I picked up A Sultry Month earlier in the summer. I have loved reading through it as temperatures have soared in London. As you say, it really brings that period of time to life. The descriptions of the stifling heat are wonderful.
Dear Miranda so happy to hear that you and your Mum are feeling so much better. Currently reading Father, August book club read. I actually order A sultry Month but won’t be receiving it until Aug 31st.
Thank you for the lovely recommendations Miranda! I take note of every book you recommend and long for more free time for reading all of them. I am actually enjoying Father. It is fantastic!!! I am waiting for the Confort Book Club discussion. Kind regards. 😊
Thank goodness your doing Okey . That's exactly what I was thinking these passing days while rewatching your other vedios that you don't have a late summer book recommendation for us I love all your book recommendations but I was disappointed in dear miss bird end I thought that it was rushed I hoped more from it , I figured that probably there will be a sequel but never the less I don't know I wanted more than that again hope you both get better cheerio
Best wishes for good health to you and your mom. My mother introduced me to Rumer Godden several years ago. I loved The Greengage Summer. The young girl was so relatable. I enjoy your channel, watching from Tennessee in the US.
I loved The Feast, that was quite a discovery for me! Now I am going to follow your advice and read Maud Martha and Father. Thank you for all the wonderful book recommendations!
Hello Miranda glad to hear you and your mom are feeling much better . . tfs your summer list I am so ready for autumn/fall weather and reading have a great day and weekend ahead take care ❤️🙋♀️🌺🌻🦋💐
Hello Miranda, I have been currently reading a number of your book recommendations. I have often wondered if you have ever talked about the glorious painting on the wall or is it wall paper? It is very special. I think it's in your bedroom. I feel sure that it might have been a strong reason why you moved into your house. So beautiful.
A Sultry Summer and China Court would be my first choices from your recommendations. Father is waiting in the wings for me to start and finish by the 31st, in time for the Comfort Book Club. So delighted to see a video from you this week, given all you have been through, and so glad you and your Mum are better and enjoying London (great snapshots of your time there on Instagram)! Please stay safe and well!!❤️❤️
I’m so glad Miranda. You and your mum are recovering from covid. Me and my husband had covid a couple of weeks ago. It makes you feel run down. A great selection of books you have . Enjoy your reading
What a delight to see a new video from you! I was not certain that you would be up to filming much, and i am glad to hear that you and your mum are feeling better. I am still working my way through your monthly seasonal recommendations, and I fear that i haven't enough time, eyes, or ears to tackle my growing TBR list! I am looking forward to the CBC discussion later this month.
Just discovered your channel. I love your recommendations and visits to bookshops, and your Mother! My favs are mysteries (Agatha Christie since age 12) Rosamunde pilcher , Wodehouse but also have learned about so many more! Thankyou from the US (Orig from Long Island). Happy Fedtive Holiday season❤️
Thank you Miranda for this year of monthly and seasonal reads. I have my September books stacked up and ready - "The Lark", "The Fortnight in September" and "Marking Time" (although I must admit I became impatient and have started reading it this week). I loved "Father" and am very much looking forward to this month's bookclub. It was a brilliant read. All of the August books you spoke of are enticing me, "Maud Martha" in particular. As you described it, I was reminded of my favorite phrase, "The Magic of Ordinary Days" (which is sort of my motto to live by). I am so glad to see you (and your Mom) are well and hope your trip to London is fabulous - enjoyed your instagram post from "The Garden Museum".
Thanks so much, Nancy for your kind words! All favourites of mine in your Seotember list. The Garden Museum afternoon was so much fun - glad you enjoyed my photos on Instagram too.
Hello Miranda..I’m so happy that you and your mum are feeling better and enjoying London (IG). I’m currently enjoying reading Father and looking forward to the discussion. Since I do like Elizabeth von Arnim’s writing style, I think I will read The Caravaners next. Thank you for the recommendations 🌸 By the way, that is a beautiful vase.💜
Miranda, I know you love poetry. I would love to learn how to get into poetry and learn to love it as well. Any chance of you doing some videos on poetry and giving some tips on how to enjoy it more? Thanks.
Always adore your book recommendations, Miranda. I've just finished China Court and watched last year's book club on it. The way Rumer Godden gently nudged time forwards and backwards whilst still progressing her story was spellbinding. I loved every page. I definitely intend to make that luscious sounding velvet cream that you and your Mum managed to refine. I have a soft spot for The Owl Service as Alan Garner grew up in the same small Cheshire village, Alderley Edge, as my father. The Weirdstone of Brisingaman is also a particularly exciting adventure. I'm going to try and fit in a few more summery reads in the weeks we have before autumn. The Swiss Summer by Stella Gibbons and Greengage Summer by Rumer Godden are at the top of my list.
So happy you enjoyed the recommendations, Sally. Thanks so much for your kind comment. I have seen Alan Garner's autobiography/memoir, but haven't had a good look at it yet, but imagine he discusses his childhood and Alderley Edge in it. I have an old copy of The Weirdstone of Brisingaman, I copy, and am tempted to dig that one out too. I really enjoyed the Stella Gibbons and the Rumer Godden. Enjoy your August reads!
