Again, it is a still image. They do look sharp in the animation from what I can see, at least in contrast to most characters. And Reinhard has character development this season so it's cool to see him gain more of a personality seen in his design instead of remaining generic. A year has passed so it makes sense that some characters would look different as well. I'm just wondering why Elsa even has a redesign... unless we're getting Arc 6 animated this season...

This Season 3 character design appears to be a closer reflection of the light novel character design. In fact, I personally believe that sharper designs are better than cute illustrations in light novels.
Regulas, Capella, Lye batenkaitos, Alphard.. all other Sin Archbishops names are also derived from the stars. Even the name Subaru is related to the stars in Japanese language.

I know it's been a while but it's not a spoiler since it isn't confirmed at all in the story whether or not she actually is Fortuna. It was and still is just a theory that the anime made even stronger by showing Sirius' ears more clearly. Chibi should've specified that it wasn't a spoiler though.
I've been waiting so long for this confirmation too. If we saw her eyes it would be confirmed and it is. Also Sirius' introduction in the series is the best villain intro I have ever read or seen. I was fucking mindblown. I really hope they can do this scene justice

I was like Subaru I thought I will throw up after what she did. That's how you should introduce vile villains in the stories. Other should learn this from Re zero. Ah.. Re zero is such a masterpiece.
Additionally, Sirius is seemingly an elf due to her ears resembling one, further supporting that Surius = Fortuna. But one flaw to this theory is that her voice actor and Fortuna's are different. But it could put as due to the passing time, insanity, or something, which caused her voice to slightly change. Anyways, this is a relatively old theory now and I'm glad it's been brought up again, we'll see how this goes. Elsa's facial design is indeed quite different but she won't be appearing much in s3 so it doesn't matter that much. Although the faces in s3 resemble the roundness of that of the LN, their body is the same type from the OG anime art style or, should I say, thicc, when compared to the LN as over there, the characters are quite skinny. This makes the s3 art style slightly weird because it is essentially a combination of the LN head, with the anime body. I still like it though. Subaru's ear has been upgraded tho lmao. The border lines of the characters' drawing is thinner, which makes the look cleaner tbh. But the change I like the most is the Emilia buff, if y'know what I mean 😏

I absolutely adore the redesign. First of all, the ear shading. Not to say that by itself is why it's better, but it reflects that the animators are gonna put way more effort on the characters faces and facial expressions. And from what I've seen in the trailer, I think that it's panning out to be really good. P.S. I like how you completely avoided mentioning the "Assets" upgrades.

A lot of them aren't really noticeable, but from worst to least worst, it's Elsa, Beatrice, Subaru and Reinhard. Elsa looks like a shorter 15 y/o version of her previous look and that's gonna take quite a bit away from the deliverence of her scenes for me. Subaru and Reinhard probably wouldn't be that noticeable in the anime but Beatrice would definitely be with that new airport of hers. I know how childish some characters look in almost all the artworks outside of the anime but personally, characters not looking mature is just a plain minus in a show like this with a lot of gory and psychological themes.
Generally the art style is softer and rounder, got rid of a lot of hard edges, and some characters had their eyes spaced slightly further apart I think.

Its just better and they fixed everything they did "wrong" before, to me it just feels like they start to really take re zero seriously. I can understand that changes to character designs can be jarring but how they are now is what they always where supposed to look like art style wise. It sucks for the continuity but it needed to happen in my opinion.
The new ones are fine, but I think the older ones look a little more realistic if that makes sense. I think it depends on how they animate it because Re:Zero always went into detail with facial expressions, I feel like the more moe-cartoony look might make those expressions look uncanny. Idk though, have to wait and see.
I know the VA's are different for Sirius and Fortuna but the performances for the voice are just so similar. Seriously, pull up two tabs and do a side-by-side comparison. Sirius is a little higher in pitch but that's usually expected of someone gone mad. they just sound so damn similar. As for the debate on the design changes. It is fairly obvious that they are mimicking Otsuka's style (the LN illustrator) and he tends toward a more cutesy, round look (or very sexy) which I don't have a problem with, as long as they don't copy the way Otsuka draws buff guys(they tend to be really skinny). I'm perfectly fine with it personally, I can understand if some don't like it though. its kinda funny though that everyone harps on Elsa when she's dead, we watch her get crushed by a hippo.

Tappei doesn't design it, the illustrator is some one else and is not good ,Re:zero fans really don't like this illustrations time to time. And importatnly they are trying to get closer to DESIGN, but they can't replicate then meeting it midway is bad,either design according to anime or try to fully replicate it which they can't because light novel art has a lot more details
Elsa's face being way too cute is a nitpick of mine even in the light novel, besides that the new designs look fine even if I am a fan of a grittier style
I actually love BOTH of Elsa's designs, but I can recognize that the personality exuded is drastically different. In a bubble, I love the redesign, but as to how it fits into an existing character and story... ehh, it clashes a little in my opinion.
I'm gonna be honest, I didn't notice any difference in the designs when I watched the trailer. There are plenty of anime with far more drastic changes than this. Even in this video I had to look really close to figure out an significant differences.
Because S1 made her look like she had Ram size boobs for most of the time. Then they fixed that issue in 2018 with Frozen Bond and memory snow where her boobs are much bigger, just go to last scene where Emilia is in her date outfit and her boobs are MUCH bigger because that is more fit to her canon. Then Season 2 came out, but the production was god awful (even though WF has huge passion), Emilia had same size as 2018 one, then it got weird with covering her up. Then we have season 3 where basically same size, its her actual canon size except for one scene where they messed up at her fight scene.
About Elsa's design. I don't see why people care that much. This is a minor LN spoiler, though it's not too unpredictable: . . . . She's definitely dead. She should only appear in flashbacks, and unless I'm misremembering tremendously, she shouldn't appear in season 3 at all. I don't know why she even has a design. Are they adapting Corridor of Memories? Like, even then she should only be in like 1 flashback.
Everçy design is just closest to the light novel's, but rounding the faces doesn't always work well. Elsa with a sharp face was just a perfect fit for her fighting style , it's just weird to see her like this. I mean come on she's just a ducking milf with this design, let's tell the terms.
Subaru's design sticks out like sore thumb. I watched all of the S3 trailers and the inconsistency with his design is wild: in one shot he looks like a toddler, in the other - like S1 design(which I'm more fond of). Other than that characters got small and quite good changes with more detail.
The only thing I can complain about here are Subaru's and Reinhard's eyes not being as sharp as they used to be.

