    Abstract:
“I argue that the syntax of human language is simply represented using dependency grammar (Tesniere, 1959; Hays, 1964; Melcuk, 1988; Hudson, 1984, 2015; Osborne, 2019; Nefdt and Baggio, 2023), in which words are connected via dependencies to form larger compositional meanings. It is shown that several properties of word order across languages - such as the same head-direction across word categories - follow straightforwardly from a simple cognitive constraint applied to dependency grammars: dependency length minimization. Many on-line processing effects also follow naturally from dependency locality (Gibson, 1998, 2000). I argue that a transparent way to represent dependency lengths is through dependency grammar.”
