Unfortunately oelcat designs their Pathfinder games with saves coming in mind. Because it's not possible for you to know what's coming, and what spells you are going to need. So you are constantly tasked to save and reload
I watched your POE guide a month ago and having fun with the game until now. Can't wait to learn about POE2 and all games including this one! For now, I will put this to my playlist.
It's actually a game that I've been meaning to play. I started it a long time ago but only played like 1 hour of it. Potential project for the channel in the future :D
I find build guides useful in order too see what's possible. The biggest problem I still have with the Pathfinder games, even as an experienced CRPG player, is the overwhelming about of special abilities, spells etc.. and it's so much worse in WotR where you have the mythic abilities and their synergies with regular abilities to contend with. So what I've done here and there is look at a build from a guide that is well explained (there are some of those around), get to understanding how it works, and then modify it to suit my preferences and my party. That way I see the important abilities that contribute to a character doing what they do well, without having to read through hundreds of feat and spell descriptions beforehand and consider the thousands of ways they might synergize. And if I find something I like that isn't in the build, I know what I can sacrifice and what not. Also, yes, manual buffing gets old fast, especially if you play on higher difficulties where stacked buffs are a necessity. I think the necessity of excessive buffing is one of the main weak points of the Pathfinder games, mechanics-wise. And regarding Last Azlanti, you might say it's the most authentic way to play any rpg since after all, there is no in-world equivalent of "load savegame", but I would disagree, if succeeding in a Last Azlanti run depends on knowing about the enemies in advance, like it certainly does at least on any difficulty above "easy" in the Pathfinder games. And since the only reason for me to ever play Last Azlanti would be such authenticity, rather than looking for a gameplay challenge, I'll probably never do it.
The amount of potential picks for building your character can indeed become very overwhelming, and as you said very well, is even more so the case for WotR. And I will also add and agree with you that I see no problem with getting some ideas from existing guides, as long as they do a nice job of at least explaining how the build is supposed to work and why they pick what they do. My main concern is with those that are pretty much just a table of thingToPick/Level and then explain nothing. The excessive buffing required in this game is indeed one of its weak points. There is some satisfaction to be had from being able to obtain the nice buffs, stack your bonuses sky high and plough through everything (at least for me :p) but I definitely prefer a different approach such as the one taken in Pillars of Eternity or Rogue Trader, especially since you can get so powerfully buffed in pathfinder that if you do it well, the gameplay kind of becomes a buff up and charge in to murder everything and anything. Regarding Last Azlanti, I'm not sure I would call it the most "authentic" way of playing, if I used that word in the review that's my bad. For me, the "authentic" way is the good old classic way of exploring the game, trial and error, seeing what works and what doesn't through the reliable quick-save/quick-load approach. Especially in a game such as this where any little mistake may just mess you up out of nowhere. I do think Last Azlanti provides a feeling of excitement though that is very hard to replace once you start doing it. That's both a blessing and a curse ahah but after a while of playing Last Azlanti, I just no longer enjoy a non-LastAzlanti approach as I just start feeling like I'm unconsciously playing fast and loose and I don't end up getting much satisfaction from the achievements I get at that point. Naturally this is a very personal thing and it's not something I would recommend easily to anyone, especially in Pathfinder.
@@CoredumpedGaming With "authentic" (and no, you didn't use the term) I mean in the sense of being...well, life-like rather than game-like. If you are this character in this world confronting these events, you don't get to repeat them if the outcome doesn't suit you, so loading a saved game is less authentic than not doing it. In addition, the whole story will also not repeat itself for you so that you can learn about the enemies and use that knowledge later, so any playthrough after the first is less authentic than the first. From this perspective the most authentic playthrough is a blind Last Azlanti run. I don't know anyone who actually does that though. Most of us balance "life-like" and "game-like" in a less one-sided way.
Ah, got it. I actually have seen some people going for this style of the game blind in last azlanti mode (ironman, hardcore, etc) which I just find to be insane lol it would have to be a very finely tuned experience without surprises for that to be remotely doable, which pathfinder most certainly is not. I certainly don't do that with new games :p I'm still upset at my PotD PoE2 run that was almost deathless except for that weird fight in the DLC where all my characters were swapped for game monsters :/ Just imagine if that playthrough would have been on ironman mode... I would quit games for a while xD
You are so correct about blindly following a character guide. After I beat the game on normal and swapped to harder difficulty and got spanked I looked up character guides and saw all the shatter defenses combos and took them without knowing why and thinking I was doing something incorrectly. However once I actually got the combos working it was amazing. I do wish character builds would spend more time telling why things work.
