Sometimes DIYs are worn less because they feel so special that it's a shame to use them, or because it can feel like a risk, like if a seam rips it's my fault and makes me bad at sewing. At least that's my experience.

So true - also for me personally I wear them less because I fear people are gonna notice that they are homemade and in my country that can resonate with people thinking your cheap. Although materials are so costly and you spent a lot of time making these items

I think if you prefer layering clothes for winter than it would make sense that your utilisation is higher, but most of us don't? So I doubt you should throw anything out until you hit the one year mark just because colder/warmer months can give very different readings and a more well rounded view of how you utilise everything

This is so true, I think come Autumn this year I'll do a mini closet sale to pass along some of the things I definitely won't be wearing, but will keep the maybe items!

The thing is it seems like you like to sew pieces with interesting construction elements but like to wear pieces with sometimes interesting patterns but usually simple construction. It may just be a question of deciding whether you’re sewing for things you’ll wear or as demonstrations/entertainment for your audience. So some of your designs would be more 'work output' rather than 'wardrobe', the same way most fashion designers dress minimalist or in a uniform, but design extravagant and with surprising new elements for customers. Personally I find the former more relevant and relatable, but it’s your channel!
Also I noticed something for you that I have with myself: if a piece is a struggle to put on, I will always choose something else and it’s fine to bid it goodbye. I’ve given up on popover sleeved dresses in stiff fabrics for instance. Feels like I’m putting on a straitjacket and it’s wrinkly before I’ve even stepped out of the house! I’m done with feeling restrained by my clothes. I find I can dress interesting while still being super comfortable, as you clearly do and are in the things you wear weekly.
Other than that, the pandemic disrupted the level of outings we did or continue to participate in, so that has also affected which older items are getting worn now (maybe fewer evening, formal or flashy events).
A tip for others just starting out with this kind of app: for those with a smallish clothes collection, entering everything into the app upfront can work. But for anyone who has an extensive closet, I’d suggest entering the items you know you wear the most, then entering the rest *if and when* you actually wear it. Then two years down the line when you’re considering donating something, the fact that you haven’t even entered it into the app tells you that you haven’t worn it without all the computer work.

it makes sense to have more tops because they are more likely to get sweaty and need to be washed. Also, there is more of a limit on how many different types of pants or bottoms you want--I think that is the area to get more classic or wardrobe basics.

As someone who basically only leaves the house two or three times a month because of health issues, I really wonder whether an app like this would work for me. I usually wear the same 2 to 3 outfits because it emotionally helps with the stress of going outside, requires zero thought, and I can get away with it because it's weeks apart. My closet utilization would probably be extremely low, and by the apps logic I should own like 10 items of clothing lol, when that wouldn't work once i'm healthier again.
I also see myself wearing the same things over and over as a flaw that i'm trying to overcome - in reality I actually really like a lot of my less worn clothes, and they become a part of my regular rotation when I make the effort. I just don't wear them because it's less mentally taxing to repeat outfits. But I don't want to wear the same outfits all the time, I just find it boring, and it's been making me happier to wear different things. I think apps like this are helpful in identifying patterns in regards to what you do and don't gravitate towards, but only you know the reasons why. I also think a potential solution is actively trying to wear your less worn clothes to see if the issue is that you don't like them, or something else ( you've just overlooked them, you're afraid of other's judgement, they don't work irl the way they did in your head, there's a fit issue, etc.)

I have a similar problem with the mental effort, so I separate the outfit creation process to a different time. I use the app to create outfit ideas (on the train, during a break, etc.). Then, in the morning, or on a day at which I have the capacity, I pick one of my new ideas, put on the clothes and make a photo. And then either right after, or when I get around to, see if I like it and tag it in the app accordingly. When I am under pressure, I can revisit my photo collection and pick an outfit that has been tested before, so I don't have to create a new outfit on the spot. Usually, I start with the shoes I plan to wear, and then pick a fitting outfit according to circumstance and weather. Maybe this could work for you too? (P.S.: I also use the app to track my outfit wears, but my focus is more on seeing which items are under-used and trying to make new outfits that include those pices. You can even use the app to get a suggestion on what to wear a certain item with, so if you want to incorporate a certain item into your daily wear, the app can make a suggestion for you and you just have to try it on and see if you like that.)

