    I've used Fix It Grammar before, but never with more than one child, and never across so many levels. This homeschool mom learned a few things this year! I didn't know these things, but you should!

    Level three did surprise me. My daughter zoomed through the first two and wanted to do the third book. She is getting it but there are huge concepts that I had to break down (including for my own understanding). It does work though. I do daily oral language on a white board. She is telling me oh that is a that/who which clause with a prepositional phrase. I recommend everyone starting at book one no matter what grade the child is in.
    ETA and yes. Buy the teacher manual!!!!

      I haven’t used the teachers manuals only bc im so familiar bc of CC. But if I hadn’t had all the training, it would be challenging. Homeschooling in general has taught me how much I was never taught. And that was before public education dramatically changed!!!

    I relate to so much of what you said at the end. Grammar mistakes in written and oral communication seem to be commonplace now. Even in formal or academic contexts.
    One of my pet peeves is when people write "would of". It trait shows that students are not being taught grammar very well in public schools anymore. The errors are so common and are often written how they sound.
    Another one I hear often, and actually heard a newscaster say last night is, "Whenever I was at the gas station..." to reference a single occurrence, not a recurring one. I hear it everywhere.
    When my son was in public school, in the "best" district where we lived, he was constantly being sent home with worksheets that contained grammar and spelling errors. I complained every time.
    Several years ago, I knew several students going through teaching programs at university and what I learned is that the students going through teaching programs are often no longer educated to be masters in the content. There is a heavy focus on classroom management and DEI. It is typical for a teacher to learn the curriculum a summer before teaching and that often includes learning the content. It wasn't always that way.

    • @katie7748
      @katie7748 3 місяці тому +1

      I've noticed an awful lot of older folks say "would of" and "I seen." It's not just the whippersnappers. However, I do agree that it really is quite sad what passes for education these days.

      @OurHOMEschoolPlan Yes! I taught my son how to read, even though he went to preschool and public school (I was a single mom and started my undergrad at 31 so I didn't hear much choice). In Kindergarten, they were using the triple curing and whole language approach (lol at the first letter, look at the picture and guess) and I made a big stink about it because literacy has always been a special interest of mine and I couldn't believe I was seeing this in the schools. I took his school readers and folded the pictures over and highlighted the photograms. All of the teachers told me I was behind on the Science, but the school was just following the Fountaa & Pinnel curriculum. No one could cite any actual journal articles.
      I will say that, luckily, speech-language pathology programs at university never did fall victim to the whole language scam. In fact, speech therapists actually have more expertise in literacy.
      It's all so sad.

    We started at nose tree years ago and now he's in 10th and doing Frog Prince. He has loved it from day 1! I hated grammar growing up and did Abeka in my private high school years. I learned WAY more through FIG and highly recommend it to families that have kids in public and private schools as a supplement. I learned thing I never remembered or may never had been taught and I'm so thankful for FIG. If you are a parent like me that didn't like grammar, you will appreciate this course!! Thanks again Rachel, for this great review. I love their updates to the curriculum too. I just started my daughter on this at the beginning of 9th, and opted to start with level 1. She knew some basics, but i wanted her to feel really confident and not overwhelmed. We've finished the year and it was a wonderful success. Since the last 10 weeks or so are all review of what was taught in previous weeks, and no new concepts are introduced, I think a person could begin book 2 at that point if they wanted to speed things up a bit. However, I think i will be perfectly happy if my daughter gets through level 4. That is a very sufficient working knowledge of the subject in my estimation. Levels 5 and 6 are very advanced.

    I've been using Fix It grammar with my oldest for two years now. She started in level 1 but honestly I did not know much about this curriculum. I just knew it was short & effective and I needed something short & effective for her to add in to her CC curriculum since we don't do Latin. It has been a great fit for her and takes no time at all to do each day. She checks herself after she corrects the sentence. (I can trust her to do this.) But I was super happy to learn more about the scope & sequence of this curriculum and how each level progresses. I am not sure we will go past level 3. I had heard it gets VERY complex the higher you go, so I was thinking I'd have her repeat lower levels after completing up to level 3 or 4.
    But yes, I agree with you! I want my kids using and speaking correct grammar! It is very important to me as well (which is why I added Fix it to my daughter's CC load).
    My younger daughter is using EIW for grammar but eventually I want her to do Fix It as well.

      Truth be told, I pay very little attention to the actual story. We’re so busy editing the sentences….

    Thank you for making this video! I have a 16yo daughter. She hates to read and write, so I have been slow at introducing anything grammar related. We are currently finishing up a year of Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind. She hates it. However, I am thinking of continuing it another year, just at a slower pace with Fix-It Grammar mixed in for fun. GWTM contains diagramming sentences, which I feel is beneficial.
    Personally, I hated English in high school and college. I thought all of it was worthless, unless one was aiming to be a writer or an English teacher! My view has changed as I have gotten older. Funny how that happens. My family moved every year until I was in the 5th grade. My motto was, 'Fake it till you make it'. But it caught up to me in the 7th grade. I had an English teacher that did not teach. She told you what to do in the book and left you to it. I came home crying to my mother that I was going to fail. She got me a tutor. For the next two years, we worked together in the school library. I still don't know half the things I should. I am learning alongside my daughter.

