There’s just something about parallax 2 that never fails to disappoint. One of my favorites of all time.
During the Q&A at their show in Detroit, every member of the band said their favorite album ("not including Colors II *wink wink*") is Parallax 2. I agree.
Yall sleeping on Hypersleep Dialogues eh? UNFORGIVABLE!! But yeah Parrallax 2 is the greatest album ever composed except for MAYBE Quiet World by Native Construct.
I wish that they would re-mix and master Parallax II. Tommy's growls were a bit muffled in the mix, unlike Coma Ecleptic onwards.

Love seeing everyone's opinion on what their best albums are. IMO, there's no wrong opinion, it speaks volumes to how consistently amazing BTBAM is.

Exactly how I feel. They’re all amazing. My favorite album to listen to is Coma but I’m a pure mosh fiend so I love Obfuscation live, parralax 2 tour that I just saw. Colors of course, Alaska. It’s all great man. No way I’d rank a single album after their first below B and then colors and everything after is a masterpiece to me.
"Colors" is my personal fav, but "Coma Ecliptic" is a very close second. Seeing BTBAM play the whole thing live was a wild experience.

Same! It’s my favorite album too. I can acknowledge that its not as focused and a bit over indulgent, but it’s their most fun I think.

Glad to see Silent Circus up so high. I swear that album is sooo overlooked. That whole middle section: Mordecai through Ad a Dglgmut is one of my favorite moments in music. Also Lost Perfection is such a powerful intro and it's really cool how the lyrics of the songs tie to Prequel to the Sequel. I have TGM, Parallax (1&2), and Colors 1 as my top 3 (in any order really). Colors 2 is amazing!
C TIER TGMD? PITCHFORKS AND TORCHES LADIIIIIIIIIES AND GENTLEMEEEEEEN. It took me some time to get into it, but TGMD was the 2nd album I got into after colors, and I still love it. I love Mirrors, obfscusation (however tf you spell that is solid), actually as im writing this up I realize that I love all the tracks in it. Swim to the moon will always be special for me, though.

I would also consider it their weakest one. To me it always sounded like Colors B-Sides material and everytime I listen to that record I am bored pretty quickly. I think C seems fair…
They've easily gone 5 incredible albums in a row imo, monumental task for any artist. Run could either go from Alaska to Parallax 2, or Colors to Coma for me. My favorite overall is Parallax 1 and 2 but TGM is very close.

I absolutely hate the silent circus and self titled. But my first album was colors
I've come around HARD on Colors 2 since it dropped. After I got over my initial sadness that it didnt' really feel like the first colors, and that it was instead a new album in this new BTBAM (coma ecliptic onwards) style, it started to really resonate with me. It is prog metal perfected and has become one of if not my favorite albums.
Best BTBAM album for me for sure, it's so refined and perfect in every way.
On first listen it felt pretty average, 2nd and 3rd listen it became my most played album. I loved the common themes that repeat throughout the album, and how If you just sit there and listen, you will start to notice multiple motifs
P1 is my fav. But Alaska, Colors, TDM, P2 and Colors II all hold the same spot in my mind. Then silent circus, coma ecliptic and self titled with automata at the very bottom. Regardless though, i know all of their music by heart, im a fan boy all day, they are my all time favorite band, i always make sure to go to at least two shows each US tour. I have tab books, cds, dvds, vinyls, posters, tommys newest vinyl, hoodies, tshirts; dudes are the reason i pick up my guitar and drum sticks apart from my own personal love of music. Greatest band in the world.
I happened to buy "Colors" at an HMV quite blindly when I was a teen - not having any idea of this album vs all their albums - just looked like an interesting album artwork - listened to it in my car and got absolutely blown away
S/T is my favorite album of all time and The Silent Circus is right behind. Ask me another day and I'll switch the albums. Their first 2 were so good.
Mirrors and Swim To The Moon are some of my favorite songs period. I personally feel like The Great Misdirect is disgustingly underrated, and I honestly really think Parallax 2 is generally overrated, but I still really love the album.
TGM to me has the two high points at the beginning and end so I can definitely see why people might not like it as much, the rest of the album gets kinda outshined right off the bat for most people with Obfuscation, which I don't really care for. I much prefer the softer Desert of Song but, again, my favorite songs off the album are the opener and closer.
Parallax 2 is overall fantastic, again, if a bit overrated. Telos is easily my favorite track off the album but most people will know Extremeophile which, I get, but it's definitely not the best off the album in my humble opinion.
If I were to compare the two obv Parallax would beat TGM, but it's just unfair in my opinion to compare the two because they're trying to do different things. That's like comparing Master of Puppets to SGT. Peppers, it just makes zero sense.
Colours is and will always be my favorite album. It might be one of my favorite albums of all time, if not *the* favorite I love it so much. It is literally perfect, and I cannot listen to one track without listening to the rest of the album. I don't think I have ever preferred any of the albums over it.
Also Coma imo is also underrated, but it's not exactly their best work. TGM is still better than it imo.
I think Swim to the Moon is their best song.
I’ve been loving the redux versions of older tier lists lately. Your newer style definitely makes tier lists some of the most engaging and fun content on the channel. I also really love the Bandcamp deep dives.

