The deliciously eccentric life and art of Ivor Cutler by his biographer Bruce Lindsay

  • The full and extraordinary story of “the Zelig-like” Cutler - poet, performer, broadcaster, playwright, surrealist, humorist - is mapped out in Bruce Lindsay’s exceptional new book, ‘Ivor Cutler: A Life Outside the Living Room’. Most of us discovered him through the patronage of fans like John Peel - or first saw him as part of the Magical Mystery Tour cast - but this fascinating conversation covers the early years too, his time as a progressive schoolteacher, the formative influence of Kafka and the Goons, his big break into TV via Ned Sherrin and his immediate adoption by the counter-culture. Has there ever been anyone remotely like him before or since? At one point Bruce reads a section of Life In A Scotch Sitting Room - with its echoes of Under Milk Wood and Sir Henry At Rawlinson End - and there are tales of gruts for tea, his fear of noise, the time he left an overheated hotel room to sleep on a station platform and a Denmark Street agent weeing in a sink.

Ivor was always quite popular up here in Scotland. His material was regularly broadcasted on late-night radio. He is a national treasure. Great interview by the way.

Fantastic! Thanks so much for this one! I was lucky enough to see Mr Cutler at what I believe was his last appearance (well after the last performance filmed by the BBC) upstairs in Waterstones bookshop, Hampstead where he read from some of his books. He seemed quite frail but was in good form. I was overwhelmed with giggles at one point, long after others had stopped laughing - he fixed me with a stern stare for what seemed like an eternity, then said "You'll BURRRST!" explosively, with a twinkle in his eye, which of course just left me all the more helpless. A wonderful memory.

He walked past me once in Richmond and I screamed with excitement on the inside.
The inside of me, that is.

I first encountered Ivor Cutler when he was doing the rounds in the mid-80s, on Whistle Test and in session on John Peel's show.
I didn't know at the time that he had been around for so long, even then!

Ha ha, I remember that noisy harmonium, and that wonderful voice … it was compelling listening on Peel, without really understanding what I was listening to

Was first introduced to Ivor in my school common room and stole the tape. I later admitted it and the girl that owned it wanted it back, it was precious, but I went out with her best pal just to rub salt in the wounds. Went to see Ivor a number of times in Glasgow and finally in London. It was a unique experience.

So would Ivor have met Paul McCartney through Roger McGough or through The International Times? Did he contribute to IT b/c he knew Paul, or did he know Paul b/c he contributed to IT? chicken or egg question.
