Bringing Yabá from wreck to dreamy! Episode 27
In this episode, a pacific morning quickly changes when we have to start destroying more parts of our boat.

    We are Ben and MP!
Recently we decided to purchase a two-masted 70ft wooden schooner in Brazil. The fun detail about our story is that the boat we bought was sinking and relying on many bilge pumps to survive so we had to lift it onto the dry to start a full refit. Once the boat was lifted (for the first time in her life) we realized that the works needed were a lot more than expected. Between bailing or accepting the challenge, we decided to go for the second option. Watch us as we bring Yabá back to life with the help of an amazing team of traditional shipwrights, sharing every phase of the process, overcoming the highs and lows and having fun along the way.

Hallo guys , I am wondering why you didn’t decide to buy a new boat maybe done in a better yard where they dry up the wood for years so is lasting long . You asked why it is rotten in such a short time …….. because it is fresh wood . It is absolutely not worth to change it with other fresh one it is going to be rotten in two years , maybe less . Run away from there . They are steeling your money .this kind of boat have to stay out of the sea for at least 8 month a year . That’s why they use fresh wood staying out of the water it does not move too much … it is fresh

In the Caribbean, especially Guyana they have little or no klim to dry the wood. So the use whatever they have. You're right though. It would be interested to see.

I really want to wish you guys luck with this project. I really do! But I have to say this. I have been around boats my entire adult life and teen years. I have a pretty good seaman's eye. And everywhere my eye goes I see more rotten wood and very serious safety issues. As your guy is cutting away on your safety rails with his electric chain saw I can see behind him the extensive wood rot in the cabin house and topsides. The rot does not seem to end. When is enough enough you two. If you wanted a third world built boat in the end of this you will have something that is not even as seaworthy as a new third world built boat. You guy's are piecing together new problems on top of old serious problems. God I really do pray that all you do is live on this boat in some protected harbor area. I fear you will take this boat to sea and suffer some catastrophic hull failure with a sinking. You will never find marine insurance to protect your investment. all your time and money lost. I also pray that this vessel does not kill one or both of you. I am very serious Stay In Port !!! Do not go to sea in this boat!!

To resume people thought ... we understand your goal to refit and make it pay by internet but the way this is done will make a boat not safe compare to a brand new one.
Also from my point of view, such a big boat is not safe at all to drive : i have been sailing for 30 years and competitive race sailing but i am worred for your safety.
This boat is good for living neer the coast but i would not travel with it when the wind is hard evey action in such a big boat is 20 time more difficult, the pb is not the boat to be strong but the humain who becomes weak with such a monster boat like that.

Having seen some of the comments below, I think I would agree it is the most rotten boat I have ever seen. I think it would have been much cheaper to just get the yard to build you a new boat, just how you wanted it than try and rebuild this old crock!! I'm also concerned with all the use of iron nails and spikes in the boat. The iron interacts with wood to cause 'iron sickness' which greatly increases wood deterioration. Add in the salt from salt water spray and it makes it even worse.

Yaba rotted prematurely and very near completely. Was the decay a result in part of the original construction methods and materials? Are the same methods being used to repair it? For example bare wood butted and or overlapping bare wood, iron nails, no bedding compound, etc. It would be very sad to see Yaba II suffer a similar fate because evidence of causes of problems were not remedied in the rebuild and in fact were replicated. Please learn from the mistakes of the original build, if any. Buena suerte.

At least you should not paint the new deck parts. Thats a major mistatake. Water comes inside mircoscopic cracks in paint and never find the way out. The result you see on your boat->paint looks ok, underneth the wood is rotten. Wood can handly moisture very well without rotten away, if it can dry again.
Check out old technics by oiling the wood, so the wood can regulate still the moisture. It makes u huge difference. I see wooden boats, more than 100 years old, unpainted, only oiled and nothing is rotten. I also see wooden boats painted with "modern" paint and its rooten like your boat after 10-15 years. Think about it.

The group is preoccupied with bringing in new members.
The group is preoccupied with making money.
Questioning, doubt, and dissent are discouraged or even punished.
Any post that questions the purpose or techniques demonstrated or attempts to warn of blatantly poor workmanship is a threat to the site and its income stream. It is becoming obvious that "sailing yaba" is not the goal. I know it's costing quite a bit but I would love to be able to come and join you for a cruise somewhere someday when you're done. Wow great job with the help from everyone, always looking forward to your next video.

    Hello friends,
Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the little chat you had with all your friends that are taking this journey with you. Also to wish MP a happy mothers day because, if you're not careful, that sweet little dog, that adores you two, will become your child and share your adventures in the years to come. believe it or not, I would change places with that little black bundle of love, just to share the adventured with you. Keep coming back for these little chats so we will stay up to date with all that's happening .
    Love, Johnnie

I must say I was skeptical to your project in the beginning. A young couple with a huge rotten boat dragged up on the beach. O lord. But now I see that you go about this completely different than I anticipated. I'm impressed. You will end up with a supersolid boat that will last your lifetime. Congratulations.

would it have been cheaper to just have them build an entire boat from scratch? Im realy curious if there is any reason behind the financial reason for taking every piece out and replacing it rather than just building an entire boat off of the same measurements/ spec. Kind of like the "TallyHo". At least in the tallyHo the original lasted for around 100 years.

This episode confirms what a lot of us have already said. The whole boat is rotten, I think they honestly do not care. They know the boat is what makes the channel and gives them an income to not need to get a job ever again. If it takes another 2 years, who cares. Very clever people, really.

I'm starting to think it would have been better to buy the plans for the boat and just build it from the ground up. That way you wouldnt have to tear it apart, thus only doing half the work.

    • @VenturiLife

It would have been a LOT better to have done it that way, not relying on the old boat structure and you could get it all fair, true and fit things with much better tolerances. This is being built to last 20 years on the outside with good maintenance.

Hello, friends. First congrats for the monimental work you have taking upon your shoulders.
I have quite a bit of experience with boats and as a kid that grew up at at a fishing port with tons of wooden boats and having graduated as a ship engineer..
Let me tell you a couple of things about all boats, there are many factors and rules regarding boat maintainance/construction.
    1. A boat is as good as much as you can keep the water out and does not poddle any where.
    2. Materials make a big difference. We, in Costa Rica use Cedar wood. I have boards at home thst are more than a hundred years old, sitting above or below other woods that have been attacked by termites and others but the Cedar pieces were always intact. Just an example of using the correct material, wood in this case.
In your boat case all the rooten wood areas are where you have elements that are not design to expel out (drain out) the rain/ocean water toward the outside instead it qccumulate it and now you know very well what the end result is.
    3. Only the absoluyrly sstricly electrical wiring or devices should go in the wngine room, all others that can go either in the bridge or main deck. Remember if you have water inside the boat you will be so happy if your emergency/running batteries were somewhere up and away from the flooding water.
I do not want to make you bore with many more details about subjects but if you need to, pls do not hesitate to contact me back.
Best regards and wishes with your project.