Maybe if you see em perform it live, your opinion on Great Misdirect will shift? Just a thought considering they're doing that during the current tour.

Also while I love some tunes of the self titled (Aspriations, Naked by the Computer) You could tell it was a band that wanted to get way more proggy but knew the hardcore scene wouldn't have it, and they were right. When the finally got the balls and made Colors all the metalcore kids thought it was joke. But people who just love music heard it and knew it was an instant masterpiece. You are right, the Silent Circus is great, but they were still just "fitting in" with the scene.
When colors 2 came out, that was my first BTBAM album and it shook my world.

Yeah this is one of those bands for sure.
I just combine Parrallax 1 and 2 in any list because they're both absolute perfection in my opinion. Specular Reflection has probably the coolest intro to any song ever.
great stuff btbam so cool. I have the autographed cd silent circus! I have listened it it 400k times, the rest of the cds i have, but they're just in the binder, they just don't hit me emotionally.

I overlooked this band forever because I heard their softer stuff first, but I finally listened to their earlier albums like The Silent Circus and Alaska and it hooked me. This band is way heavier than I thought and even their vocals are heavier on those earlier albums. I just started my journey through their catalogue and I’m loving it so far.

i feel like people who dont appreciate their self titled and silent circus werent around when they were relevant and came into the band much deeper into their discography and gave their early work a quick glance over, not appreciating it for what it was at the time. i remember seeing them at a house show performing more of myself to kill in early 00's and even then i could realize the talent. their first 3 albums will always be some of my favorites of the metal genre

I love Coma Ecliptic. Plenty of great tracks but Famine Wolf is one of my top tracks they’ve ever done. Agree wholeheartedly on Ants of the Sky also!

I loved hearing you talk about buying Silent Circus. My guitarist showed me Mordaci and I was blown away so I bought the album by walking in the CD shop just like you did although I made a B line towards it. I wish I had just randomly picked it up but this is cool too. And it was almost too heavy for me at the time but again, just. as you said, I was drawn to the intro and it perplexed me more than anything and I would play it while playing NES emulators like Megaman and Double Dragon. I fell in love with the whole album and it is still by far my fav BTBAM album and one of my fav albums in general. I love every song, even the slower movement in the middle. Thank you Silent Circus for pushing me more into extreme music and thank you for the killer channel. I watch all your stuff.