Yep, I do think a lot of guides are mostly just copy pasted from each other and don't explain everything. I think if a guide is done it would be important to explain the role of such a build/character in the party, adds a lot more value than just showing a spreadsheet of feats per level
Note that Shatter Defenses was implemented incorrectly in this game and in WOTR, making it brokenly good. A few months ago, they fixed WOTR to make the feat work exactly as it does in tabletop.
@@maxscherzer9521 Oh I haven't played through lately so I only got to experience the OP version apparently. I'll have to try again on the new DLC when I get around to it.
Yep, I always found it a bit odd the way the game applied the benefits of shatter defenses given the description of the skill. I'm happy they finally got around to fixing it.
Agreed with you that Last Azlanti is the more fun way to play. Not only because you need to take combat seriously, but also because choices and skill checks throughout the game have weight, it's not just a reload fest whenever you get less than a perfect result. HOWEVER I wish there was a "Soft Azlanti" option that is less punishing. For example, if the main character dies, it should revert you back to the save at the start of the act. Severely punishing, but not invalidating the entire run. I also found there were a couple places in the game where you have a special quest with just the main character and a companion. If the companion dies, the entire game is over. No option to raise dead, no option to fail the companion quest and continue the run without him. As long as this is in the game, I won't use companions past act 1, except as advisors.
Agreed, especially when it comes to that part about the companions in their quests. If I didn't mention this in the review I should have because it's really bad especially for last azlanti. I learned that the hard way when I lost a run to Tristian's quest lol I laugh about it now, but I was definitely not happy at the time :p
I just started playing on normal. It’s my first crpg 😅 saw the mythic path stuff on reviews of WOTR and wanted to start on PFK Hasn’t been too challenging although I started exploring a little too soon and got wrecked by a werewolf. Fangberry wasn’t bad just a bit fiddly.
I actually prefer this setting over Wrath of the righteous setting. I do enjoy the gothic heaven and hell theme, but High fantasy is where my favorite setting lies. But it's undeniable how much more class building you get in Wrath of the righteous, not to mention just more classes all together
Agreed. WotR brings a lot that improves upon what Kingmaker had, that is undeniable. A lot more classes and subclasses, feats, spells, mounted combat... as well as a large number of quality of life features that I would have loved to have in this game. For me though, it's mostly the setting and the story that pulls me more towards Kingmaker as I think WotR suffers a bit from just being so insanely heavy on demon lore and demon enemies (I know it makes sense given the story, but still).
Bread and D&D :D I might steal this lol I think WotR suffers a bit from being very demon heavy where kingmaker is more pleasant looking and has more variety which I personally prefer. Though WotR also has some pretty amazing additions such as the mythic progression and a lot of QoL features
So i had an issue where i missed the tiefling side quest until i was like level 9, then suddenly had not 1 but 2 builds to put together by hand. It was too much and i just went for a build guide.
Yeah, I suffer from this as well lol. I normally go for that quest a bit late as the quest can be very difficult early depending on your main character, since your party doesn't join you. And then you get not 1, but 2 kineticists to level quite a few times, and especially with how much stuff there is to read and learn about those classes... I normally only bother to level 1 of the sisters xD it's too much work
Witcher 3 is one of those games I wish I could erase my memory to play again for the first time. In my opinion, a game that changed RPGs and my perception of RPGs for ever. Well, I guess my picture is kind of a hint that I like the game :p
@@CoredumpedGaming Yeah, it's amazing so far. I also deliberately avoided every spoilers through all these years, so I don' t know anything about the story. I played tons of rpg-s so far since ~1998, and the Witcher 3 is on the top somewhere.
I’m a bit of a younger player so my first crpg was kingmaker. It was free on epic games and I wanted to play a simple rpg at the time. Boy was I wrong. My first playthrough I kept getting destroyed by a random encounter at the start of act 2, and my last save was so long ago I quit the game for a little bit before starting a new run. But I started a new game and eventually beat it, though I needed a guide to get through the last dungeon, I spent too long trying to figure it out and gave up. After Kingmaker I went backwards and played pillars, dragon age origins, baldurs gate, iwd, etc and honestly the worst part about the pathfinder games that prevents me from replaying is the prebuffing and kingdom/crusade management, which are so absurdly time consuming relative to the main gameplay.
Pathfinder and "simple RPG" don't mix well together :D congratulations though on having the perseverance to get through it. And have no shame about looking up a guide for the last dungeon, that place is horrible lol One thing I can recommend for the pathfinder games is auto buff mods. I cannot play without them at this point since as you said, it is just way too annoying and time consuming having to buff those insane amounts of buffs very frequently. I use these mods in both my kingmaker and WotR playthroughs in case you want to see them in action. They make playing the game a whole lot easier!
