Bodycam DUI Arrest - Drunk 24-Year-Old Hits a Tree and Blames it on Her Tire

- On May 3, 2024, Roswell Police Officers were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident. Officer Watkins made contact with the 24-year-old driver of the Dodge Charger. The vehicle had significant damage from striking a tree and curb. The woman admitted to consuming a cider at a local brewery. She was asked to perform standardized field sobriety tests and at the conclusion, she was arrested for DUI. At the Roswell police station, she submitted to an evidential breath test and the result was 0.17%. She was charged with aggravated driving while under the influence and for failure to maintain lanes. Her case is still open and all suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
That tree had no right to jump out on her like that, especially at night and when her vision was impaired through alcohol....

The huge difference I see today compared to when I was growing up (Gen X born in 69')... No way in hell would our parents have bailed us out. We wouldn't want them to even find out if we could help it, let alone call them. My parents told us, "If you ever do something stupid enough to get yourself arrested, don't bother calling, your happy ass can sit there". Everyone I knew got some version of the same message from their parents. I raised 2 millenials the same way. I can't understand these parents that are so eager to pick up/bail out their adult children. Good god, no wonder so many grown ass people don't know how to take responsibility or accountability for their actions anymore. Parents who swoop in to rescue/protect their children when they've done something wrong are actually being selfish. It's REALLY hard/painful as a parent having to see your child suffering consequences, but rescueing/protecting them is mostly to ease your own discomfort and doesn't do them ANY favors... Quite the contrary.
Baby Boomer here- 1964. I know my parents would have made me sit in jail. And just the look of disappointment on their faces would have been the worst punishment ever. I just wonder what is this country going to be like in 50 years. It’s really scary and I’m kind of glad I won’t be here.
I think we were more honest and took responsibility but also DUI didn’t cost you much back in the 60-70’s. You didn’t hear about people being arrested for it.

I'm a few years younger than you [boomer] and feel the same way, but to be fair to the dad in this case, we should note he behaved impeccably with the officers on the scene and didn't 'baby' his idiot adult drunk-driving daughter. The shame is *all* on her for calling him in the first place.
My mother was the worst. If I ever called her when I was in trouble, she didn't help.. but then if something happened and I didn't call her, it would be "Why didn't you call me?" Good ol' baby boomer logic there.

He isn’t going to let her rot in jail is he especially when part of the process is taking them back to the office to take a breath test & then allowing the offender the opportunity to post bail. Him bailing his daughter out is in no way saying it’s ok for her to drink drive ffs. She is an adult and she made adult choices, he dad bailing her out doesn’t change the Karen.

Correction… it WAS a company car. She just lost her job too because she won’t be able to drive her company car without a license. I saw a guy a my last company lose over $150,000 a year because he stopped and took a nap on the side of the interstate after taking clients out for a night of drinking. It’s not worth it.

I use to have a job, and part of my responsibility was making sure the registrations and insurance info were neatly placed in the glove box. It should be right there at the ready. Since it wasn't their car, it was expected that they would treat it like a company car. And people were fired for getting too many tickets and forget about a DWI

Honest question - why do officers try to avoid giving specific ways they saw the suspect not do well on Field Sobriety tests? She could have been told how she failed to count out loud for instance....

My guess is because one aspect of the test is the suspects ability to pay attention and follow and remember the instructions. Also I would think if you started telling drunk suspects what they failed at they'd waste time trying to argue if the could do it again.

Her questions about the tests were absolutely valid and she has the right to know which items she performed poorly on. The cop did not answer her question what so ever. His responses were idiotic. He really seems like a complete moron. All he had to do was say something like "you missed several steps in the walk and turn, you had trouble walking in a straight line, etc," Even though the tests are not "pass and fail" there absolutely ARE indicators that someone is impaired and the cop should not only know that but he able to communicate this. This cop needs to be trained in basic communication

Also, the officer answered her question a dozen times, and then she tells her dad he wouldn't answer her. So gross. I guess alcohol makes drunk drivers forget that body cams exist, and also blurs their vision so they don't see the body cam right on the officer's chest...just like how she didn't see the tree that jumped right out in front of her.
Not sure why they just don't tell her the indicators they found that she failed. Probably for legal reasons.
