  • This video is a rough walk through of how to plan and create custom inserts for any vivarium, terrarium, or aquarium. I apologize for the long winded talking at times, this really wasn't going to be posted, but after several request here it is. Remember to research your reptiles needs before building, and have fun!

    What I like is the basic set up of environment. Open, lots of caves, nice colors, realistic. Nice job you did 👌👍😊

    The 15 dislikes are dragons who didn't get to live in this amazing vivarium.

    it was all made out of non-coated 3/4 in mdf, top and bottom was 8x3 sides were 3x3, I drilled pilot holes used wood glue and 1 1/2 in. wood screws then sealed the inside edges with silicone, the outside edges with wood putty, and sealed the inside mdf with mod podge after painting the sky scene.
    hope this helps, and happy building

      Was this constructed out of one sheet of mdf?

    • @brianhayden4454
      @brianhayden4454  8 років тому

      This Viv took 4 sheets of MDF to complete, the size I believe was 8x3x3 (might have been 6 ft, this project was awhile ago) but if you build your typical 4x2x2 you should be able to get away with 2 sheets of MDF (if everything is cut properly) :)

    Awesome job. I plan on building one this summer. Any way you can show how you did the glass. That's the one thing I'm confused on how to do. Also a final picture of the sand hole in the middle would be cool

    hi love the video beautifully done vivarium, but tell me how did you make bridge and for it to be strong enough for a fully grown beardy. I'm looking to do a form of this bridge but want it to be as strong as possible. thanks in advance. I'm also going to grout my setup but then concrete it with 3 layers 3rd layer being thickest then paint it then use a non toxic concrete sealer.

    Very nice job, looks great! Is that sealed foam/grout base suitable for the corn snakes or do you need to put an additional substrate on top? Is it hard to clean up too?

  • @2.6.0
    @2.6.0 8 років тому +4

    And what is the paint he is using for the final coats?

    • @brianhayden4454
      @brianhayden4454  8 років тому +1

      Not sure of the "Grub" lol it was awhile ago... Maybe Mod Podge? that is what I used to seal the inside of the viv, and what I used after painting the inside... It is a water based non toxic sealer and safe for your pets :)... As far as paint, I used acrylic (water based and non toxic) which I got from Michaels (I got the Mod Podge from there as well) and for the outside I just got the run of the mill latex paint from Home Depot and sealed it with polyurethane.

    Will the dragons nails go thrubthe styrofoam and when u build the ledges are they strong enough to hold the weight of the adragon mine is about 14"

    • @taoutdoors8110
      @taoutdoors8110 5 років тому

      You have to seal the foam and then groat it (it's like a paint) and both of these steps harden, prolong, and make the styrofoam safe!

      Zilla has PVC enclosures. You can also look into which material you want since melamine is pretty inexpensive but heavy to move

    • @zesprixx
      @zesprixx 8 років тому

      Wouldnt disinfecting them be required? For any bugs living on the wood or rocks that may carry parasites?

    • @temmink2012
      @temmink2012 8 років тому

      Pug
      well give m a scrub and the tortoises live in nature too right ? any outdoor pen would encounter the same bugs...

    • @zesprixx
      @zesprixx 8 років тому

      ***** Yeah id imagine wild animals are immune to the parasites, captive bred can die from eating wild insects. But it would be less likely for tortoises of course because they dont eat insects unlike lizards and other reptiles. But i agree, natural tanks are great but a disinfect would keep us on the safe side

    • @temmink2012

      true ! so thats why i scrub rocks under hot water and dont use wood...but i bought life grass rolls at the garden centre and the laid outside so guess some bugs will be there but in my garden too and she walks all summer outside...and i cant clean my yard ;-)

      I have used real rock and wood in a couple builds (I always soak in a 50/50 bleach water mix, then bake int the oven for a good hour). couple things I don't like about the real thing is safety and cleaning. When you get heavier lizards that climb a lot stones tend to shift, and I've seen many people (even pro's) lose their pets from being crushed. ( I always recommend gluing rocks in place) and cleaning and disinfecting becomes a nightmare as well. Another type to consider if you want to go completely natural is doing a bio-active vivarium, where you have a living ecosystem. These look cool and I see the benefit of creating a system like this (If you have a huge viv. but I have heard creating and maintaining a system like this can be extremely challenging.
      I am planning on attempting my largest personal build here in the next few months, 12X4X4 I think lol. I plan on doing a mixture of real and artificial elements, I guess we shall see how it goes :)