Hum, I think I'll make a video on this as I've had several questions regarding this and I only really mention it in the middle of the playthrough videos. It is called "PathfinderAutoBuff" you can find it on nexus - www.nexusmods.com/pathfinderkingmaker/mods/231
Lol I shall take this as compliment :p but in reality I really meant what I said. I know there are going to be a lot of people with a lot more optimized and min maxed builds and stuff for the games and may know a lot of really powerful tactics or secrets, whereas I tend to go a more "normal" approach I guess? It works though so I am happy :D
My first "last azlanti" run was killed by a Count Shimmerglow critical max damage searing light. Since that happened I usually avoid the "Lost Child" quest xD
Last azlanti is one of the best way for players to never again forget certain enemies in the game :p I also always respect that fight quite a lot as I have lost people there before, even if I think it didn't end a run thankfully.
What i personally don't like about Kingmaker (and WotR too) are the icons. Especially the scrolls icons. For example, the healing spell scrolls. What is that? Why? Why not just draw classic red cross or something more readible than those... sticks? Or whatever. Even the old Baldur's Gate didn't have this problem.
Ahah, you know what, I never really gave that much thought. I kind of got used to them and just went with it. I will say though that there are some icons which can get pretty confusing at times, especially when you start having a lot of scrolls in your inventory.
This game has a ton of viable builds, especially if you're playin core and below, which is the closest to actual tabletop pathfinder numerical values, anyway. Too bad building for opportunity attacks with a mostly melee party is the clear cut best way to destroy all content.
Oh, completely agree. Core and below is where people should play if they just want to have fun and not bother with optimized builds and parties. As for the opportunity attacks, yeah, at least it is the most efficient way I've found. High critical range weapons, bunch of stacked AoO feats and shred. If playing on turn based, a character such as my MC can also melt entire rooms, but most of the time it's not required since the martials do the job.
@@CoredumpedGamingVery true. That's why I find Wrath of the Righteous much better for replayability. The mythical paths change most of the mechanics and the story progression, great addition. Although the same opportunity attack stacking style still rules. Trickster mythic path character can get to 10/20 critical range themselves, and get every companion down to 15/20 or so😂
The mythic paths, the items, the new classes and spells naturally add a LOT to the replayability, which is excellent :D But yeah, crit builds are still very much a thing and with the trickster path it goes into insanity level :p
There's quite a few ways to really get powerful in this game. Like a reach weapon with cleave, or cornugen smash, etc.. Archers built with pure archery feats absolutely destroy single targets.. The problem with melee heavy parties, (which I lean towards) is Fey Illusions and Enchantments.. Confuse can be a nightmare, when cast on a well built, high damage melee character, and they go through your party like butter Pets are probably the best way to abuse this game. Edit: WotR really does add a TON of new classes, and ways to play.. I prefer the Kingmaker setting personally, but WotR is undeniably more fun
Oh you're not wrong at all lol confusion is one of my most hated and feared spells for that reason alone. I've had playthroughs in the past that were lost to a confusion landing on nok-nok and even though my party was pretty sturdy against the enemies, nok-nok just shredded several of my characters lol Need to have your finger on the trigger for that unbreakable heart if you expect confusion :p
The metagaming knowledge is mostly relevant if you are playing on the higher difficulties or attempting Last Azlanti, it's not that much of a concern if doing a more "normal" playthrough, though I agree that there are certain situations that if the player doesn't know what's coming, can lead to a lot of frustration, such as those forced "play alone in the party" situations, which I would prefer they did not exist. As for the feats - now this is a more common issue. Once you get accustomed to which feats work the best, you start shying away from many others that probably only very rarely see play because they exist in the tabletop version but are just not very adequate for the game. I suppose it is part of the nature of having such a complex system, it does take some getting used to for sure. A very interesting example of this is in the sequel, Wrath of the Righteous, when I played it for the first time I was preparing my control spellcaster to make very good use of Stinking Cloud to then only later realize that most enemies in the game were immune to it :/ (this was before the Corruptor mythic feat existed)
For me best classic rpgs Pillars of Eternity and Patfinder KM , they are better than Baldursgate(didnt play third yet) Newerwinter Nights and Icewinddale
Definitely one of the greats in my book as well. Baldur's Gate has a special place in my heart and will not easily be dethroned eheh but I can see myself more easily recommending Pillars of Eternity to new players than any of the others mentioned, I think it's more accessible.
