Not really, it was right at home in its time. There's plenty of equally awesome boss themes from the early 90s, like the boss theme from Rocket Knight Adventures or a lot of the Gunstar Heroes soundtrack.
This theme is even more intimidating when you realize that Big Arms is so powerful it can hurt even super sonic with its slams alone. Now that's true power right there.
Flashback... 1994, my neighbor and I sitting on the floor, staring wide-eyed and mouths open as one of us battles Robotnik and the other cheers on. Jumping up and down when we beat the game. Ah, nostalgia.
I remember I was sick and me and my dad were home playing this game and I was playing this boss and he came in “the music sounds different is this the final boss?” And I said yes and I beat it and then I jumped up and started dancing to this masterpiece because it still plays for a minute after you win and then I cried of happiness. Ah the nostalgia. And then we ate ice cream because of it.
I can still remember the first time I saw this boss. Seven years old, had just spent a few days trying to master that final gauntlet of bosses. Nailed the first cannon one with no problem, Destroyed the 2nd one without much effort. Feeling like I had actually beaten the game at this point. Then this monstrosity came in. Two massive arms extended out and a spiked shell on his top. And that music, I could distinctly remember thinking to myself "Sonic could actually die here." Man I miss that youthful innocence.
For real man! You summed up how I felt when I first played this boss too! (Except I was 5 years old so it was probably stronger! lol) To this day beating that thing is one of the best gaming memories I have period! I miss having that youthful innocence as well! :D

This is such an immersive theme for a 90s platform game. It starts off real ominous and vengeful, like "what the fuck did you say to me, little bitch?" while slowly walking towards you. And then the music picks up the pace as if it were throwing a brutal punch with all its might. The fight within the song continues until the part before the chorus, when the drum beat stops. You hit your foe square in the jaw. Picture this moment as when he's wiping the blood off of his chin, and lunging for you as the song picks back up. That's just how I visualize it, anyway. Great track, either way.
