Interesting project! I'm actually toying with the idea of buying one in the $500-800 range, both to prototype PCBs and for situations where the CO2 laser cutter at our town's makerspace isn't enough. Love that you went the reasonable route, to first use manual control to iron out any fitment problems and then leave the door open for a stepper motor upgrade at a later point.
