  • Welcome back! In today's video I'm sharing the 4 ways I continue to learn Italian at home, outside of my classroom. I have 4 hours of Italian lessons every weekday, but I still make extra effort to continue learning. For those of you who are new here, I currently live in Bologna, Italy where I attend a language school to learn Italian! It's been a little over 4 months now and I love living here!

    So glad to see you back Shea! Your language learning tips have helped me TREMENDOUSLY with learning Japanese and though I love those videos your vlogs are JUST as important as the language learning videos because when I’m going through a tough patch with my language journey I look up Japanese vlogs and it reminds me why I’m working so hard and though I’m not learning Italian it’s next on my list and I’m sure the vlogs are helping others as well. You’re doing incredible and helping so many people. Don’t listen to the negativity of a few people

      Aww thank you, I’m so happy to hear that! And you make a good point, I also think it could be motivating for people studying Italian to also see life in Italy. Learning a language is also about taking an interest in the culture, so I think vlogs about life here in Italy would be nice to make 😊

    Hi, Shea! I'm so happy to see your video! Please, don't listen to people who try to tell you what videos you need to film. Make videos about whatever you want! I'm here to see you and all your videos are very interesting! Yes, I found you because I was searching for the videos about learning Italian but now I love all your videos! So I'm looking forward to watching your vlogs from Italy and other videos about living in Italy 🧡

      Thank you! I just finished editing another video today that I will post next week and hopefully I can get back on track with posting. I would love to share more of my daily life here and you’re right, I don’t have to listen to the people who told me not to make vlogs, they can just chose not to watch them 🤷🏼‍♀️

    I've lived in both Italy and Germany for a bit as part of my Bachelor's degree and fully agree that simply moving to a country isn't enough if you want to learn the language there - you really have to actively seek out opportunities to properly immerse yourself and you can't just "pick it up". I definitely also found that you get SO much more out of the whole experience of living abroad if you genuinely want to learn the language! Yes, in a lot of scenarios, especially if you live in a bigger city, you can get by just with English but you miss out on so much!! 😊🇮🇹
    Also I can relate to being uncomfortable filming in public (especially walking and talking) - very occasionally I'm just like, I don't care I'm never going to see these people again, but usually that doesn't happen and I end up either just not doing it at all or slipping up too much 😅

    • @SheaJordan
      @SheaJordan  Рік тому +2

      Exactly!! My experience living in Italy now is so different from when I studied abroad in Rome and only really ever spoke English. And yes, sometimes I feel more confident to film outside but other days I’m so convinced everyone is staring at me and judging me 😂😭

    I for one would love to see the vlogs especially about what life is like on the day to day as you said. As someone who is learning Italian and visited Italy and plan to return to do something similar to what you are doing, it would be nice to see how you got on!

    I would love to see a mix of content, language learning, travel, every day life in Italy. As to picking up a language, my Italian mother-in-law lived in the USA for 60 years and never got beyond an A2 level in English. There are millions of immigrants who never pick up the local language.

    • @SheaJordan
      @SheaJordan  Рік тому +2

      Thank you for the feedback! And yes, language is so complex that you really have to make an effort to learn. There are definitely phrases you can “pick up” but as you said, it’s still something you have to actively try and won’t just “happen” after years of being in a country.

    Hi Shea, I am an Italian living in Ireland in the last 3.5 years and I am still learning your beautiful language. However, sometimes I’m not able to understand and speak it as I would like to. For this, I’ve become a bit awkward in College. I’ll be happy to receive any advice from you and if you ever go to Bergamo in the summer I’ll be happy to show you around. Best wishes,
    Federica

    Great to see a new video from you Shea and you seem very happy 😊 When I moved to Italy I found a couple of friends who wanted to learn English. We agreed to do an 'intercambio' once a week, where we would spend one hour speaking English and another hour speaking Italian. We taught each other nice turns of phrases and with constant practice I was able to integrate these into everyday life. X

    Non vedo/vediamo l'ora di vedere uno o più video in cui parli italiano 😁
    Tipo per esempio: come è cambiata la tua percezione dell'Italia dalla prima settimana in cui eri qui, ad oggi invece che ci sei già da diversi mesi?
    se tipo certe cose a distanza di mesi, ti hanno completamente deluso oppure piacevolemente sopreso etc etc
    E' sempre bello sentire un parere esterno da una persona che di fatto vive qui da diverso tempo
    😊

    I have a way to learn with books that I have used to improve my German and a little bit my English. I get a book that I wanna use to study and I buy its audiobook. What I do is to reproduce the audiobook while I am reading the book and I repit the words how the voice of the audiobook says.

    I think it would be helpful if you went to a local Toastmasters club. Toastmasters is an organization that helps people to improve their public speaking and leadership skills. The meeting consists of people giving prepared speeches, other people giving their evaluation of those speeches, and people giving impromptu speeches. You could visit a Toastmasters club and give a speech in Italian.

      I have videos about how to stay motivated while language learning and some other tips. 😊 It really helps if you find ways to study that you actually enjoy. For example, for me I like watching TV series in Italian or watching UA-camrs, I also like using recipes in Italian because I enjoy cooking. Some people change the language on their games, etc. Find ways to incorporate the language into hobbies or things you already enjoy doing.

    I know it may sound a little weird but I sometimes watch programmes in Italian that are made for very young children because they speak slower and the language is far more simple and isn’t a particular dialect. Would this potentially work?
