- In late 2016 I visited a motoring museum outside Birmingham, England. Its there that Jaguar Land Rover operate the world's finest collection of British motor vehicles at the British Motor Museum.
Included in the display are British cars through the ages, and demonstrates Britain's signifiant contribution to world motoring.
My particular interest is four-wheel drive, so this is where I spent my time, looking at the Land Rovers and Range Rovers of yesteryear.

What beautiful vehicles!!! Those Land Rovers from the early days are just stunning. They just scream adventure and wild places.
I still use my 1975 S3 for woodland management, and love using her as a daily driver for short runs also.
No power steering, no servo assisted brakes, but a visceral driving experience which puts a smile on my face every time.
The new Landys would be better described as Road Rovers indeed. But it's Series all the way for me, and off road repairing deer fencing, nothing can beat Gigi the 49 year old S3
Could you imagine the sales success if LR were to re-release the Original Range Rover today with just enough kitt to get past emissions and safety regs... Man, sign me up! Same everything, just updated enough to pass regulation muster.
Land Rovers have been sold in Australia from the beginning. Going by the chassis numbers, the Land Rover Andrew showed was number one. Number three was originally sold in Perth Western Australia and is still there. There are still a number of the very early Land Rovers in Australia. At one time the largest private fleet (IIRC over 200 vehicles) of Land Rovers in the world was owned by the Snowy Mountain Hydro Electricity Authority in Australia and used in the construction of the hydro scheme.
Land Rover history, so nice too see them, sad that they don't make a Defender any more, but I have one and it is a joy to have and use everyday.

I agree the E-type Jaguar has to be the world's most beautiful car. The second would be a Series 1 107'' wheel base Land Rover.
Great video and nice to see so much of LR heritage preserved, just a shame there will be no more heritage to come, a sad time indeed.
One point though, the grey tracked Cuthbertson at 7.13 didn't cross the Bering Straight, that was a white 110 with inflatables attached.
Thank you so much for this video, I have always wanted to see the British Motor Museum, and even though this wasn't a very thorough look it has definitely satisfied one of my itches for now, what a beautiful collection of vehicles and I hope to be able to go and visit myself someday.
and not a mention of the discovery, probably one one the most accessible to everyday folk land rover out there. oh well, still love your vids, Andrew, as I realise you have a passion for the range rovers
Andrew the 101 has heavy duty Dana/Salisbury style axles which are unique to it and have a 5.7:1 ratio. The engine and gearbox was the 3.5l v8 and LT95 gearbox you will probably be familiar with but with a lower ratio gear set in the transfer box. Loving the videos keep up the hard work :)

Gerry McGovern has said that the new Defender will become the 'adventure' pillar in the Land Rover brand, with Discovery and Range Rover focusing more on the luxury market. I doubt we'll ever see anything like the iconic Landies of yesteryear, but I remain hopeful that they won't completely turn their backs on that heritage.
When I hear news from the inside of LR, that the new Defender will have a 'glass cockpit', and that it will have 20" rims, it doesn't fill me with hope.
It sounds like a family of vehicles will be offered, the top end of which I'm sure will include something with enormous rims and maybe even an SVR badge. Whatever happens, I'll be taking extra good care of my Defender because for better or worse we won't see anything like it again.

Excellent commentary and film! You won't get that walking tour there. They have off-highway rides nearby on a course for people to get the feeling of off-road ability.
Great video, I never managed to get to the BMM but I did get to the NMM in Australia that is housed in the rather unlikely little town of Birdwood in South Australia. If you are ever over that way have a look, it will surprise you.

