I don't know how much rain you get, but I'd watch out for flooding! it can erode the trench rather quickly. If you use brick with drain pipes and french drains on the sides of the retaining wall, along with maybe some more gravel closer to the house [to encourage a slope to go down the trench] may help.

Thanks for you ideas. This trench was dug several years ago. This red dirt we have doesn’t move easily.
