    Ya' know ... every time I view one of these Earthship videos, I am reminded once again the "GENIUS" of what is Michael Reynolds. These concepts are now so tried and true and so well tested over many decades that one has to wonder if the Powers-that-be are ever going to clue in. These concepts are now axioms. They simply WORK. What a legacy, Michael. The World is a much better place having had the likes of Mr. Michael Reynolds. Kudos to You, Sir. Well done indeed. You are an inspiration to all thinking, sentient beings. Greetings from Ontario, Canada.

      The "powers that be" have no interest in losing any control. And since people don't understand #ControlledOpposition, the masses keep fighting against themselves while giving up their power to the very people who enslave them.

      @@dustinabcSo true. The "powers" that SHOULDN'T BE wouldn't have power over ANYONE if WE didn't give it to them by default, and there's only one way to take it back: one earthship, one intentional community, one permaculture farm, one mutually-reliant relationship, one alternative economic choice, one sustainable partnership with our planet, and one ethically-motivated decision to NOT FEED PARASITES, at a time, everywhere and always. Here is the future, served up on a platter of dirt and junk- seize the day, and a sledgehammer, and make it better. Thank you Michael Reynolds, there will be one more coming soon to learn your methods and put them into practice in Tennessee.

    Hey Michael, big fan of your work. I think you can get cost & labor hours way down by using a belt lift like miners do to trolley the dirt up to where you need it. That way the guy up top filling the tires only has to move the belt lift over to the next tire. It would be way quicker IMO and way cheaper, way easier. To make this really a viable solution we'd need to brainstorm a way to get filling those tires cheaper & quicker. That's your last real stumbling block. You're a true innovative & creative NM pioneer sir! You got this!

    Back in the 1970s I had a book on earth-sheltered houses and their floor plans. I so wanted one of these houses back in the day, then could only find conventional homes for sale. Loan officers were unwilling to do construction loans for such experimental houses. Maybe today loan officers and builders would think differently.
    I wish a developer would do an entire housing development of smaller versions of these houses out here in southern Nevada. Imagine the energy savings and water savings if every new house was built like this.

    • @dustinabc
      @dustinabc 6 місяців тому +1

      There is a reason - the labor cost of building these homes is quite high. Economic realities are a big hurdle to this style of home, especially for them being mass produced.
      I'm not sure if the energy savings ever match up to the additional cost to build. With net-zero and passive house homes also an option, I think many people would choose those.

    Nice new iteration. Some more design flair at the Atlantis wall would have made it look more impressive. Some waves with different tones of blue and some white to make it pop.
    Pepino melons and papayas should grow well inside. A trellis to grow some vine like chayote, luffa, squash etc would look impressive. In summer it would help block sun. Cut it back in winter to let the sun in.

    Here's an idea to try! Tree Fountain (aka Tree of Life)
    1- Bore a hole into and up a tree being careful not to bisect the core of the tree.
    2- Coat the inside of the hole with beeswax.
    3- Put a water basin at the top and a fire pit or fireplace at the bottom.
    4- Put copper pipe around the inside of the fire pit or up the chimney for a fireplace. This will act as a pump. (You can also use a hotplate if you prefer)
    5- Add water wheels (fidget spinners can be used for some decent mini water wheels) for electricity.
    6- Add hanging gardens for fresh produce.
    7- Splice other saplings and/or fresh tree cuttings using the tongue and groove method for shelter.
    This design provides food, filtered and conditioned water and air, electricity, shelter and SO much more! Everything a person needs for life and survival. Hence the "Tree of Life" nickname!

    • @earthship
      @earthship  6 місяців тому

      Earthships heat and cool themselves using thermal mass, temperature stored in the dirt in the tires, and the berm surrounding the building. During the day, the solar gain through the greenhouse will heat the building and your walls, and then at night the walls slowly release heat to replace the loss that happens when the sun is not out.

    • @carolewarner101
      @carolewarner101 6 місяців тому +1

      @@earthship I already know this, however, most of the earthships I've been exposed to also have a little back-up heat source, especially if there are a lot of overcast days where one is located. I guess that's not the case their in New Mexico/Arizona area where you're located though. But what does one do in that home if they feel a little chilled and want to warm the place up a bit and/or charge up their thermal battery.

    • @dustinabc
      @dustinabc 6 місяців тому

      @@carolewarner101shhhh! You're not supposed to ask questions! Haha. Ya, sometimes I get annoyed that these videos on earth ships only address the pros, and either gloss over the cons, or try to pretend that the cons are actually pros.
      I have found a couple videos over the years where people who have actually lived in them shared their experiences honestly.
      I think the concepts are great, but with advances in building science and materials I personally would rather build something like a Passive House.

    • @carolewarner101
      @carolewarner101 6 місяців тому

      @@dustinabc Honestly, I do prefer natural materials and low tech vs all the materials and high technology of a passive house. So this kind of building appeals to me. However, most people want their home to be warmer than the earth itself will keep it in winter. I do at least. Particularly where I live in the Pacific Northwest, we can go three months without seeing the sun in winter! So we would definitely need something to recharge the thermal mass battery of an Earthship in winter. That said, it's a relatively mild climate where we are, so once the mass was fully charged, it wouldn't take much to keep it topped up. I think radiant floor heat that could be run off a wood stove would make an excellent choice in our case.
      Hope you get to build your Passive House!

    With record high temperatures every year, it is imperative that we build houses with passive heating and cooling like these Earthships have. Unfortunately, most home builders refuse to do this which is why people suffer from high heating and cooling bills and air conditioners continue to release harmful hydrofluorocarbons.

      A little more relevant to *existing* buildings in need of retrofit is the architectural work of #passivhaus or, #passivehouse. Because we deserve much more better architecture instruction for new AND existing, residential, governmental and commercial buildings. 0:45

      Earthships here in Taos require 2 acres - this is code for our county - it varies. An Earthship greenhouse of this size can only supplement your diet. The botanical cells are for wastewater recycling and some food production, but you will need to implement hanging plants, legumes, and possibly livestock to be fully self sufficient.