Growing up In East africa Tanzania, we have always had a land rover in the family. In some sort It is part of the family. hearing that they were and already halted the production of the defender, the news came as of passing of A fellow Family member. We Currently have a 1995 single cab tdi 300 i hope my kids will enjoy it just as much as i did!
It's wonderful to see all these fantastic cars but sad that they won't be driven again

the path they are taking is getting far from Land and getting more Rover.

hello how are you, just like you I am a big fan of the Range Rover Classic, I always wanted to ask if there are more complete videos of the Darien Gap crossing, additionally you can explain to me where the fenders changed when they placed tires for large measure , the fenders are cut and then in other images they are seen again with their original fenders

Hi Andrew, a slight correction on the 101. It has sailsbury axels front and rear, much stronger than the Range Rover.

Just a small correction: the Land Rover 101 had Salisbury axles front and rear, not Range Rover axles.

That is a very nice museum of all things British. My dad had a Morgan 2+2 and my mom had a Jaguar XK140. Some day I wish to visit England again and I will definitely stop by this museum.

Gary Mcgovern and the recent management has made some really lousy decisions,killing off Defender without a replacement gave Toyota and Mercedes the prize on a Platter.The last mass customer was Pakistan Army,I worked for LR and it was a tough battle beating competition to get first order of 1400 90 series ,followed by another 2500 127 troop cariers which were assembled in Karachi in the old Vauxhall factory.Australian Army abandoned LR and now uses G Wagen and Unimog,Toyota still making and selling the base Cruiser like hot cakes,they even offer it with V8 Diesel.The new Discovery looks like a Rav4,how many million were wasted developing that pointless convertible Evoqe?Could have spent that on better quality control! The Range Rover name lost its prestige aura when they tagged the Evoqe as a wannabe RR.

The original one was scrapped decades ago. Dunsfold has a replica (I think two replicas exist but I don't know where the other one is) but Gaydon doesn't have one. They do have R.01 (Hue) which is pre-production number one.

sadly, jeep is just as bad now
jeeps nowerdays are still capable, just as toyota is. but the money needed to make it that way has quadroupled
Griffon Racing land rover are still capable too
Toyota is in a class of it's own, some Jeep's have reliability issues, even when used on the road. My old XJ never had any though.

I can't believe, when i was looking for my first car, the E-Type Jag was around $13,000 AUD on the second hand market, i thought they were ugly vehicles, and hence the cheap price.
I no longer find them ugly, nor do i find them for $13,000 AUD :(
Another great vídeo, Andrew. However, the first panamerican overland (including Darien Gap Cross) were made by 3 brazilians that start from Rio de Janeiro in 1928 to Washington DC in 1938, in 2 Ford T! They were received by Franklin Roosevelt and Henry Ford. One of the cars, could be see at the Transportation Museum, in São Paulo.
That may be true. But these were the very first to drive from the furthest northern point in North America to the southern most point of South America.
+4xOverland Why did they take the exhaustpipe ut to the roof?
Nelson Brügger so the car could sit in a couple of meters of water for hours (probably whilst stuck) and there was no risk of the water back pressure on the exhaust gas stalling the engine.
Hi Andrew, I know its to ask too much, but, could you do a video about in what cases is mandatory to upgrade suspension? I just bought my "new" 2009, 3 door Patrol Y61 and is completely stock. Is my daily driver, and I love to take it off road (nothing really hardcore) as much as I can, so I wonder if I really need to upgrade it to be more capable off road, or the stock is just fine. :D Cheers!
It all depends on what you do.. but if you want to go off road get some AT or MT tires (depending on where you live and where you go).. everything after that is pretty much extra.. there is no need to spend a load of cash on upgrades to get out there and explore.
thank you, it's basically what I had on mind. I know that there will be a thousand things I will want to do to it, and I will do some, but, to just start... that was my plan, bf Goodrich and my hiking boots!
+Miguel duran lopez we didn't get 3 door Y61 Patrols in Australia, so I assume they are shorter wheelbase than the 5 door wagon and single cab Y61 here. The Y61 is very capable offroad standard, but a suspension lift is beneficial improving the approach, departure and break-over angles. And tyres to suit your terrain.
John Do I know you didn't get the 3 door model down there. it is cool and has a better break over angle for being shorter, but I would love the space of the station wagon. thanks for the comments, I will probably do some suspension upgrades in the future, but, for now... I will keep it simple.
Nice video as always. I don't have enough information regarding Land Rovers, but you referred to the LandRover shown in 4:52 as the 'first land Rover' (preproduction). However, the one in 5:45 (1949) looks so much older. By the 'first LandRover,' did you mean oldest Land Rover or the oldest of that specific model?
Aref Eshghi the first Land Rover (4:52) it literally the first one ever HUE166 was built in 1948, the other one was a slightly later model that didn't sell very well, a slightly more family oriented series 1, it was built at a similar time to HUE166, but HUE166 is literally the very first Land Rover ever made:)

