It's interesting how Julian takes a break and look away (while having some beer) to let the whole audience atention focus on Nick's riff; it's amazing the work of each one and then the whole, is just great.
Pretty sure he just wanted a sip of beer and that was the best time, being a break in the vocals. But Julian does have great stage presence. He wanders all around the stage with style.

I was blessed to have seen The Strokes play with The White Stripes in NYC in 2002. Julian Casablancas was a pure genius. I was in New York City art scene in 2000, 2001 and I remember the buzz on the street about this band and others in the NYC scene were blowing up. People don't realize but September 11th has a big part in this because all these things were happening in NYC at the time - I remember saying to a buddy after 9-11 that now everyone's gonna come to NYC and they did. It just so happened that the kids in the underground art and music scenes in NYC in 2001/2002 were the ones helping heal the youth of the city from within. We had Interpol, Liars, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Radio 4, Black Dice, The Strokes, on and on. Nothing like being a 25 year old in NYC in 2001 and discovering this band, The Strokes. They changed everything. By 2003, all the original scenesters left and we ended up with... a ton of hipster knock-off noise and the new Williamsburg scene.

This song is a crazy masterpiece. I'll tell you why, the part where he's talking about all this effort "trying to catch your eye", he sings it with no effort, there's no effort being seen through his actions in the live performances and also in his voice. Thats why it's so fantastic. I cannot express how much, thought has gone into this song, it's crazy.
I guess you're right, there's no evidence that his performance is intended to mean that. Still, I like to think its true as it's a really cool play on the song :)
I think it's a masterpiece of composition and balance. It's a subtle rock tune, but that slow build just piles tension on itself, and explodes. It just chugs along, with lyrics that keep your attention as if he's just telling you a story in convo. Then that solo rips through w major attitude. Every little piece of this song compliments. It sounds like it was thought out over time, to sound plain and simple. Julian is a killer song writer. Any good musician can play these parts, but not many people put songs together as well as he does. Not to take anything away from the other guys, because as a live act, they're irreplaceable. But, Jules is the quiet genius.
This is some of the most guitar‑centric music you'll ever hear: The fuzzed mid‑volume vocals really lets the music guitars dominate the songs, which is great because Nick and Albert's riffs are so well‑woven together. It's like The Cars blended with Black Sabbath, yet with a Cobain-Lennon coolness fusion and punk attitude.
I admire The Strokes beyond words. People say that multiple artists relate to them through their music. Personally, this band is probably the one I relate to more than any other band/artist out there by a long stretch.

I thought it was hype and then I heard this song and was hypnotized by it. It sounded like a classic Lou Reed track reimagined, not a cheap copy but a truly vibrant and young nod to authentic rock n roll. Then I heard him shout that Little Richard "wooooooo!" on the second verse and it brought a tear to my eye. It's such a classic rock'n'roll signifier that sounded so beautifully out of place in a time when the radio was dominated by limp bizkit. To me, that "woooo!" is the moment rock and roll came back for me.

