Putting Vocals Through Guitar Pedals for Great Home Studio Recordings

- We'll run Vocals through various Guitar Pedals including Digitech Whammy, Carl Martin TremO'Vibe, Berhinger Tremolo UT100, digitech Polara Reverb, Boss Phase Shifter PH-3, Hexe Revolver, Memory Boy Deluxe, TC Electronics Triple Delay.
Holy snot, I love Guitar Pedals, but I love running Vocals through Guitar Pedals more. Vocals are the most universal instrument from one person to another, and while I don't particularly like sharing my vocals actually making the recordings and practicing them etc is the most natural of all to me anyway. At this point I want to put some time into making a vocal pedalboard for live vocalists, because the needs are a bit different.
My biggest point would be that processing pre-pedals is important. I've heard of the Voco-Loco, and it seems like a perfect solution for live applications, but I can't say that it's necessary for recording applications. Knowing how to mix your vocals is also a huge help here, as a live sound guy I've seen a lot of vocalists with vocal pedals that slather their vocals in reverb and delay and it becomes basically impossible to hear what they're even saying, a light touch is advised unless you want to be super in the audience's face.
Out of all the pedals my favorite guitar pedal is the Hexe Revolver. I love all the glitches, and I feel like they make the biggest difference as far as vocal effects along with the Digitech Whammy.
Vocal effects and guitar effects are basically the same thing they just tend to focus on different things. I've found that guitar effects tend to be more adventurous, but you're just a conversion or two away from getting your vocals in there.

Any suggestions for other pedals that are great on vocals?
I like using a chorus pedal on vocals. I tried it years ago and it works well for certain songs.
@@baneverything5580 obviously you HAVE to use it when singing the chorus
I would love to hear the walrus audio slo verb and the old blood modulation verb!
I am dying to buy a grand canion and try it on vocals! you do seem all set when it comes to delay though.. keely caverns as well, hmm yum
I recently started looking Into the Flamma like the fv01 Fvo2 fv03 well you get the point and the Mic Mechanic 2 seems like it's cool also
i woke up today with the thought:
"HANG ON, WTF WOULD HAPPEN IF I PUT MY VOICE THROUGH A DIGITECH WHAMMY PEDAL"
And so 8 hours later, here i am on your video
Sick dude
Thanks Iroquois Pliskin, hope you subscribe, hoping to do a follow up to this video later in the summer!
These sounded really cool, obviously you'd struggle to fit these into more conventional songwriting but if you were doing something like industrial/ambient/experimental techno these would be great to build layers. Some of the sounds you got with the revolver would work brilliantly on something like a Nine Inch Nails track, or you could easily work these into some kind of Coil-esque noisy/creepy layerings.
I'm glad you explored non-verbal aspects like beatboxing too, I think a lot of these effects really shined in that regard. The sound you got whilst using the phaser could work really well as a rhythmic loop, it sort of reminded me of how Mike Shinoda approaches samples.
Great video.
Fun vid. Cool pedal selections.
Dude this is sick. Thanks for this. I'm going down the rabbit hole now. LOL
Fred durst did this with a lot his harsh vocals from 99-2003. I think he would hit a reverb pedal before belting screams and it gave it such cool color.
Reminds me of NIN’s rig where Trent had some midi controls on his mic stand to activate different effects like verb or delay etc
@@BGBSATX tront is lord and savior.
Tront
I'm very interested in trying this using the Flux Echo pedal by Horizon devices, seems it would make some neat vocal effects. What would be the suggested routing for someone with just an interface a mic and guitar pedal?
On modern whammy pedals tge rocker functions as a "blend" or " mix" knob for the detune , "chorus" effect.
Thanks for the cool demonstration. Now time for nerdy experiments.
I’ve really wanted to do a follow up on this, but atm my “experiments” more have to do with live application in non-musical environments (for dnd dm’s etc) and is less mind bending than practical.
But I would check this out, it’s an AI that listened to a bunch of human voices and made music, so it’s all vocals but like… not.