Dude you are very correct about TGM, The officially BTBAM forum when TGM came out all the fans were super up in arms. It was a horrible album! "They put a fucking horse neighing it!" I remember reading all this and thinking you are all completely wrong. After talking to lots of people on either side of the fence. I find that people who are better at extremely active listening love TGM. It is so notey you really have to give it your full attention where a lot of their albums give you some room to breath. They struck gold with Parallax 2 though they figured out how to do their super notey sections (Solo in Extremeophile Elite would have fit in perfectly on TGM) followed up by some very groove heavy breakdowns (The end of Telos which was the answer of what would happen if Colors and Alaska had a child). Also the end of Telos is the perfect example of this. While other albums have supplanted TGM for me one of their best others would not have been as good if they didn't go experiment down that very notey, blazing and confusing beautifulness that is TGM. Also, if they just did another Colors it would have been a huge misstep, so they took the risk and completely changed their sound again. Also Colors 2 is the perfect BTBAM album as of 2022
I think Memory Palace into Option Oblivion and into the album ender is one of my favorite songs they've ever done, and I'm a Colors/Parallax2 guy.
I agree with your tier list for the most part. I never used to like The Great Misdirect, probably because I remember feeling "let down" when it was first released, especially given how amazing Colors and Alaska were. I had it ranked very lowly. However, when I first listened to the remaster when it was recently released I realized how wrong I was. It is awesome! I have it in my top 4 (along with Colors, Colors 2, and Alaska).

It's damn near impossible for me to rank this band properly. The first two albums are lower tier for me but still great then everything from Alaska onwards is easy S tier in my music catalog. Ranking any one above another almost feels like a disservice. One of the few bands I truly hold on a higher level because they are so consistently amazing and everything I want in music.
This is an awesome ranking! My only changes would be to drop the "Silent Circus" album down a tier and "automata" down two tiers. Am I the only one that was super disappointed in automata?

BTBAM is a band that is so close to becoming one of my top 10 favorite metal bands Colors 2 I hope lives it up to the hype.

Great video. BTBAM is my favorite band and this is coming from a guy who's been listening to metal for over 30 years. Their music is a perfect combination of multiple metal genres into songs that never get old. I feel like I'm still discovering new aspects to their music after years of listening to the same songs. Just a joy to listen to. I'm pretty on board with your list and think it's a fair assessment. Personally I would swap Automata I&II with The Great Misdirect. I think Automata is good and there are some excellent songs, but as a whole piece of work it's good but not great. I love The Great Misdirect and that album flows so well front to back (it's also the album that introduced me to this band, so I may be a bit bias!). Thanks for the review and love to see another passionate BTBAM fan out there!
Yeah I think many would agree with your change. I am supposed to see them Sunday so who knows, maybe seeing those songs live will change my mind.

2) I never payed fully attention to S/T or The Anatomy Of so I can't include them in the list (for now). Yet the odds are probably C and D Tiers.
Seen them live twice. First time with mastodon. Second time with job for a cowboy. Colors is my favorite. First one I owned and heard. Talking about running on the treadmill. I used to walk an hour to work every morning (it was stupid yeah) and I listened to them.
I also got into these guys with the silent circus - the run from Alaska to Parallax 2 to me is perfection, every second of all those albums is amazing, they are all S tier for me, but TGM is probably my favourite overall.
I have to admit I didn’t really love coma or the automatas, they weren’t bad but I never listened to them incessantly like I did with the earlier stuff.
I had some trepidation coming into colors 2 but it has completely blown me away on every level.

Debut is the best for me. Why? It's the only one that had a classical metalcore sound element to it. Other albums are excellent of coure however I'm the weird guy that really thinks the debut is the best, a real masterpiece
Finally someone who shares the appreciation for Alaska! A completely underrated album ! For me it is their best record because their songwriting has never been better IMO. It was the perfect combination of technicality and heaviness plus their best songs are on this album. I would even rank The Parallax Theory above Colors. Still considering all three S-Tier albums as well, I only would call Alaska a “perfect“ one.
I have to wait and see where Colors ll will end up, after three listenings I can definitely see it climbing into S-Tier. So far my album of the year!

Parrallax 1 and 2 are my favorite albums of all time. You seem to have the exact same opinions on the band as me, except you didn't mention The Proverbial Bellow being one of their best tracks ever.... You bastard!