“Up on a hill, here’s where we begin/This little story, a long time ago” Maybe New York City isn’t technically a hill and maybe 14 years isn’t so long ago, but, excepting that, the opening line from “The Modern Age” could serve double-duty as the first words in the story of The Strokes. After all, the song was the title track and one of three songs included on the EP the band released in 2001 that set off a bidding war for their services and cranked up the hype machine to deafening levels. It also is one of the most memorable tracks on the band’s debut album Is This It, an album that somehow managed to exceed that hype. The Strokes’ sound, which combined the ramshackle attitude of garage rock with the arched-eyebrow posturing of art rock in striking fashion, receives a lot of that credit for the band’s success. But that sound wouldn’t have meant quite as much if it weren’t attached to memorable songs courtesy of lead singer Julian Casablancas. “The Modern Age” is a fine example of this alchemy. Chunky staccato guitars in the intro eventually open up into a buoyant bass line from Nikolai Fraiture and stomping drums from Fabrizio Moretti. Nick Valensi takes off on a searing guitar solo in the middle portion of the song, yet the melody in the chorus balances that out with its melancholic chord changes. Casablancas’ vocals contain that same kind of variety, as he trades off between dejected monotone and animated braying, like some unholy cross between Ian Curtis and Jim Morrison. The lyrics also can’t decide whether they want rhapsodize about some idealized afternoon in the sun or moan about the peripatetic nature of 21st-century life. Along the way, Casablancas’ lines, seemingly tossed off and nonchalant, start to draw blood. “Stop to pretend, stop pretending/It seems this game is simply never-ending,” he sings, seeming to reference the chasm between childhood playfulness and adult seriousness that the young-at-heart futilely try to bridge. When he sings, “Work hard and say it’s easy,” it’s an interesting theory for this at-the-time budding rock star to put forth: that the appearance of nonchalance may be crucial to success, but the practice of it is career suicide. Through the song a loose story about the narrator trying to shake free from a clinging suitor runs, but “The Modern Age” is after bigger fish than that, as evidenced by the song’s title. The pleasures are ephemeral (“No time to feel the breeze”), the coping mechanisms are numbing (“I took too many varieties”), and, when you can’t make it work, it’s best just to bail and try again another day (“Tomorrow may be different/So this Is why I’m leaving.”) Speaking about his band’s enduring popularity in a 2014 Rolling Stone interview, Casablancas shook off the plaudits. “It feels humbling and validating that you’re doing some things right,” he said. “But it’s the same thing with an actor: If a movie does really well at the box office, they make 10 of those afterward because that’s what they think people like. . . . If something has commercial value, it doesn’t mean it’s good.” False modesty and indifferent cool is all well and good, but many have tried to copy The Strokes formula in the wake of Is This It and have fallen well short. And the story the band started with “The Modern Age” still enthralls.

The Strokes - The modern age
Up on a hill is where we begin
This little story a long time ago
Stop to pretend, stop pretending
It seems this game is simply never-ending
Oh, in the sun, sun having fun
It's in my blood
I just can't help it
Don't want you here right now
Let me go, oh, let me g-g-g-g-g-g-go
Leavin' just in time
Stay there for a while
Rolling in the ocean
Trying to catch her eye
Work hard and say it's easy
Do it just to please me
Tomorrow will be different
So I'll pretend I'm leaving
Our fears are different here
We train in A-V-A
I wish you hadn't stayed
My vision's clearer now, but I'm unafraid
Flying overseas, no time to feel the breeze
I took too many varieties
Oh, in the sun, sun having fun
It's in my blood
I just can't help it
Don't want you here right now
Let me go
Darling let me g-g-g-g-g-g-go
Leaving just in time
Staying for a while
Rolling in the ocean
Trying to catch her eye

We didnt have cell phones in our faces 24/7 back in my day. Ya know. 20 years ago lol
If you're listening to this in June 2020 or beyond, you got my vote.
It's in my blood I just can't help it
Constantly come back to watch the music video...the song on platforms like Spotify just don’t sound the same..
@@2ImJoshua this is the live version, I highly suggest watching their 2002 mtv concert of Is This It, they blow the already amazing album that Is This It out of the water.
Sorry ,it's August
When is this calendar silly thing going to stop? We are all listening during this lockdown, a lot of people are here during this 2020 for obvious reasons, what's next: the "nobody..." comment or the "hold my beer" joke?
2024. I never knew what they looked like until earlier today. My OH My! Lead singer is really really ridiculously good looking.
I think a lot of people agree with that one lol!!
Legit one of my favorite live performances ever. I kinda like more than the album version.
Same

Yo, we're a beginning indie rock band and we've just released a new song: stookvogel.bandcamp.com/track/dried-out-land We'd really appreciate it if you take a listen
+Stookvogel not bad at all guys, keep up like that !! sounds really good (y)
Rest easy in paradise Matt I miss you so much brother. You introduced me to many great bands but the strokes are by far the hardest to listen to, way to much memories. It's been six years
I am so sorry for you 😢💔❤️🩹
The Strokes til the end of my days yo.
I agree with gandalf
The Rolling Beat .. humming and Rolling..
1:05 I literally played it 20 times I just love him when he says pretendin
the chorus of this specific version of this song breaks my heart in the best way possible
i feel you man, i always listen to this version rather than the studio recorded one, because the tempo is a bit slower and albert's guitar can be heard much better during the chorus

