  • Today we have a customer that requested a brake fluid replacement. Not all brake fluid replacements are equal and you get what you pay for - see my other video for directions on lifting the car and putting it in service mode

Mate never seen a single mechanic bleed brakes by removing just the fluid in reservoir. In 20+ years never seen it before .

How do you determine if the brake fluid needs to be replaced? So the fluid in the reservoir does not move through the whole system?

There’s test kits that check for moisture content and copper content. This system is a hydraulic system and so fluid doesn’t circulate like a coolant system. So fluid typically stays stagnant, more so in Teslas. You need fluid in the reservoir bc as your brake pads wear down, fluid in the reservoir will get low

@@JaysGarageRaleigh1 Yes, I have done those test strips on the fluid in the reservoir. It's probably time to get it replaced for me.

How often do you need to change the fluid?

A rule of thumb is typically every 30k miles or 2 years. BMW REQUIRES this system be flushed every 2 years. Tesla wants you to check for moisture content every 2 years. Keep in mind, this is the EXACT SAME fluid as BMW. Kias and Hyundais have no recommendations on this. So goes to show you need to do your own research. Manufacturers care too much about the JD Power rating for low cost of ownership and they don’t care as long as components last the warranty period.