For me, self titled and silent circus had some of my really favorite tracks but kinda sparse, so C. Similar feelings towards Alaska but I like more of those tracks, maybe A or B. While Colors is an S tier for many people, I'd actually put it in A. Maybe I am objectively wrong on this and need to listen to it again. Perhaps it was the timing when I found BTBAM and what was going on in my life that I'd put TGM on S, and yes thats above Colors. I thoroughly enjoyed Parallax I, bringing back memories of that nocturnal student life, despite how rough things were, but I felt the sound could have been more refined or mixed better, or maybe that was the intent, A. Parallax II was like enjoying another TGM again, S. Due to life and mental health, I missed the hype of enjoying Coma, and should probably allocate more time to enjoy it so I feel I cant meaningfully place it into any rank. Automata definitely took some time for me to adapt and enjoy the entire collection, so by now, it's an S tier. Similar story with Colors 2, although instead of expanding my palate for the entire album, I kinda shifted my attention from the first half to the latter half of the album starting with Abyss, so at the moment it's also an A tier, unless I can give the halves A and S in that order. I also bought a pair of cowbells just because of this album. I agree with that D tier. I'm a fan of BTBAM for their work, and not that into covers.

TGM has been growing on me ever more... But my favorite is the Parallax II. I think every newcomer should get Colors first, but parallax II is my third, maybe second favorite album of all time.

Self Title was 100% intended to be a joke album as the band was originally started satirically. They realized how much we all wanted this sound and gave us Silent Circus, which is entirely based on the last song of Self Titled.
I also do not like the parallax albums. They sound like they thought it was a good idea to make 2 entire albums out of their chaotic transitions.

A: Coma Ecliptic, Silent Circus, Automata 1&2
B: The Great Misdirect, Self Titled
C: Paralax Albums
D: Anatomy Of just because it is a cover album.
Self titled wasn't a joke, they wrote a serious metalcore album. The riffs weren't too different from Paul's previous bands.

You could argue the colors II is better than colors. And that says a LOT.
Bruh the reason you don’t like TGM is bc you don’t like Disease, Injury, Madness which is an “S” Tier Song. Clearly one of their heaviest and most badass songs. Go back and fall in love with that song, and you’ll at least throw it into A tier
Bruh, I been listening to this band since Silent Circus came out. I own TGM, I will continue to listen to it, but if it still hasn’t clicked after all of these years maybe we just have different tastes. Imagine that 😂 We good though cuz we both love BTBAM 🖤 Also, one great song is not enough to make an album great.

I’m not doubting your love for the band or listening to tracks…but just saying that Disease, Injury, Madness ends up on a lot of top 10 BTBAM song lists for a reason!

Music is subjective. That being said, putting The Great Misdirect as low as you did, is crazy (or a ploy to garner comments... which I'm taking the bait). But even the band has said 'Fossil Genere is the song that they would first show to someone that best explains/showcases their music'. Based on your metrics, easily an A or S.
It's not a ploy. I would never do that. It's my honest opinion. Like I said I know it's not necessarily a popular one but I really could care less.
I know a lot of people who were pretty disappointed with TGM (me included) so I don’t even think it is an unpopular opinion. I, on the other hand, cannot understand why so many people put Alaska that low on their lists. A masterpiece, especially considering the time when it came out. TGM did not do anything special IMO and sounded more like Colors with more weird just for the sake of being weird-elements that did (and unfortunately still do) not click with me that well. Not a bad album for sure but an underwhelming one for me.
I respect your top 3 but seeing great misdirect (my fave) in C tier is sad.

Unpopular opinion. I don’t like voice of trespass.
Unfortunately, BTBAM is just a band that I appreciate more than I like. In fact I can say that about 99% of prog metal. It's just a really hard subgenre for me to embrace fully because so much of it feels too self-indulgent.
That being said, Colors is a banger.

In my opinion Voice of Trespass is the worst thing they’ve ever done. I hate it. Twice I’ve left the show when it knew it was their closing song (I catch them every socal show even if they play two) and like… I don’t get it. It’s so lame lol. I know Paul loves it but holy fuck it’s bad. Yikes.
