  • Mailbox Peak is one of the best and most difficult hikes you can do in Washington State. The trailhead just 40 minutes outside of Seattle. We hiked up the Mailbox Peak Old Trail one Tuesday after work and made sure to document it all, so you can know to expect hiking Mailbox Peak on the Old Trail.
The original Mailbox Peak trail features a 5.4-mile roundtrip hike with 4,000 feet of elevation gain. If you do the math, then you're hiking 2.7 miles from the trailhead to the peak. Doesn't sound that bad at first, right? Well, factor in the 4000 feet of elevation gain, and you're looking at about 1500 feet of elevation gain per mile. If you spit your coffee out reading that, I can understand why.
Check out my full blog post to read more about the hike: bit.ly/mailbox...
Hiking the Mailbox Peak Old Trail took me 2 hours and 13 minutes to reach the peak and 2 hours to hike the new trail back to the car. The Mailbox Peak Old Tail is not for the faint of heart.
This trail is so strenuous that the Washington Trails Association decided to build a new, gentler path to the peak. The new trail sits at 9.4 miles roundtrip with an elevation gain of about 850 per mile. You're still climbing a total of 4,000 feet in elevation, but it is not nearly as strenuous.

My cousin told me we were doing a lil couple hour hike I was like oh ok I ve never been on a hike before so we got to the fucking base I look up at the biggest mountain I’ve seen in my fucking life and we go and my time perception is was off I’m just shocked the whole time at the experience going up it was beautiful no doubt but it was some fuckery who the fuck does this shit for fun. When you get to the rocks omgf it sucks, the peak was cool asf it was kinda worth it thinking back but at the time. Fuck no . Going down I literally descended in to a purgatory it sucked it felt like forever N I was stuck walking down a mountain lol . But yeah never again

The old trail is a wild one. The views are great at the top and it’s worth it. I recommend taking the new trail down.

Mad respect taking 2 hours to get to the peak. Took me 3 hours and I didnt stop for a break aside from putting spikes on my boots.

I really do believe we need to have a different term for this than hiking. Its really mountain climbing, but people think going up a cliff when they hear that term. I think at any point where its just uphill and the roots and rocks are more prominent than the dirt and plants, you can't really call it hiking.

I hope you can answer a question. Years ago I hiked twin falls. At the top at the fire road there was an extremely narrow path that seemed to lead straight up. I ended up at the water shed. I think that is what it's called. I couldn't find the view area. Must have taken the wrong fork in the road. Do you know the name of that trail?

See maybe I’d go on more hikes if I brought a 12 pack and some js.