If you've played Pathfinder in kingmaker in Wrath of the righteous, you can just go ahead and Skip Baldur's Gate 3. That game is so shallow and boring.. I gave up at act 2. If you can stomach turn-based combat, Wasteland 2 and 3 are both pretty good for that Fallout type post-apocalyptic setting. I prefer Real Time with Paul way more, but I thoroughly enjoyed Wasteland 2
I need to find the time and motivation for wasteland 2 at some point. I'm a big fan of the original Fallout games so I felt some inspiration from them in wasteland 2 but at the same time the game never pulled me in too much. I need to give it another go.

BYE!!!!!!!!!
Happy to hear friend :D Enjoy!
Have you played Tyranny? I quite enjoyed that one and I don't see it come up too often.
It's actually a game that I've been meaning to play. I started it a long time ago but only played like 1 hour of it. Potential project for the channel in the future :D
It's the best in story and atmosphere. Hands down
@@CoredumpedGaming Please!! It's a great game. Amazing experience. Short game and highly replayable.
Going into the list of upcoming projects :D
@@CoredumpedGaming wasteland 3 as well.. 😊
It’s my first crpg 😅 saw the mythic path stuff on reviews of WOTR and wanted to start on PFK
Hasn’t been too challenging although I started exploring a little too soon and got wrecked by a werewolf. Fangberry wasn’t bad just a bit fiddly.
I think you made the correct choice my friend :D you can always adjust the difficulty at any time if you find the game to be too easy/hard
I loved PF KM and completed it 3 times. I like the story and world building more than WotR, it is more personal and grounded (also Nyrissa
Bread and D&D :D I might steal this lol
I think WotR suffers a bit from being very demon heavy where kingmaker is more pleasant looking and has more variety which I personally prefer. Though WotR also has some pretty amazing additions such as the mythic progression and a lot of QoL features
Arcane agent, and Werglia have the best class build channels for this game
So i had an issue where i missed the tiefling side quest until i was like level 9, then suddenly had not 1 but 2 builds to put together by hand. It was too much and i just went for a build guide.
Yeah, I suffer from this as well lol. I normally go for that quest a bit late as the quest can be very difficult early depending on your main character, since your party doesn't join you. And then you get not 1, but 2 kineticists to level quite a few times, and especially with how much stuff there is to read and learn about those classes... I normally only bother to level 1 of the sisters xD it's too much work
Just in time :) I'm finishing Witcher3 soon, and the two pathfinder games are coming up next.
And have no shame about looking up a guide for the last dungeon, that place is horrible lol
One thing I can recommend for the pathfinder games is auto buff mods. I cannot play without them at this point since as you said, it is just way too annoying and time consuming having to buff those insane amounts of buffs very frequently. I use these mods in both my kingmaker and WotR playthroughs in case you want to see them in action. They make playing the game a whole lot easier!
Whats the name of the buff mod you are using?
Hum, I think I'll make a video on this as I've had several questions regarding this and I only really mention it in the middle of the playthrough videos.
It is called "PathfinderAutoBuff" you can find it on nexus - www.nexusmods.com/pathfinderkingmaker/mods/231
30:45 Also Coredumped: Last Azlanti unfair both Kingmaker and WotR, Grim Darkness unfair, Triple crown, Honor mode clears ect. 😂
@@CoredumpedGaming yes its a compliment
Character build is both the strongest points and biggest barrier of pathfinder 😂
Very very true
Trickster mythic path character can get to 10/20 critical range themselves, and get every companion down to 15/20 or so😂
The mythic paths, the items, the new classes and spells naturally add a LOT to the replayability, which is excellent :D
But yeah, crit builds are still very much a thing and with the trickster path it goes into insanity level :p
Confuse can be a nightmare, when cast on a well built, high damage melee character, and they go through your party like butter
Pets are probably the best way to abuse this game.
Edit: WotR really does add a TON of new classes, and ways to play.. I prefer the Kingmaker setting personally, but WotR is undeniably more fun
Oh you're not wrong at all lol confusion is one of my most hated and feared spells for that reason alone. I've had playthroughs in the past that were lost to a confusion landing on nok-nok and even though my party was pretty sturdy against the enemies, nok-nok just shredded several of my characters lol
Need to have your finger on the trigger for that unbreakable heart if you expect confusion :p
Requiring metagaming to conquer combat scenarios and knowing whether or not a feat will ever be worthwhile is not a selling point.
You WON'T miss BG3. Too many cinematics, like you're watching a movie, instead of in a game. Has gay sex in the game.