Actually the very first Land Rover had a center mounted steering wheel. So the one claimed to be the first isn't.
Aref Eshghi you are right early concept ideas had a central mounted steering wheel but the idea was shelved before they started building full pre production cars to test. A couple of series 1s have been re-made to the original central drive idea, but I don't believe any Rover designed central drive full cars exist. But HUE166 is the first real full car, the first one to get a registration plate and be road legal. HUE166 is the first Land Rover.
Edward Purkis No it's not. The first Ferrari the first Harley Davidson the first Corvette were all "prototype vehicles" but are still considered the "First of there kind". Land Rover built the Centre Drive so therefore it is the FIRST Land Rover.
Please correct me if my information is wrong. Did not the first two Land Rovers use Jeep chassis? I love the Range Rover commercials inspiring people to join in on a safari!
++lencost++ This is yet another myth perpetuated by the americans. Maurice Wilkes looked at all sorts of vehicles chassis including Jeep, Humber Motors and Rover Cars before designing the ladder chassis used in the early series one Land Rover. The Jeep chassis was considered unsuitable for a number of reasons and never used.

The centre steer was on a modified jeep chassis, but after that they used their own chassis.

No Discoveries appear in the museum at all, and very few in the private collection.
That's too bad. I think it should have its place in the museum because of the Camel Trophy and G4 editions. Still another great video, Andrew. Keep up the great work.
We are going to disagree here. I think, until the LR3, it was the worst. IMHO. Not as nice to own (by far) than the RR classic, a cramped, ergonomic mess. Discovery-2 was better, but compared to Pajero, LC80 and similar priced wagons, very cramped and over-complicated. The LR4 was by far, the best Discovery built (and one of the best SUVs anywhere), but now the Discovery just looks like a Kia. I haven't driven it yet, but its probably brilliant.

+speterbilt Land Rover and Jaguar changed hands several times. Because they were suffering financially the British Gov't formed a large number of small manufacturers into a larger British Leyland group. Land Rover were probably the most successful their profits propping up the others, but not put into Land Rover R&D, which should have occurred. Leyland was eventually split-up with Land Rover and Jaguar sold to British Aerospace (BA).
BA sold Land Rover and Jaguar to BMW. Then BMW sold them to Ford. The Land Rover Discovery saved Land Rover, but otherwise neither BMW or Ford did a lot for Land Rover or Jaguar.
Finally Ford sold them to the Indian company Tarta, who did invest in them and they have turned around achieving great success. The best thing that has happened to Land Rover.

When Land Rover was Land Rover. Now just an overpriced crossover. Even the new Defender is no longer made in Solihull. What a shame it is seeing what Land Rover is today, in contrast to its glorious past.
With the greatest respect, I have to disagree with your statement about "landrover not building off road vehicles anymore". Have a look at the Disco 4 and 5. Nothing else comes close to refinement and off road ability. I have driven the Discovery 4 in the aussie outback and Spain's Sierra Nevada - amazing cars. They make the job of 4x4 adventure so easy (relatively). Best regards
It's like a bad dream, they have ruined Land Rover, the new Defender looks about to flop, especially now the Bronco has been shown and will undercut it significantly in the US , I thought we had a shot with the Grenadier but their use of a BMW engine (why not a simple Iveco or Isuzu?) and talk of French production has lost a lot of interest.
