I studied and took a degree in Earth sheltered homes in the 80s.
All this time no one has pushed or perfected this type of design but Michael.
Architecture has gone down the wrong road for decades focusing on style and an outdated form of efficiency.
I had friends I recommended they go down and stay in one of these structures they loved it.
I'm looking forward to doing the same thing and hopefully maybe getting to meet the man, what a brilliant design philosophy what a brilliant career what a contribution. ❤️

I really like those traditional Russian oven fireplace designs, very efficient. Like when they have the central brick mass and spiralling flu inside it and the little spot for a bed ect.
I can almost imagine that style of fireplace in the center of a building something like this, along with the solstice angled design for the south facing glass, then second glass barrier after the conservatory zone then with really thick curtains behind them to close after sundown.
Would be incredibly efficient probably, make a very little bit of firewood or gas heating go a really long way in the coldest places/winters.

It's amazing, it is actually a mansion relative to the vast majority of people. It's brings a very high quality of life very many increments potentially closer to so many more people for a very reasonable amount of resources and energy requirements.
I think it works to to integrate the mains gas and power to your own systems, if that gets you around building regs why not. Bit of standing charge maybe but also the added security and maybe even adding to the grid electrically also? Would be a convenient storage mechanism in a way rather than needing a load of lithium battery banks.

Create your Own cross draft ,My mother in law taught me how to live in hot confined spaces of apartment dwellings by using fans to exhaust hot air and pull in cooler air after sunset ,choosing a room you will not use at night and making sure there is only one draft out of that room to outside it cuts down on the number of hours of uncomfortable temps . I have used this to pull window air conditioning into other rooms. I saw an earthship in the 1990s in a wandering , it was love at 1st sight.

It's definitely worth people understanding that, you can air condition your home quite well with just a fan or two rather than anything more intensive. I'm now thinking about my apartment thermals a bit more as you mentioned and after this hot summer. I use all my grey water to flush these days also after seeing these buildings, although no way to build little indoor gardens to run it through.
These buildings just work from sunlight convection though don't they. You just open or close the cupboard at the back, no fan required due to the windows being south facing and the tube running under a lot of earth cools the air drawn through from the north side.
I'm thinking I might be able to install a transom for n my attic I wonder if that will work more or less, or at least help if I leave the attic hatch open..

It’s shocking how happy he makes me feel with this work and vision and how morbid and depressing civilization is becoming elsewhere that humans do not follow the lead of spiritual geniuses like Mr Reynolds.

Absolutely beautiful and humanitarian. If it can be built anywhere will your team (the Academy) be able to travel within the states to volunteer their time if there was a stipend for food and travel expense? And how much acreage is needed for one beautiful house like that?

Been trying to tell as many people as I can about your dwellings for years especially having lived in AZ for awhile. Now they're seeing severe drought in the SW/ California that only further points to a change in how they should view contemporary dwellings that maximize precious water in that region. Unfortunately, it appears the window of opportunity closed awhile ago- no one listens.

Such a practical cozy home. I think these homes would work very well in Eastern Oregon and Washington. Codes need to be updated so badly.

Something that I noticed unlike the encounter this earth ship looks like it only has a single layer of glass meaning no double glass wall like in the encounter model does it have some type of thermal glass? Where is the insulation and solar energy and thermal mass interaction just that powerful?Somehow the interaction between solar thermal energy and thermal mass somehow more powerful in this than the encounter say more surface area exposed to sunlight?

    • @ericritchie6783
      @ericritchie6783 2 роки тому

I think this is about simplifying a design procedure, such as they don't need to angle the glass in this climate either as that complicates the construction process more. They just need the big thick curtains to hold heat after sundown instead. They've integrated mains gas into their own systems also ect to reduce issues with building regs.
I think it gets very cold there in winter but in very very very cold climates like Canada or Siberia maybe, the angled glass and second set of windows would again bare considering more perhaps. I think though it makes a whole lot of of sense to strip the design principles down to some of the most fundamental aspects, in fact it's very important to do so. Michael and Co are have researched everything incredibly well for decades, visionaries.
