film can be corrupt by epoxy, so maybe a bad idea too): plastic film could give a glossy and chaotic/fluid texture to the slime. As for the item/bones inside, I imagine that you could go for more step for casting, but I do fear it's not a good idea due to the difference of color of all these differents kinds of epoxy layers. It's clever to have that made in one go. I've never seen any crafter out there to have made a slime, and the result is well made. Congrats!
    Always a pleasure to see your videos. You are giving me the motivation to craft with your attention to detail. Anyway, this is really a good moment that i watch your videos. Keep up the good work! (sry for eng, must be full of errors, idc, sending you good vibes)

    • @irongryphon
      @irongryphon  4 роки тому +1

      Honestly I didn't know if the expanded pvc would work at all, it was a learning experience for me. Usually I would cast into a silicon mould and the results are usually excellent. But having no silicon I wanted to try the pvc.
      I'm unsure about the plastic film, it's worth a try though.
      Thank you very much for watching, it's much appreciated. Nothing wrong with your English 😅 have a great day buddy

    just wonder could you have used Vaseline or cooking oil as a mould release, the washed it off with hot soapy water and a tooth brush ( I've never used resin so have no idea) I make gelatinous cubes from hot glue make a cube in parts. glue my dead bits and old weapons where I want them on the cube I leave the cube hollow so they can actually absorb a figure on the table then I paint with a glaze go over with glossy modge podge ( I even texture it a bit too)

    • @irongryphon
      @irongryphon  4 роки тому

      Not entirely sure if I could have used vaseline or cooking oil. Vaseline is probably a decent idea, but if I make another one I'll probably try to make a silicon mould 😅

    As a diorama, looks great.
    For playability....would it be possible to invert it, and drill a hole with a 1.5" bit to have a place to insert a player mini for engulfment?
    This making the walls thinner might also help the opaque issue

    • @irongryphon
      @irongryphon  2 роки тому +1

      Drilling out a hole could be possible, I would probably recommend suspending a 1.5" cube in the "mould box" that you can then remove to reveal a 1.5" space in the centre of the finished model. For this one I just place an engulfed model on top of it or to one side 🙂👍🏻 great suggestions though, and thanks for watching
