This type of housing has been popularized for about three decades now. It was much more affordable back then. Today, it costs as much or more to build this type of home as it costs to just buy a commercially produced home. I am estimating around $300,000.00 to fund an Earth'ship build today. Including land, permits, contractors, etc. Meaning: These may be "SELF SUSTAINABLE" homes. But, they are certainly not affordable for the vast vast majority of people if my estimates are even 1/3 correct.
@@cleverkids6196There is a limit to DIY on a house build. No matter what type of house that is being built. There are strict code requirements for electrical (Solar included), plumbing, Heating/A-C, framing, roofing, etc. It all has to be done to code. These aspects of home building apply to Earthship homes too. This means that a DIY home builder has to posess the required skills and licenses to do the work in all four of the mentioned trade areas. Otherwise they must hire licensed tradesmen to do the work in all four of the areas I just listed. But the vast majority of people do not posess those skills. And so there is no cost savings to be had in the areas where you have to hire contractors and licensed tradesmen. Also and most crucial to my arguement is the fact nearly 3/4 of the population doesn't have $500.00 in savings, nor any investments, nor pension funds. So unless these "Affordable" homes suddenly become free to build, the average person, including your aspiring DIY home builder, doesn't have $300-400,000.00 to build an earthship. ***Note: There are a handfull of states, or even counties where building permits are not required. This effectively also means no code standards to meet. But the issue of funds, or lack thereof still applies.
Beautiful and cozy!!.....the only 2 things I don't like is that she doesn't have a bed room door,... I feel much more save if there is another door I can close...and the other thing is I hate the boring and super hot desert, because I really LOVE LOVE LOVE the cold I love the forest and mountains with snow on top...so its just the wrong place for me.... I would love this home somewhere up in Canada or Montana surrounded by lakes and tones of trees!!!
I'm totally with you! Need green trees around me without dusty desert and heat. Love fresh water from the mountains and moss! My house can be smaller too only a place for orchids and other plants will be fine because i am not healty i love to have nature in my walls if i can't get out much. Bungalow will be perfect without many staires.
Fantastic! Recycling and natural energy would be a great solution for every single building on Earth, but what I see as a problem is people's unwillingness to learn. Most investors and builders would rather work in "classic" ways even if that means spending much more money on literally everything (except to pay workers) and more pollution than to change their ways. People are lazy, that's our issue. Me included. But, well I am not young anymore, it's to this new generation to accept this new ways. I hope.
I would like to see some real use of drip irrigation to grow foods for the residents .If residents still eat from grocery stores mostly ..that needs to be fixed .It' s beautiful but must feed you too. IMO
As a lover of music I would suggest the segue music might be more appropriate with natural acoustic instrument sounds. I watched the episode all the way through, kudos to Ms. Kirsten and her organization.
There needs to be some modifications for the local environment, but other than that earthships have been built all over the world. I've searched/Googled and have found cold climate examples built in Alaska, Ontario, PEI, Vermont and Maine.
They want to expand the idea....I've looked into earthships before. They're incredible expensive. Great idea, but not scalable when looking at the costs
I am excited to see your wonderful works and am also an entrepreneur would love you to come Ghana west Africa to come make use of alot of our natural resources to do alot for us..will love to be part of this wonderful dream..
These end up being relatively expensive due to their extensive systems for being off grid. Also labor costs. But there are other more affordable alternatives.
First, I want to apologizes for being such a man. These people are beautiful. Physical work is good for humans. Notice when she says, "taking care of your own needs". People in "civilization" do not realize how it's killing them or the low quality of life it creates.
These are expensive to build and very labour intensive. You won't grow enough food in one even for one person. If you want a better house look at David Easton on this rammed earth houses.

Not if you DIY everything
Have you also calculated the yearly cost of utilities and maintenance to run a commercially produced home?

You are right. They are not the most accessible but I like to explore various methods. Cob and straw bales are the way to go.
Back in the day the houses were smaller and diy was possible with help from a few friends
The entire world needs to see this!
Thank you 🙏
Eco Build Lab sounds like normalization of Earthship ethos is happening! Keep Going!
Congratulations on a beautiful & sustainable dream come true.
Impressed at first sight
I am so jealous! I love the interior the floors and the windows! Most of all I love the open desert space!
🙏💙
I would love to go visit these building. I would love to build one, & think my adult children would love them also

Unbeschreiblich schön 😮
Beautiful home 🏡

We must become more human-centric and less profit motivated
Absolutely beautiful!
Amazing! First time discovery of this concept - wow! I'd love to get off the grid.
I’m glad you enjoyed it :) thanks so much 🫶🌞
Good stuff good stuff
Your house is very beautiful 🌹

dennis weaver did 1 back in the 70's nice. he was on gunsmoke for years, money wasnt an issue w him, it was about being smart
Does she live in a newer earthship? So many of these videos seem to have earthships that the owners rent out on airBNB rather than live in themselves.
She does live in a different Earthship currently

Totally my dream house. My concern is; would it works well in a nordic climate? I’m in Canada

Самый красивый дизайн earthship который я видел.
Fantastic thank you. One question; why earthships don’t use composting toilets?
We're building the Unity model in Santa Fe County in just a few weeks, and we're looking to put together a crew.
How do you think a earthship home would do in Louisiana??
Do they have problems with plumbing and wiring along the flexible rammed walls?
I'm moving there and I don't know where to live and I do want to do the internship I think the guy's name is Mike Reynolds he's part of bio tech
So beautiful and practical I’ve always loved these homes can they be built anywhere?
Depends a lot on permitting but will become more accessible
Also depends on how much rain. Sometimes moisture can make an interior damp if ventilation isn’t perfect.
Will you come build a community of earth ships in TN? We are serious and have accommodations for you and crew.
Lovely home! Does she no longer live there and why?
She lives in a different Earthship in the same area and rents this one on Airbnb :)
how much in all was ur cost in this project. im selling my homes in wv and moving to ohio in country
I am excited to see your wonderful works and am also an entrepreneur would love you to come Ghana west Africa to come make use of alot of our natural resources to do alot for us..will love to be part of this wonderful dream..
How long will these homes last?
Much longer than plywood
Thailand I’m interested !
Can these be build in famp climates? Like the west coast?
What is a Famp Climate 🤔
@@jamesglenn520 damp climate

Does anyone know the exact window dimensions and the number of glass layers in this earthship?
Would love to build one here in Ga but have no clue who does it here.
💙🙏
It's most likely to fail in humid, rainy climates :(
The cost please ?

Ive been begging the Earthship community to come help me build an earth ship on my property for years...
Is this home in the earthship community near the other homes?
Yes

In order to "live green" you have to have plenty of money. Profits and gimmicks for the sellers and buyers.
Not true
It's called green washing, the people that promote these house's ether live in them or build them. A lot are rented out.
And what is so bad with "Hippie Granola?" I prefer less work with similar mass, Straw Bales!
I like straw bales as well 😎
Micheal Reynolds! ❤❤❤❤
An aluminium baseball bat works well to pack the filled tires
