How do you keep the copper levels low enough to stop copper staining? I am intersted in installing this setup but want to make sure that I can measure and control copper levels.
You need to wait for the copper level to get high enough to compensate for less chemicals... that will take time. (2 weeks) Depends on the sun and your pool size
I use it. And it reduces the amount of chemicals I need. My pipes are more like an 1/8 inch I'm not sure how much amperage you need for a 1/4 inch. The larger the gap the more amperage you need, and the larger the colloids. So smaller is better.

Living in Arizona where the temperature reaches 120F and the pool temps exceed 90F algae can be an issue. Adding this unit in my spa which spills over to the pool cut down on chlorine usage and cleaning greatly. I cut up the 5/8" electrical copper ground rod into 7-inch pieces and used 5/8" stainless steel clamps to attach the wires from the solar panel. For a floater, I cut off part of a pool noodle and placed the rods one inch apart so no cable ties were needed To collect the excessive copper build-up chunks that fall in the pool I wrapped the rods in a skimmer net. Costs: Copper rod $15.00, Clamps $1.00/each, Noodle $1.00, Skimmer net $0.40 and 5W solar panel $15.00. The rods need to be replaced once a year.
@@kevinsmith364 Last month I broke down and bought an XtremepowerUS Solar Pool Ionizer from Walmart. The other worked fine but I needed to replace the copper rod. I would recommend copper pipe versus the rod. The ground rod kept on needing to replaced whereas the solid pipe last longer.

A cheap current regulator module should be included to control the amount of copper going in, which is exactly how overpriced commercial inonizers work. You can also buy ionizer electrodes containing the right ratio of copper and silver to respectively kill algae and bacteria, they're expensive but a relative bargain considering how much silver they contain, and that'll they'll last many years. You also really need that silver to kill pathogens, because copper basically only kills algae. You can also use just use copper sulfate and silver chloride or nitrate to put said ions into the water, which is exactly how the other type of ionizer works.

While your setup is sound, virtually all of your explanations are wrong. This is about ionization, not colloidalization because the current produces copper IONS. The reason this sanitizes a pool is not because of the size of the cells in algae, but because of the electric charge carried by the copper ions and the charge of the algae organic material.