It always blows my mind how they can create so much from so little. Their sound is like a wall of bricks that just hit you in the face.
😂😂❤😂😂
Love the Velvet Underground/Lou Reed influence on this one. Strokes are incredible
Honestly does sound like him!
2:04 God bless this dude
Ahh this damn album is flooded with memories, it makes me so sad and happy at the same time. Too bad I could never stop listening to the strokes or I'd be spared of the feels.
I can't get enough of this song.
3 bands I absolutely fell in love with for no reason whatsoever and loyally stuck with for years on the rawness of their talent, like no other bands before or since:
1. Radiohead (aged 17)
2. Wilco (20)
3. The strokes (25)

( look up this song - faceless humming by the impures ) __________ is good :)

One of my favorite guitar solos of all time
This song makes me sad by 0:11, super sad by 0:21, and really fucking sad by 0:28.
I love it!
+Jesse James Atencio
The chorus breaks your heart
I saw them in 2002 with The White Stripes in New York City. I was 27 years old. Ya had to be there. Greatest times, man!
Chorus always gets me emotional 🔥
Up on a hill, here's where we begin Leaving just in time, stay there for a while
Rollin' in the ocean, tryin' to catch her eye
Work hard and say it's easy, do it just to please me
Tomorrow will be different, so I'll pretend I'm leaving
[Guitar Solo]
[Verse 2]
I feel so different now, we trained at A-V-A
I wish you hadn't stayed, my vision's clearer now but I'm unafraid
Flyin' overseas, no time to feel the breeze
I took too many varieties
[Pre-Chorus]
Oh, in the sun, sun, havin' fun, it's in my blood
I just can't help it
Don't want you here right now, let me go, woo!
Darling, let me g-g-g-g-g-g-g-go
[Chorus]
Leaving just in time, stay there for a while
Rollin' in the ocean, tryin' to catch her eye
Work hard and say it's easy, do it just to please me
Tomorrow will be different, so this is why I'm leavin'
This little story, a long time ago
Start to pretend, stop pretendin'
It seems this game is simply never-endin'
[Pre-Chorus]
Oh, in the sun, sun, havin' fun, it's in my blood
I just can't help it
Don't want you here right now, let me go
Oh, let me g-g-g-g-g-g-g-go
Nicks playing in this song is just phenomenal
Am I the only one who stumbled across them (especially these videos) and thought, damn, another 70s punk band I missed the boat on. They're just so true to their music. Lucky to say I've seen them twice, their performances literally give you an out of body experience
2001,i was 20 and by the 1.listenning,straight felt in love with this sound, now 15 years, thed same ear, the same sound, the same feeling,i love this guys, amazing, and sooooo underrated, but othersides, im glad,if they were maistream, it was boring probably. so, i enjoy it!
I can't help but be obsessed with this song. From the moment I first heard it. However many years ago. ❤❤❤
I’ve never heard anyone say “Oh, in the sun sun having fun” and sound like they really are not having fun though. I love it so much.
Yes, but it's in their blood, in spite of that.
I can so relate. 😊😉
holy shit after countless times replaying this video I just noticed Julian's voice cracked at 3:40 lol
Tomorrow will be diIfferent
So many Strokes songs start out intense then turn into something of pure beauty
This song, this album, this band will never get old. 🖤

Stop to pretend.
Stop pretending.
It seems this game is simply never-ending.
Love that bit.

A lil story of over 15 years, time flies away so fast...
I may have just watched this ten times in a row...
Still one of the best strokes songs. Let’s fucking gooo 2022
I was so lucky to see these guys live in June 2001. It was amazing!
I saw them again in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2011
The way Nick tremolos the open D and G strings and hops in and out of notes down the fret board is pretty damn awesome, but I'm not entirely surprised, after all these guys are fucking geniuses. 👏
Incredible, just incredible
The modern age is the most beautiful song of all time❤❤❤❤
they were just so simple and right in your face ......one of a kind band
genuinely one of the greatest bands to ever do it. so many imitators and not a single one can match their power
20 years later and this is still my favorite song from them.
the strokes the definition of rock and roll
Nicholas Moses Alt rock. Listen to the Doors.

one of me fav songs ever
2023 and still my all time favorite song
The pleasures are ephemeral (“No time to feel the breeze”), the coping mechanisms are numbing (“I took too many varieties”), and, when you can’t make it work, it’s best just to bail and try again another day (“Tomorrow may be different/So this Is why I’m leaving.”)
Speaking about his band’s enduring popularity in a 2014 Rolling Stone interview, Casablancas shook off the plaudits.
