- MLA Citation Style can be very confusing and intimidating, but it doesn't have to be. In this video, I explain how to write using MLA Style, including how to format a paper, write in-text citations, and works cited entries. Still confused? Ask me a question in the comments and I'll be glad to answer them. Thanks for watching and good luck writing!
This is Episode 7 in the series for my ENG101 Class for Eastern Arizona College.
0:27 for page formatting, 3:33 for in-text citations, 6:41 for work cited page

My middle school English teacher was terrible, thank you for explaining this much better
OMFG you guys don't understand how confused I was about this. Thank you, I almost dropped a class because my prof. didn't explain this in a way I understood and proceeded to tell me I was doing it all wrong with out showing me what I was doing wrong.
I hope this helps you in the future then! 🤞🏻

Oh my gosh my Professor didn’t explain it either, he just assumes we all know. He’s not very nice either. I’ve been so frustrated and have not been motivated at all due to his comments. He makes me feel like I’m stupid.
I had this same thing happen, and I *did* drop the class. It was awful. My current Eng Comp professor is much better, is teaching us instead of expecting us to know MLA already, and actually directed me here.
e
why can't professors explain things like this lol
Cause hes the type thats on coke
I also agree with you i am tasked with assignments with research papers and i didnt know how to do the formats in microsoft word

Using this in 2020 and it was so well explained and helpful yet simple! Thank you sooo much this was just what I needed!! Keep making great content please!
MLA frightened me before your video, after it I taught my friends MLA myself
+Qafar Qafarov That’s amazing! Thank you for sharing!
For the most part, I agree, but after reading my old 2020 MLA style handbook, I realized that most professionally written papers are expected to be written in Times New Roman font with size 12 lettering.
Good video, by the way!
Dude, this is so helpful, thank you for the calm, cool, clarity!
" and and brief", wow..,and I gathered so much. Just imagine if I had You for a hour and half. Thank you again. You got a new subscriber here.

Thank you very much for this helpful video. It informed me on just about everything I needed to know to cite my project correctly. I havent actually checked, but have you done a video on how to correctly do hanging indent? If not, I would also really appreciate that too. Anyways, thank you again for the helpful video.

So grateful for this lesson
Thanks so much for this video! It really helped me with my essay. 😊
You're an excellent teacher.
@Read, Write, and Cite great video, super helpful! How do I site a quote from a historic document, like a war message or say the Constitution?
Yay! It’s going to depend on where you are getting the information from. If it’s from a website, you can probably treat it like an article on a website. Probably looks something like this: Author. “Title.” Website Title. Website Publisher. Date Published. Date Accessed. Link.
Of course my English 3 honors course is doing a MLA style research paper. But the teacher left on maternity leave on the first day of school. So I have learned absolutely nothing this year related to English this semester. Thank you for the help.
I was about to give up and then found your video..thank you so much🙏
Thank you very much. Good explanation, I really appreciate.

I'm glad it helped!
Thank you for simplifying it.
Thank you for saving our careers!!!!!
Thanks man, super understanding
direct & to the point lol appreciated
I appreciate how easy to understand this video is. I was going to share it with my students, but I didn't because of an oversight. When you show the in-text citation, you have the author's name in the signal phrase and also in the citation. If the author's name is in the sentence, the citation should not repeat the author's name. You might have intended to go over that but maybe forgot.
Thank you for watching the video and taking the time to write. My understanding is that while you don't have to repeat the author's name in attribution and the citation, it isn't a problem if you do repeat it. In my experience, the exceptions may be more confusing to students rather than the rule, so I focus more on how to do it rather than the situations where they can do something different, like repeating attribution. I also always encourage students to listen to their classroom teachers as well. Thanks for your concern!
That was a lot of help. Thanks for doing this video. I have a question though. Could I site a personal interview that was not published? If so, how?
Theoretically yes, but your teacher may or may not accept it. Citing is about showing where information comes from, even if it isn’t published for others to see.
wow! you explained it so well! Thank you!

Bro you are a life saver
what about your signal phrase? does the title of an article on a website, or pdf file need to also be italicized?
+Mignificento Good question. It depends. An article on a website would be in quotations because it’s part of a larger work (the website). A PDF file, if it is a stand alone work would be italicized.
still helping me 3 years later. thanks.
This is so kind. Thank you! I’m so glad these videos have helped you!
Great stuff.
you just helped me get a 98 in english, preciate the vids
if I have multiple sentences in a row that use info from a website do I have to put a citation at the end of each sentence or can I just put it once?
If I were your teacher, I would say cite in every sentence, but many teachers don’t feel citing that often is necessary. I’d ask your teacher what they want.
Really useful, thanks a million
god bless your soul

