@tommy aronson you judge the art piece not the process of making it usually, if da Vinci made the joconde while drunk n high it wouldn't change the beauty of the painting, it would still have the same effects on you

There's a lot of people who are actively hostile to this idea. They are angry at thought that the very words the choose betray their intentions, that they could have meaning, do harm.

@@z-beeblebroxYep. And, when that happened I couldn't help but feel that the "country lawyer" was counting on this testimony being revealed on the assumptive pre-assumption that the "big city lawyer" from Lansing probably had towards the witness Mary Pilant.
He had promised her earlier, when investigating, that he wouldn't reveal her relationship to the victim (I couldn't remember the words exactly), but it was clear then that this revelation might be useful or germane in some way, and possibly helpful for the defense.
Of course it only bolstered her credibility as a witness, nothing extremely revolutionary in regards to guilt or innocence. A small win, but substantial enough to further Jimmy Stewart's character's build of a competing narrative.
Apparently, I've subscribed to this channel before at sometime. I don't question my previous judgment. I just found this video from just recently watching this great movie for the first time. Afterwards, I immediately did a search on UA-cam just to see if any else was taken back this movie
This video doesn't an excellent job at distilling down the brilliance of this masterpiece. I'll have to pay closer attention this channel

The thing I love about the "in court" discussion of the word "panties" is that much of the dialog was added into the script from conversations the director, the producers and the cast had when they were told by Hollywood censors that they couldn't use the word "panties" in a movie.

I know I'm late to the game here (I had to go watch the movie before I could watch this video). This may very well be the best Nerdwriter video to date. The editing feels really mature, because it's consistent, interesting, but never distracting, it shows an artistic ambition, but as much of an ambition to augment the script with its visuals. This was in fact so good that I decided to become a patron for the first time in my life. Usually my stance to Patreon is that we have way too much entertainment in the world as it is, but The Nerdwriter has now moved beyond entertainment and has instead become a symbol of "anti-fast-food-approach-to-culture-ism", and an inspiration for intellectual curiosity - and that is something we definitely need more of. Excellent work my good man! Keep it up!

Another great video of course! You should do a dissection of Shelley’s poem “Ozymandias.” While it’s a fantastic poem by itself, it has also been referenced in several major television shows and films over the last decade: Breaking Bad, Watchman, Alien: Covenant, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs just to name a few. It’s an incredible poem with a universal message. You’d do a great job analyzing it.

As a reporter, I covered hearings and trials in this courtroom in the late '70s and early '80s, including a similar controversial murder case that had the same outcome. For folks in Marquette, MI, and the surrounding communities where it was shot, the film has a beloved status. The film has the benefit of the source material's solid underpinnings -- John Voelker (pen name Robert Traver) was a local attorney who went on to become a Michigan Supreme Court justice, but gave that up to return to the Upper Peninsula to write and fly fish for trout. Preminger was smart enough to bring the production to the actual community and courthouse where the case that inspired the novel was actually tried.

I can't decide whether or not this is the greatest courtroom drama, or Billy Wilder's "Witness for Prosecution." Both had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. I believe courtroom dialogue is the most difficult dialogue to write, and a courtroom the most difficult to block. Great video as always; I really hope you do more hyper-analyzing on golden age area of cinema films.

My adoption by an aunt and uncle was finalized in that courthouse and my aunt/mother was an extra in some of the courtroom scenes. The scene in which Stewart and O'Connell lunch with coal dock operations in the background was shot about 50 yards from where I caught my first fish.

I think this is what makes Anatomy of a Murder so disturbing too - nothing matters *but* the performance. Innocence or guilt (or even the lawyer's fee at the end!) remain elusive, and of little importance to any character in the film.
It is not just words however. The other great scene is the one in which the youthful appearance of the Army doctor is met with disappointment because although he is spoken of as being the best possible doctor, he looks too young and fresh-faced to make the jury feel confidence in him, at least in the opinion of Biegler needing to use that image for the performance being put on. (And of course Mrs Manion is told to not act provocatively during the trial because it might jeopardise her husband's case if she is seen frequenting bars too much whilst he is in jail for a revenge murder)

One of the things I find interesting about this film is that it was surprisingly candid about the legal profession for that era. Legal loopholes and dirty tricks happen on both sides. No one is innocent - not the accused, or the lawyers. Law as a game, if you like. Anyway I agree it's a great movie.

I have long put this at the top of my list of lawyer-trial movies. Amazingly, very few people know it including lawyer friends of mine including trial lawyers. Omitted facts about this great movie: the Judge was played by Joseph Welch who famously confronted Joe McCarthy with the famous "At last, Senator, have you lost all sense of decency..." The other fact about Anatomy worth noting was that Duke Ellington has an extended cameo.

I have to say that I am really impressed that someone your age appreciates this movie and also Jimmy Stewart in it. Been a while since I've seen this but have to take another look at it. I also liked "Witness to the prosecution" which had a little surprise in it and the filmmakers did an amazing job at hiding the clue they showed on the screen. I would love to see you analyze "The Hustler" as his character arc is interesting and frankly a great movie and cast too and let's not forget Paul Newman's "Verdict" is a great one too. The one Preminger movie I really want to see is "Advise & Consent" but hard to find online or expensive to buy.

Hi, I totally agree with what you said. And talking about The Hustler, that's a movie I always want to watch but still haven't, will do recently I think :D I've watched Advise & Consent several times, alone and with friends. I think it's one of Preminger's best films, not entirely a courtroom drama but the dialogue and ensemble performance are just so elegant. If you still have trouble finding it online, leave me a contact address, I can share you the video file in my pc :)

Dear Evan, I thoroughly enjoyed this video because of its focus on the importance of communication and words. You have done quite a few videos now with the focus on that matter and even thoug you come from a different discipline, I like those focussing on rhetoric the most and I am quite impressed by your observations. Watching this one, I wondered: are you familiar with the rhetorical concept of topoi/loci? You did link your observation to it by saying "every word is loaded with history" and so on. If not, maybe that could be interesting and enriching for you. Keep it up und do more on rhetoric and communication! All the best from Germany!

“I think Anatomy of a murder is the best courtroom drama ever made.” Twelve Angry Men would like a word with you.

    • @akishorekumarr

I would not consider 12 Angry Men to be a courtroom drama. While, it is certainly related to a courtroom, there are some important differences. There are rules to what you can and cannot say in a courtroom. These restrictions are what makes a courtroom drama. 12 Angry men is a Jury discussion with none of these restrictions. That's why I don't think 12 Angry men can be considered a courtroom drama.
I agree that if I have to choose, 12 Angry Men is the better movie.

I'll be honest, I only know Jimmy Stewart from "It's a Wonderful Life" and I had no idea that was him until you said his name, at which point I immediately recognized his voice, although it sounds quite a bit different in this. The clips are enthralling, and your explanation makes it even more interesting. I'd love to see you talk about other great movies he was in, or other good movies from this era. I haven't watched many of these older movies but as time goes on I find them more and more interesting.
    Thanks!

The novel was written by Robert Traver, a pen name for John D. Voelker, who was a sitting Michigan Supreme Court Justice when the film was released. The story was based on a case he had defended while in private practice. Jimmy Stewart’s character was even closer to Voelker than the character in the novel. Voelker was somewhat infamous on the Supreme Court for occasionally issuing orders and opinions in rhyming verse.