i dont like that they rounded out garfiel and subaru's sharp eyes, but overall i think these designs look more polished and i am happy that we are getting rid of the under eye line. ive never been a fan of that in anime

not saying i want spoilers, just thinking to myself, but i thought elsa is supposed to be dead unless the design is for when she's brought up in flashbacks or something(still in middle of arc 4 WN), just wasn't expecting her to be brought up again like they did after arc 1

Its just better and they fixed everything they did "wrong" before, to me it just feels like they start to really take re zero seriously. I can understand that changes to character designs can be jarring but how they are now is what they always where supposed to look like art style wise. It sucks for the continuity but it needed to happen in my opinion.

The new ones are fine, but I think the older ones look a little more realistic if that makes sense.
I think it depends on how they animate it because Re:Zero always went into detail with facial expressions, I feel like the more moe-cartoony look might make those expressions look uncanny. Idk though, have to wait and see.
I know the VA's are different for Sirius and Fortuna but the performances for the voice are just so similar. Seriously, pull up two tabs and do a side-by-side comparison. Sirius is a little higher in pitch but that's usually expected of someone gone mad. they just sound so damn similar.
As for the debate on the design changes. It is fairly obvious that they are mimicking Otsuka's style (the LN illustrator) and he tends toward a more cutesy, round look (or very sexy) which I don't have a problem with, as long as they don't copy the way Otsuka draws buff guys(they tend to be really skinny). I'm perfectly fine with it personally, I can understand if some don't like it though. its kinda funny though that everyone harps on Elsa when she's dead, we watch her get crushed by a hippo.

No real fan cares about the "censorship". Otsuka is a weirdo who drew "the most beautiful woman in the world" as a loli. Then he published on twitter an ecchi illustration that showed her "Pandora's Box" which was so creepy that even japanese otakus demanded him to sensor it immediately.

I don’t know man, I wouldn’t say the faces are rounder but rather wider, and it’s really obvious when comparing the faces side by side. Personally, I still prefer the art direction in S2 more over S3.
I agree the Art is a bit less optimal. But, I think the most important thing is that we're getting more of our favorite story animated.

I feel the opposite. It's strange that there has been a time skip and Subaru, Petra, and Frederica look younger than before. Wilhelm looking softer makes a lot more sense with his character development in season 1.

Honestly i dont mind all the changes, if they all are closer to what Teppei had them designed as, then im fine with it.
Tappei doesn't design it, the illustrator is some one else and is not good ,Re:zero fans really don't like this illustrations time to time.
And importatnly they are trying to get closer to DESIGN, but they can't replicate then meeting it midway is bad,either design according to anime or try to fully replicate it which they can't because light novel art has a lot more details
Elsa's face being way too cute is a nitpick of mine even in the light novel, besides that the new designs look fine even if I am a fan of a grittier style

I always find the original artstyle very unique and I love it.
I actually love BOTH of Elsa's designs, but I can recognize that the personality exuded is drastically different.
In a bubble, I love the redesign, but as to how it fits into an existing character and story... ehh, it clashes a little in my opinion.
I'm gonna be honest, I didn't notice any difference in the designs when I watched the trailer. There are plenty of anime with far more drastic changes than this. Even in this video I had to look really close to figure out an significant differences.

I'm still confused with the redesign for emilia and her assets
Because S1 made her look like she had Ram size boobs for most of the time.
Then they fixed that issue in 2018 with Frozen Bond and memory snow where her boobs are much bigger, just go to last scene where Emilia is in her date outfit and her boobs are MUCH bigger because that is more fit to her canon.
Then Season 2 came out, but the production was god awful (even though WF has huge passion), Emilia had same size as 2018 one, then it got weird with covering her up.
Then we have season 3 where basically same size, its her actual canon size except for one scene where they messed up at her fight scene.
I like new designs a lot 🤗

She's definitely dead. She should only appear in flashbacks, and unless I'm misremembering tremendously, she shouldn't appear in season 3 at all. I don't know why she even has a design. Are they adapting Corridor of Memories? Like, even then she should only be in like 1 flashback.

Everçy design is just closest to the light novel's, but rounding the faces doesn't always work well. Elsa with a sharp face was just a perfect fit for her fighting style , it's just weird to see her like this. I mean come on she's just a ducking milf with this design, let's tell the terms.
Subaru's design sticks out like sore thumb. I watched all of the S3 trailers and the inconsistency with his design is wild: in one shot he looks like a toddler, in the other - like S1 design(which I'm more fond of). Other than that characters got small and quite good changes with more detail.