very nicely explained. Thank you
You’re welcome!
OWL is the thing I've been looking for🧡🧡
I know this video is somewhat old but I appreciate the help, I'm in a writings foundation 2 class and we don't have visualizations in class, can be a little frustrating and also if the school produces you the wrong book lol, really appreciate the help.
where do you mention a quote ? before or after the mla cite
Before.
great video, what about paraphrasing and only using part of an exact quote?
It would look more like a direct quote. Quote the exact quote and include your in-text citation at the end and you’re good.
Don't forget Times new roman font with size 12
Hello classes have resumed, if you need help with managing your online classes and assignments. I can help you out, kindly reach out at profrubypiper@gmail.com
Omg I can’t wait until I can use the font I freaken want! I used to like English(past tense), yep!
If I add an in text citation do I have to include it also on the "Works Cited" page?
This if a citation in two parts. The in-text citation is part 1 and the works cited entry is part 2. Both are necessary.
@@rwc Cool, and everything should be enumerated?
Saved my History grades🙏🏾
Thank you for the video, it really cleared up a lot. I have a question about the names, should I write my professors full name?
The full name is appropriate.
Read, Write, and Cite thank you!
thank you this was a big help
+Richard Campbell You’re welcome! Thanks for watching.
Hello classes have resumed, if you need help with managing your online classes and assignments. I can help you out, kindly reach out at profrubypiper@gmail.com
thanks you1
What if the book has 2 authors, what should we cite then?
Cite both. For in-text citations, include both names then the page number. For your works cited entry, cite the first author’s last name first, then the first name and the second author’s name regularly.
Question when you site a webpage do I have to quote the information I’m using?
Yes. No matter what the source is, if you are using someone else's words or ideas you should cite them. How you cite it will depend on the source though.
Thank you it helped me out sooooo much
Great! I’m so glad it helped!
For in-text citations, most of the time, there arent page numbers so I do (Last name of author, year for source). If you have multiple authors, do you do "Last name of first author et al, year of sourse)?
MLA doesn’t do years like that. APA does. You can substitute paragraph numbers or line numbers for page numbers. Multiple authors are listed by their last names in the order they were listed by the source. Does that make sense?
@@rwc lol I forgot that the year goes with APA since we only did APA in college. It makes sense. Thanks.
Thank you, this really helped with my Essay🙏🙏
You're welcome!
what about you took a quote from another research paper, does the name or author of the writer of that paper needed to be include??
Yes 👍
Thank you!
get you a Tylenol or something sir...
Thank you so much.
Good video! Very helpful! The sniffling was a bit distracting, but we're all human lol 💁🏽♀️
Yeah, it was a sniffly day
After everything how do you cite?
Clear. Thank u
This guy is awesome...

yeah thanks it was very helpful
+John Ware Great! You’re welcome.
Can you tell me how did you make this video? Using which application or Website?
I record my screen using OBS (Open Broadcast Software). It’s free!
Hi! So how would I do intext citations for Shakespeare and works cited?
We treat Shakespeare that same as everyone else. Your in-text citations could reference a page or a scene and line number. The works cited will depend on how you are accessing the play. If it’s a book, cite it like a book. If it’s a webpage, cite it like a webpage, etc. Make sense?
@@rwc Yeah! Thank you so much!
Ali Coach You’re welcome and good luck!
Wait, if I cite a web source, where would I put the publisher? My teacher marked me down even though I had the author but he specifically wanted the "publisher"
Check this out under publisher: owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style/mla_formatting_and_style_guide/mla_formatting_and_style_guide.html
MLA suggests using Times New Roman font in 12 point size, too.
Serifs make text easier to read.
did you use MLA 8th edition?
and btw there is a tool on Word which allows you to cite the source, I was expecting you'd use it.
I like to make sure my students know how to do it on their own before using tools like Word to do it for them so they know if the tool is correct or not.
@@rwc Another thing about the Word tool which makes me nervous is the MLA edition used. I don't know if it's the latest edition or previous ones. so it's always better to make sure about the citation before submitting the final work.
You did a good job.
Thanks! There are some differences between the 7th and 8th editions for sure.
How do you cite in MLA format when you quote an amendment from the U.S. Constitution?
Hello classes have resumed, if you need help with managing your online classes and assignments. I can help you out, kindly reach out at profrubypiper@gmail.com
good explanation
Ok so what to do if we are making headings? how to do spacing and capitalization and highlighting there?
Everything is still double-spaced and you capitalize heading and subheadings just like you would the title of the paper.
Here is a link that might help: owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style/mla_formatting_and_style_guide/mla_general_format.html
@@rwc thanks a lot for helping out!
Thank you so much
I am using word on macbook air 2020. I have everything fine but when my teacher gets the essay the page number is on the left. It looks fine on my end but not to him. Why?
Are you inserting the page number using the page number feature or manual king typing it in?