Before I saw your part 1 video, I started this super tedious process of taking inventory for my entire closet (shoes, purses, clothes, jewellery, EVERYTHING) in an attempt to downsize and REALLY take control of my shopping habits.
The UA-cam algorithm is insane because it recommended your part 1 video to me while I was in the midst of my project. I immediately downloaded the app and it has been SUCH a great supplement! My favourite part is that it also keeps track of my outfits. I get so overwhelmed looking at my closet that I forget some of the amazing combinations I can come up with.

I know that the percentage of the clothes in my closet that I wear is at the 50 mark or lower, but I’m definitely comfortable with that number. First;y, I know I have MANY specialty items. It’s something I allow myself, having pretty dresses, or other things for extremely particular occasions just brings me so much joy, and I still only thrift everything I wear, so the purchase is always worth it for me. Secondly, how much I get to wear actual “outfits” that fit my style that truly pull from my wardrobe fluctuates depending on my situation. For example, right now I’m living back at home at my parents house, without a job or any other consistent reason to leave the house. I hardly ever put on clothes other than what I sleep in. Before this, I had my first job in my profession, working wardrobe for a theatre. I wore all black every single day I went to work. Again, hardly wearing what’s actually in my wardrobe. And before that the other jobs I’ve had have been retail/food service so there’s still a dress code, though going to school certainly gave me a reason to put my clothes on. I really miss wearing my clothes. My aesthetic is a major pride point of mine.

That way you'll have a cool memory to look back on without having to hold on to the item itself. And items like the bellsleeve turtleneck are maybe candidates for a lil alteration. :)

My lazy organizational way is just by using colors I wear frequently, mostly black tops, (I try to add interest by introducing texture with items/styles like ruching, lace, satin, knit), dark wash jeans, with a few tans, greens, blues, whites sneaking in via tops. As I cosplay at medieval faires and comic cons, most of my closet looks a bit odd...hence the dark colors of my "reality" clothes so as to take up less space. May seem contradictory, but I love to watch a good plan, app or other organizational tool being utilized to make a wardrobe more efficient.

This video reminded me of the styling class from this spring semester. My professor would love to hear about this app! We had to give ourselves + another person a makeover based on lifestyle factors, budget, ideal image, and existing closet to create a capsule wardrobe. I have way too many graphic t-shirts and not enough basics. I'm more confident in making outfits on the much smaller wardrobe I currently have, but it feels daunting knowing I have to search for more items and get rid of a few more pieces ':^0 Loved this video and will try the app out, too.

seeing this I really wish fabric would be cheaper were I live :') because I don't have a lot of money all the clothes I have are from fast fashion stores but being worn until they literally fall apart, at least 4 years, most way longer.
I have one dress that I made myself from bedsheets and I LOVE it and wear it whenever I can!
but fabric is really expensive esp. when you wear plus size like me :') I easily used 3m of fabric for that dress (teacup length and full circle skirt)

Creative people like you must see beauty and utility in a lot. I hope you aren't guilted into parting with your designs. My husband said someone will steal your jacket design for sure. Then when you showed your core wardrobe -- we both agreed, you look great even in that tie dye dress but hide in your day to day clothes like a lot of women. But you are a mom and that's gotta be where your energy is going. I have a ton of clothes and yes I want to restyle or tailor some of them but so hard to get rid of them because I too love fabric, textile, etc. Haven't seen you play the guitar yet.

I'm pretty sure my utilization is about 20% lol but I'm OK with that. I know i have pieces i love and reuse often. It's also less mentally draining to just repeat the same outfit often. But then i have alot of exciting pieces i like and eventually at some point i may wear them. Even if it's once a year or once in a few years, i do keep things, i have items from 2 decades ago, so eventually they even come back in style too. I'm fine with that tbh. The only thing that bothers me is i have a hard time getting rid of things, some things annoy me when they don't fit well or have stains but i still struggle to get rid of it. Also the lower quality of clothes nowadays annoys me too.

I’ve been using the Whering app for a couple years and my usage percentage just keeps going down because I only wear clothes for work and I have mostly fun clothes. Since I don’t leave the house it rapidly goes down as my wardrobe goes up. I also gained weight so I can’t wear 50+% of my clothes which is why I’m trying my best to slim down

Really interesting to see your outfits but a bit confusing that the flatlays and your demonstrations weren't in sync ! Do you really only wear one set of clothes all day ? I find myself changing depending on the activity : staying home, going to an appointment, doing some sport, chilling etc.

Same, but I’m the type of person who just finds one shirt I like, buys it in 5 different colors, and leave it at that. Maybe a sweater, same for long sleeves. I also just wear them until they break (5-7 years), but mostly because I hate shopping lol
