Was it not?? I grew up in that era, 80's/90's -- can't remember
it being #1 as such, but it got a lot of air time on the radio. I wonder

She married an Australian record producer circa 2012 and they've been living there since. She did a tour of regional centres in NSW from about March 2019 to Sept same year but unfortunately didn't come to Sydney where I live. A real bummer that.

I was in my late teens and her voice was mesmerizing. Everytime I here it now I cringe at the bad late 80s synth-pop sounding instruments. I have said for years that I would love to hear her vocals put over less "processed" sounding instruments.

I know she became very popular in New Zealand during her career, but once again, we Americans missed the boat on someone who was/is certainly an extraordinary singer/songwriting supertalent, but never got the credit she deserved. Ripping out the root of love
Tell me now what is in my heart
The kind of lies that have torn us apart
You lay down in the road
    Baring your bloody soul
    Don't need no satisfaction
    Guaranteed my main attraction
Ripping love out by the roots
Though my ghost is still with you
It hurts to watch you turn away
So I'm tearing out the truth
    Don't walk away
Ripping out the root of love
    Don't walk away
Ripping out the root of love
    Don't walk away
Ripping out the root of love
    Don't walk away
Ripping out the root of love
Time passes slowly, time passes on
Waiting for my man to call
When there's no man at all
    Do I stand here waiting
For the earth to turn to dust
    Give up my passion
    Rendering my lust
    Or do I walk away
    Don't walk away
Ripping out the root of love
    Don't walk away
Ripping out the root of love
Ripping out the root of love
Ripping out the root of love
    Don't walk away
Ripping out the root of love
    Don't walk away
Ripping out the root of love
    Don't walk away
Ripping out the root of love
    Don't walk away
Ripping out the root of love
Ripping love out by the roots
Though my ghost is still with you
It hurts to watch you turn away
So I'm tearing out the truth
    Don't walk away
Ripping out the root of love
    Don't walk away
Ripping out the root of love
    Don't walk away
Ripping out the root of love
    Don't walk away
Ripping out the root of love
It hurts to watch you turn away
So I'm tearing out the truth

I am just discovering Toni's music because Spotify's editors put one of my songs on a playlist with hers. I don't think we are similar, but I am grateful to be considered in the same room with her :).

Seems like American record labels just don't know what time do with rock women with powerhouse voices.
Sass Jordan, Leona Lewis, Florence Welch all come to mind.
