Messed up a bit on the math. Whoops! Atari was introduced in 1977 at $199, which would be $840 after inflation today. The Colecovision was introduced in 1982 at $199, which would be $528 after inflation The Atari 2600 at launch was more expensive than the PS3 was at launch (for the original 60GB model, that is)!
That commercial at 5:16 has a lie in it. They showed the Atari 2600 version of Pac-Man but claimed it was the Colecovision version. The video pointed out that it was actually the 2600 version of Pac-Man being played on the Colecovision expansion module. The Commercial may have been misleading to someone who didn't know the difference.

Also, neither the Colecovision nor the NES had the full Donkey Kong game, as both were missing the pie stages. The NES version that came out in the US in 1986 was actually a launch release for the Famicom in 1983, less than a year after the Colecovision version was released. Fun fact: Until the Famicom was released, Coleco had exclusive rights to the home version of Donkey Kong. They made the 2600 version so bad in order to make the Colecovision look that much better.
That's really interesting. I never made it past the 2nd "1st level" so I guess I was way away from noticing. :(. I love how much you know about gaming history. It is always awesome to remember the past and not just look to the future!
Freakin amazing job on this 2nd video Crump!!! I like how you picked right up from the 1st one and went on to explain the details in such depth! There is SO much I didn't know about ColecoVision and Atari...very informative and fun to watch!
Great video, but a fairly large mis-representation. That "Colecovison" version of pac-man is actually a much more recent home brew. Back in the actual day of those systems, there was indeed no version of pac-man.
not actually a home-brew, but an un-released version from Atarisoft which was later was acquired as a prototype and various groups made cartridge versions released.
Uhhhh, did no one notice the math on the price comparison between Coleco and the Atari 2600 is off by, like...a lot?!? In 1982, the Coleco retailed for $199. That's $517 in 2019 dollars. Not $835. Not to pick on a really good video here, but that's an embarrassing mistake.
Whoa. Good call. Didn’t even notice that typo. Sorry about that flub. We appreciate you calling it a good video otherwise. Thanks a bunch for watching.
Pop Culture History love what you guys do. Im a History major with a serious appreciation for what the video game industry did to and for history. Thanks again for your contributions!

my favorite game system growing up.....happy and sad when watching this
Great video! As someone who grew up with Colecovision, I can assure you there was no version of Pac-Man made for the system.
Thanks for the compliment! That is a bummer about Pac-Man. The first I played was on the Atari. The pellets were rectangles. :p

Before the time of the internet, I wonder how much of that was being done since it was more difficult for consumers to fact check. Great eye!
Love retro gaming history, grate gob! Keep them coming.

Thanks for the kind words. We worked pretty hard on both of them, so it is nice to know that the hard work paid off!
There's my C64! Nice job--soooo many memories (rf switches?!) Great job on covering the rise and fall of this company. Surprisingly interesting stuff!
Thanks for the compliments and for watching. I learned a lot in the course of the research for it as well!
19:49 Lori Loughlin starts asking "is that legal?" Lol.

Art Guglielmo Ah, great call! I never had a ColecoVision as a kiddo, so I had thought that was the version for it. Awesome bit of trivia right there.
Is that legal? Wow...talk about foreshadowing there Lori Laughlin 🤦🤣🤷♂️

So coleco didn't have any exclusives? Sad