Holy hell I need that whammy!
This was cool I was looking Into getting some effects pedals for vocals and for my Korgs 👍 thanks
Depending on what generation of Korgs you’re using you may want to look into pedals that are midi-control-able. I know Knobs has a video or two about this sort of thing if that’s what you’re into.
@@BGBSATX I just watched your video on Vocal Guitar pedals earlier keep up the Good Work I see you have a Lot of Videos I will check more out this Morning and Thanks I have the Volkas mainly
@@BGBSATX I've been up entirely too Long and somehow thought this was a comment on a different video my bad 😂 but yes thanks for the info
Awesome Video...
Thanks for watching, hope you subscribed! Stay tuned, want to do a follow up late summwr
I'm like #130, Man entertaining and cool DEMO 💪🏼👏🏼👍🏼✌🏼 I cannot wait to start experimenting in my Music Laboratory 🙃🥸🤓
Thanks! I'm currently working on other projects but have been brainstorming a follow up to do eventually - the music lab takes up more time than anything, before I know it 3-4 hours can go by of just experimenting and I don't have anything resembling a final product
@@BGBSATX That's okay, research and development is always a vital part that doesn't receive the shine and glory like the final product but is a key step every time 😉💪🏼
Foamy the Squirrel voice at 2:47 takes me back to my childhood.
Also Alvin and the Chipmunks.
Actually used that pedal for a rapper recently
Do you use an xlr adapter to go from mic to stomp box? What's the best way to do that exactly?
Nice
what about a flanger pedal, like the boss flanger on vocals?
Hi! Could you help me? I want to speak with a clean smurf voice in a scenario. Which one is better?
I would use a pitch bending pedal like the whammy or a EHX pitch fork (on that one set the blend to 100%) and try an 2nd, 3rd or 4th bend depending on how low your voice is. A tiny bit of vibrato pedal couldn’t hurt either, the Berhinger vibrato would definitely do the trick and is way cheaper than the one on this video.
@@BGBSATX thanks a lot! I will try one of them! 🥰🥰🥰
Sadly the digitech polara is discontinued. Any recommendation for a substitute? I would like to up my Dungeon mastering a bit, and the whammy and the polara got me thinking.
Let me get back to you on that, I’ll do some research, but holy cow using pedals for dungeon mastering would be the coolest thing ever… I’d have to show my DM friends what we can come up with.
@@BGBSATX I mean, voice acting can take you far, especially IRL, but since the online-situ got real strong, why not impersonate an evil AI enemy for my players? Or a phone-call with an ally, distrupted by said AI? Or even an unearthy all powerful being? Countless opportunities. I mean a shape changing ancient dragons shape changes will be more... prominent if your voice can go from Hz - to the richter scale as it changes back to dragon form. Great vid btw, subbed!
Get one on Reverb
When you change your settings in csgo/any source game 7:03
I had to look that up, I didn't realize they finally made a new counter strike. Glad it doesn't look like Team fortress 2 though.
@@BGBSATX was made in 2012 lol 👌
that revolver pedal is so cool
Yeah man, I love that pedal, I’ve looked for others that can do that but come up empty handed. It’s a wee bit cantankerous and a bit wild, but nothing beats that sound
If your interested, my latest video also uses it
@@BGBSATX i saw it! i got the zoia pedal today and there’s so many cool patches online that has that cool glitch effect it’s so much fun.
what about a flanger pedal? like boss flanger
EHX Harmonix is my favvvvv
What will it beatboxing with lower octave
Any tips for live? I have a vocal processor but I like to run guitar effects after it but I’ve been losing so much signal. Should I use a DI box before mixer?
A clean boost for signal loss compensation and a 10 band EQ for feedback fighting would be a good idea. I have another video involving the Roland Voco Loco that would be worth a look.
😅 This is awesome.
I'm sad he didn't sing Crimson and Clover on the tremolo :(
So I could use a reamp box to sing through guitar pedals live?
Well, you need something to act as a pre-amp for the mic. In this video I used my studio interface and popped the signal out from it to the reamp box (I also put some EQ and compression on it before popping it to the reamp box).
To do this live you would either need to use a mixer with an insert jack (and something to adjust for the impedance change) or you can use something like the Radial Engineering Voco Loco which also has an fx loop.
I know TC electronic has some vocal pedals that could effectively act as pre-amps, but I’d think you would still need to account for the impedance change when you go to guitar pedals.
That polara pedal had me FUCKED up hahahaha
It’s a good pedal, I think they took some inspiration from the Space Station XP 300... and like the XP 300 it’s now discontinued so grab one before the prices go up too much higher!
5.48 Polara / David Gahan (Depeche Mode) :))))
Polara's effects are the same as Lexicon's. Sure enough, the studio where they recorded it had a Lexicon.
Came here for the Whammy Pedal demo...didn't see the chord option being used, left dissapointed.
6:00 is a halo theme for sure ahahahahh
Glad I got it right, I never got around to checking, thanks for watching!
@@BGBSATX lol
And I thought this was a legit video.
Te Kingston🙈
That's really cool and all,....HOW did you do it, that's all we care about
Literally like a minute in?
Follow up? 2 Digitech Whammys? 😝
Actually kinda happening on my synth pedal board
I hate repetitive sounds. So the tremolo vocals would annoy me in a big way! That's why I don't like that song "Tonight is going to be a good night". The stuttering vocals drive me crazy in the worst way!
Don't worry about the balanced vs unbalanced thing nobody gives a shit.