Hi Miranda! What a nice surprise! Firstly, I must say that dress is stunning! I love that shade of green! The Greengage Summer and The Owl Service have piqued my interest the most, but all of the recommendations sound so lovely! I will read Spellstoppers to my son...it sounds perfect for him! I am really enjoying Father and looking forward to the discussion. Very happy to hear that you both are very much recovered! Thank you for the wonderful video!🌹
Thanks so much for your comment and your kind words! The Rumer Godden and Alan Garner are such favourites of mine: can't recommend them highly enough! Hope you're having a lovely Sunday.
I’m so glad you and your mom are well in the road to recovery! I have both The Feast and The Greengage Summer in my pile to read this month. So many of the others you mentioned sound fantastic as well. I am making some pages in my reading journal with monthly TBR’s and many of your recommendations are on there! Thank you for all these seasonal videos…I have so loved this series. 😊
That's very kind, Jennifer! I'm so happy to have completed a year's worth of suggested monthly reads now. I loved both The Feast and The Greengage Summer as you know and hope you'll enjoy them as much as I did.
Thank you for this series of monthly reading recommendations, I have loved them. Today I take note of The Caravaners (I love von Arnim) and A Sultry Moth. I'm glad you're both feeling better xxx
Thanks so much for your kind support! It's so much appreciated, and I really loved The Caravaners so hope as a fellow von Arnim fan, you will too! Have a lovely Sunday! xxx
Hi, Miranda, thank you for sharing so many inviting reading recommendations! Good to hear, you and your mum are feeling better. As a German I thought, I really have read all from Elisabeth von Arnim, but no… The Caravaners I’ve never heard of, I’ve to do some research about the German title. Spellstoppers sounds interesting for a young family child, who (unbelievable) don’t like to read except comics… And the last one is attracting me, I've enjoyed this kind of stories about living on the country side very much and reread my books from time to time. Time to read! Love, Monika❣
Thank you so much, Monika! I hope you're able to find a German edition of The Caravaners, and yes Spellstoppers would be just the sort of book to tempt a resistant reader.
@@MirandaMills Thank you, Miranda, I found out, it’s called 'Die Reisegesellschaft' (means 'the travel company'), I ordered it as e book for my kindle App and it’s SO funny…we were on camping vacations in Scandinavia since 1980 and I often tried to convince people, that their romantic visions from our holidays (guitar play and campfire in the evenings…)are SOMETIMES true… but not always. You probably can imagine, how amused I am😂, thank you so much! Education of men has fortunately made progress… unfortunately Spellstoppers is so far not translated into German, that’s a pity.
Wonderful recommendations, Miranda. I read both of the Rumer Godden books because of your recommendation and really liked them both. I loved The Feast so much! As soon as I finished it, I wanted to re-read it right away. It reminded me a bit of the tv series, Seaside Hotel. Thank you for sharing these August books 🥰❤☀
I havn't read any of Rumer Godden's but was aware you had mentioned her in the past. I have just recently picked up Black Narcissus, (yes, swayed by the beautiful Virago hardback edition!) so whilst it may not be a book perfect for August, I hope it still introduces me to Godden's work. Thank you for a lovely video, as always.
Maud Martha sounds gorgeous. I had no idea Gwendolyn Brooks wrote a novel. I can't wait to read it. I'm also hoping to get to Greengage before the seasons change. The Feast, China Court and The Owl Service are reads that continue to linger long after the last page. I adored them. As usual, everything here is tantalizing. Thank you! I'm glad you and your mum are making the most of your London getaway!
Thank you as always for your very kind support and comment, Pamela! The Brooks is such a poetic, impactful read I'm sure you'd enjoy it. Yes, we're having a lovely time!
Welcome back, Miranda and I’m so glad you and Donna are feeling better. I’ve been enjoying your pictures on Instagram and I’m glad you’re both able to enjoy some time away. I haven’t been able to get a copy of Father but I just finished next month’s CCBC selection. I won’t say anything further other than I loved it💕 your dress and the table setting and books are all so gorgeous. And now for the books. Safe to say I’ve added most of them to my wish list. The ones I didn’t add I’ve already read, mostly with thanks to you.
I love The Girls of Friar's Rise - coincidentally I am rereading all my Gwendoline Courtney titles at the moment. Maud Martha and Spellstoppers appeal to me too.
I'm so happy to hear that you and your mum are on the mend! I re-read China Court recently and enjoyed it just as much the second time around. Perhaps more. I'm looking forward to reading A Fugue in Time soon and I'll have to add Greengage Summer to the list. Thank you for all of the recommendations. I know I'm in safe hands when I pick up a Miranda recommended read.
Thank you, Miranda!🌷I’m so happy to hear that you and Donna are feeling much better and are now enjoying a well-deserved holiday. I also wanted to let you know that a couple of weeks ago I read The Feast. I loved the way you talked about it a while ago, and you are right, it is an excellent holiday read. I was so engrossed in the story that I found it difficult not to check the final chapter to know which characters would survive! It’s a book that clearly shows that parenthood is not for everyone… Maud Martha had already been brought to my attention, but after listening to your reading of the beginning, I don’t think I’ll be able to wait until next summer to read it…😊📚
Thanks so much, Emma for your kind comments! Very glad to hear that The Feast was a page turner and much enjoyed by you as well, and thank you too for letting me know my reading of the beginning moved Maud Martha up on your TBR pile.
Hi Miranda! So glad to see you back and feeling well. I really like the sound of China Court and Greengage Summer. I would also love to read The Feast. Hope you have a lovely weekend!
