  • "Is your son retaining the information?" is a question I'm asked at least once a week. Here's how we're using America the Beautiful from Notgrass, plus my schedule!

My 10th/11th grade son is using Notgrass for government and he loves it. We have the text, the extra second text, student review, & books with literature analysis; the only part we don't use are the tests. Government is hard information to digest and Notgrass makes it really simple to understand while still being complex and we have very in depth conversations about it. He is also able to connect it with other things he has learned As a side, we are a Charlotte Mason style family and this works really well with it.

I have both my kids using a Notgrass. They both love this curriculum. It’s rich in information and gets my kids thinking. I also have the Audio on a few of the them. I’m not certain they are going to have audio for all their curriculum.
My ninth grader has been using it along with my 6th grader. I can say skipping a day of this program can quickly pile up if your not consistently following what works for your children. We try to not skip a day. The kids LOVE this curriculum. And it really draws out deep discussions with the Lord in mind .The scriptures are throughout the curriculum.
The family enjoys this curriculum as their favorite class. I have purchased 4 of their curriculums.
I am so thankful for all they have labored into this curriculum and feel my kids are getting an excellent education.

My high schooler loved the world history curriculum and want to use Notgrass for American History. We did the whole package with the literature. Remember, the high school courses are worth 3 credits: Bible, history, English.

Use the online link, too. There are games, crafts, visual aids, etc.

Thank you for this!! I have begun to order this to use for next year while we spend a year in the DC area. I was wondering if your son was liking it. Thanks for the update! And I’ve been able to get the 3 main textbooks (America the Beautiful 1 and 2 and We the People) for about $50 total used. 😀

Ya that’s why I am looking for a new history for my elementary kids because we used around the world in picture books and they can’t tell me a single thing and honestly I can’t tell you a single cultural thing from most of the countries we learned about

I was so excited for this review. 🎉 I plan to use this next year with my daughter. Prolly will be using your "lesson plan" as well. I love your videos. Thank you for doing these. ❤
I do have a question: I personally use Notgrass and I use Generations as a "church history"/Bible. For my older students 4th/7th grade I use a combination of Generations (for Bible) and Biblioplan for more of a world history from a Christian perspective. Have you ever tried Biblioplan? Thoughts on it?

Do you use the Notgrass readers for your literature or do you also have a separate literature curriculum? I’ve been thinking about using Notgrass and Apologia for my middle schooler, but Notgrass seems overwhelming with the amount of reading involved for each week and Apologia also has a lot of reading. I’m just trying to wrap my head around how would we get everything else done without our school days taking 5-6+ hours. How do you do it? 😄

I am looking into this curriculum for next year for my middle schooler. My Q's are: do you read the textbooks to him or does he read it on his own? Is it too much for a middle school student to read on their own? If you read 2 chapters/lessons a week, will that take you a whole year to complete? Like 36 weeks.

Are tou doing literature separately as well? Do they have questions to go with the literature books?

So far, we haven't encountered any (and we haven't fund any upcoming), but we're still in the first book. We are not as far as I wanted to be just yet 🤣 But I'm spanning this over 2 years. We discuss the books together, though. I am doing a formal literature curriculum through Generations. This is just to add to the depth of the history curriculum.

There are questions for the literature: it's at the back of the lesson review workbook or the student workbook.

What lesson are you on at this point in the year?

  • @anmichele3829

Two chapters a week and still only going to get through one book for the year? Does that mean you would have to do 4 chapters a week to get through both books? That’s a lot of information being thrown at anyone at once. Might be why retaining information is questionable.

The chapters are super short, like 1-3 pages with tons of pictures. The assignments take maybe 5ish minutes. Totally doable.
