  • In a nuanced response to landscape, Winter Creek is a modern house in a hidden forest - a seamless reflection of the expansive farm in which the home resides. SOS Architects draws on modernist design principles combined with subdued interiors by Studio Tom to create a dwelling that is clean, modern and considered so that it doesn't compete with the site but, instead, harmonises with it. Located in Trentham, Victoria, Winter Creek is a single-storey, contemporary home that nestles into the site. SOS Architects deeply considered the placement of the house to ensure it both complemented and responded to the site.
The architectural approach used for the modern house in a hidden forest was grounded in a contemporary, sleek design. The form of Winter Creek consists of two distinct volumes - a floating roof that connects to the landscape, which encompasses the main living zones, and the ‘flat box’ section that is more private and introspective, housing the bedrooms and bathrooms. A key feature of the design is also the transparency of the dwelling. At many intersections, one can see through the house, further connecting the home to the landscape.
The interior design approach was very much an extension of the architectural design, with Studio Tom collaborating with SOS Architects to create a modern house in a hidden forest that feels seamless and cohesive. The palette is subdued, dominated by charcoal, neutral and grey tones, and furnishings are minimalist and refined. These choices mean the interior continues the theme of blending into the misty, grey, wintery scenes typical of the landscape beyond.
Continuing the seamless aesthetic that defines this modern house in a hidden forest, the AbsoluteMatte range from Laminex was used throughout the interior. The versatile nature of the product allowed it to be used for the joinery, wall panelling and door skins. The mood created by the matte finish becomes palpable as the light bounces off its surface. This sense of harmony offers a poetic response to the home’s natural surrounds.
An inspiring collaboration, SOS Architects and Studio Tom bring the clients’ vision to life with an attention to detail and harmony that becomes tangible as you walk through the modern house in a hidden forest. By creating a home that co-exists with the surrounds, there is an awe-inspiring and calm feeling that immediately envelops those who enter.

Former Landscape Architect...Siting a building is an important step. This design successfully integrates the Built Environment with the surrounding Natural Environment. Use of High Ceilings, Oversized Floor to Ceiling Glass Walls, and Muted Colors allows the Outside and Inside to Flow between them easily. Interior Spaces are Open and Flow between Rooms. A simple Palette both Inside and Outside helps create a Calming Feeling. The lucky Inhabitants will enjoy this Masterpiece for years to come.

The Local Project is a special channel that epitomizes a focus on attention to detail. The recent focus on properties primarily covered in dark colors is intriguing from a viewer perspective. One can appreciate the change of wavelengths that the eye experiences when viewing such projects without dismissing the (potentially) unhealthy nature dark spaces present. Please consider incorporating properties featuring more life and light without compromising what makes your work so captivating.

A little too dark for me and funny how the architect loves “the way the light bounces off the absolute black” when really it sucks all the light up. Just look at the sconce in the hallway - it doesn’t light anything lol. I do love the land it sits in, though.

Just more proof that nonsensical salesman talk is not limited to real estate agents & car salesman. Architects will also use fancy but self-contradictory words if you pay them well enough. 😂

    • @geemail369

3:27 It is quite dark, no arguing about that. But the muted mood and unassuming features only add to its appeal imo.
1:40 just watch the wall pop to a shade of brown when the lights turn on - like! 👌🏻

Formally express what is what was going on within the house…. huh? What? Architecture jargons way out of control here. It’s just a clean space with some bits of nice furniture. What’s there to express and what’s really going on within it?

It's strange, throughout the whole video I didn't get any real sense of the layout of the house or how the spaces related to each other (probably because a lot of the video was focused on discussing laminate) but I also didn't get any sense of what the laminate was made of or how it looked close-up (other than it was matte black).
Was it a video for the house or the laminate?

Gorgeous but would love to curate a different art collection for the space. The single painting contributes towards a bit of a psychological downward spiral.😌In my opinion, replacing the existing work with a minimal display of few vibrant pieces with nature themes or adding to the current exhibition with pieces expressing a diverse range of personality, color, texture, and emotions would balance against the minimal, clean, de-saturated design of this space.
