I did a no save run of this game with my brother once, just for kicks and giggles. by the time I got to big arms I had one life left, 9:30 on the clock, and I had burned all my rings on supersonic. I was able to no-hit big arms in under half a minute.
I remember replaying that boss soany times but never minding it because that theme was so epic and thumping too. If you ever play it again, play on a stereo recover with good speakers. That's how I did it. It was thumping for real

As much as I grew out of my sonic phase I still play his games for fun and the nostalgia feeling and I do listen to soundtracks of the games from time to time.
Love how they have the launch of the death egg take so long to drop your ring count before the boss. Then you "outsmart" it and change to super after the launch, only to have it knocked out of you first time big arms grabs you. As a kid, this must have obliterated my mind. 😂
What I love about this final boss theme is how it represents the escalation of Eggman's schemes and his rivalry with Sonic: In Sonic 1 they just met. Sonic was merely a nuisance to Eggman, so he just tried to drown him in Scrap Brain Act 3 and crush him with the pistons. He didn't had much of a plan and he ends up running away. In Sonic 2 Eggman upped his game by trapping Sonic in his flying fortress the Death Egg, stripped him of his rings, forced him to face Mecha Sonic, and then fought head on using his Death Egg Robot. Eggman wasn't messing around anymore. In Sonic 3 & Knuckles built an even bigger Death Egg Robot, one that can crush Sonic with just it's fingers. This robot also appear to more resistant, as it has two phases. The music in this fight sounds more heroic in the second half, compared to the two previous final boss themes that sounded more hopeless. Eggman, despite improving his mechanical creations, is very much out of his league now that Sonic is stronger and more experienced. At the end of everything Eggman can only run away in fear, as Sonic chases him through the collapsing bridge and later the space as Super Sonic.
this is my favorite sonic track, absolutely incredible music!! As a kid it always felt so epic to hear this playing at the final boss and it still does!
The final boss fight In sonic 3 is epic! Just the way that when you think that you beaten Robotnik the sky goes dark and down comes Robotnik in the egg arm machine and this music plays absolutely.. epic!.
I wanted to get into modding my switch for this purpose, but mine is a patched one and I'm not about to tear it apart just for music. You might be able to mod yours though.
0:45 I dunno why, but this part of the theme feels somewhat emotional. Like all the stuff Sonic has been through (Sonic 1, Sonic CD, Sonic 2, Sonic 3&K) has led to this!
This theme sounds like a final boss of the Trilogy, and if you have the 2 cartridges locked on, this is like only the mid point. Sonic 3 & Knuckles is pretty damn big game for the time. This theme rocks.

The boss themes in the sonic games are pure iconic. The quality reminds me a bit of final fantasy 7’s boss battles. A looming sense of danger and an adrenaline thrill ride.

don't know if i ever wrote this, but here's my experience first seeing (and hearing!) that boss: imagine, you are in mid day, but suddenly the sky turns black. and so goes the music. you know there's something coming. something from your wierdest nightmares. (0:00 - 0:15) i was scared to hell at 5 years old - but i knew that was the battle that was the end of all (0:16- 0:35)! being desperate how to destroy this thing i jumped away from his hands just to think of a solution and finally found one (0:36 - 0:45). so i gathered my courage and turned against robotnik and his hellish machine (accompanied by the music now in major key) that would kill sonic in no time. (0:46 - 0:55) finally sonic and me succeeded. what a ride, best victory ever.
