It depends on the essay and the requirements. Check your professor's rubric for whether or not you can put pictures. If you're looking for how to do this, you'll find an "Insert" option. Do one of the following: Select Insert > Pictures > This Device for a picture on your PC. Select Insert > Pictures > Stock Images for high quality images or backgrounds.

On my word I don’t have the same setting tabs as you do, why is this?
Are you using Word online or is it installed on your computer?