    I honestly wonder why any student who isn't an English major would need to go any further than Book 1. I'm one of those weirdos, though, who thinks 90% of what we teach in modern public high schools is completely pointless to real life. I was always an excellent writer in both high school and college, and it's ironic because I couldn't have told you (until I started homeschooling my own children) anything other than a noun is a person, place, or thing. I feel like it's one of those things that just comes naturally or doesn't.

      You probably could get by ok with book 1. If you’re going to learn another language, it’s hard to translate if you don’t understand all the parts of speech and sentence structure. Also…it improves your reading level. My dad wrote a book. And my own reading level made it hard for me to comprehend. Yikes. Sometimes people write at higher levels. 😁

      My biggest reason for teaching up through at least level 4 is comma usage! It is so hard to explain proper comma usage without having the vocabulary and understanding of clauses. I am a professional writer and have always operated very intuitively; I was never explicitly taught most of what is in these books. Unfortunately, that meant I couldn't teach it very well to my daughter, and when an editor occasionally explained something using these terms I sometimes felt like an idiot. I think that having a working understanding of the vocabulary of grammar is very useful in helping us to understand sentence structure more deeply. However, I don't think that kids younger than 12 or 13 need to know much beyond the basic parts of speech. It's just too conceptual.

      My biggest motivation for going further than level 1 is, really, so my kids can understand the Bible better. When you get into questions on various topics, a lot of comprehension is dependent on a proper understanding of grammar and sentence structure. My kids are just beginning and this level will not apply to them for many years. In spite of that, thank you for posting this; this video is very encouraging to keep going with IEW. I found out about IEW this year, while my first is in 1st grade. And their approach to writing letters has already helped us immensely by helping to clear up b/d confusion.

      @@SnuggieSaregreat-sk1lz yah!!! IEW is a fantastic program!! That’s why I keep going back to it!
      I totally agree with you on Bible comprehension. I thought of that after I had already responded. But there Srenso many complex sentences written in the Bible. Understanding language actually helps with interpretation! I remember thinking this often as we were learning how to diagramm complex sentences in CC. I’d be reading in one of Paul’s epistles and 1 sentence will be going on over 4 verses! And on the middle of the sentence is a “so that.” That kind of conjunction makes you think, “what is that ‘so that’s referring to!’ It’s not always as clear to figure out if your knowledge of grammar is only at 3rd-4th grade level! 😉 (I wish I could think of a specific example off the top of my head. Maybe when I run across one, I’ll have to make a video about it. Why grammar matters! lol! 😂)

    Some marketers actually make spelling/grammar mistakes on purpose to get more engagement and eyes on their marketing. For everyone that walks right by, someone will engage with it and drive more traffic and potentially more sales. Weird tactic, but I have heard several people mention it!

    • @OurHOMEschoolPlan
      @OurHOMEschoolPlan  3 місяці тому

      Hmmmm…. You COULD do that if you write everything on a white board. But the edited sentence in the teachers manual (once you get to level 2 and especially level 3) has A LOT of editing marks to filter through to find your original incorrect sentences. But you could do it if you wanted to. Not only would you have to write the sentence, but also the list of things to correct. And you’d also have to go over all the lessons with your kid (the info at the beginning of each week.. so you’d be sharing a book to look at. And then the period review worksheets…..you’d either have to forego those or write it all out as well.

    My 6th grader has been using Fix It since 3rd grade and does great with it. That being said, I'm considering having him repeat Book 3 next year for 7th grade just because he started to make more repeated mistakes toward the end of it and I want to make sure he's really grasping the info before we move on to Book 4. Then again, it is spiral, and those concepts will be reviewed in Book 4. Could I get your opinion?

    • @OurHOMEschoolPlan
      @OurHOMEschoolPlan  3 місяці тому +1

      The end of book three is also review. So if the mistakes are still happening on a regular basis, maybe repeating book 3 isn’t a bad idea. Then they can be reinforced to mastery! 😉 there’s still plenty of time to get through all the Fix It books and if you can eventually get to level 6, your child’s grammar knowledge will be superior to most people!! 😉

      🤔 that’s a great question. I think so. Especially if your student is also writing and you’re helping edit their writing for further reinforcement.
      Fix It is so incremental and building upon itself, its simplicity is deceiving. It’s simple. But it’s effective.

      @OurHOMEschoolPlan  3 місяці тому

      Yes we’ve done a few of TGATB years. Thats hard to answer. TGATB progresses very differently. I’d have to say that IEW is more step by step with each lesson (easy + 1) . TGATB doesn’t feels as incremental. Maybe even a little more all over the place, if that makes sense. But i definitely am not trying to knock TGATB. They just teach very differently.

      @@OurHOMEschoolPlan that’s what we used this year. And in some ways I like it. I like that you get art and geography, but the all over kind of gets me, I think I know what you are talking about. Today we are writing, next day we are diagraming next day spelling. I dunno. I feel like there is no mastery mixed into the spiral. It is short lessons. They are fairly simple mostly. I like how colorful it is. But I keep wondering if I should be doing iew structure and style and fix it. Sometimes I feel like we are moving forward really slowly and I am almost board. Sometimes i feel like huh, did we miss something. I have a struggling speller so I started all about spelling on top of it. I like the idea of sentence diagraming but my understanding is iew doesn’t do that at all. Is that correct? The speller is younger and I have trouble with everything writing with him. If I dictate a sentence, he is almost in tears, if I have him do a “finish this sentence the way you would want it too finish” same problem. Then I have a total workbook kid. He does all the workbook things no problem he sometimes wants to do extra workbook things. And my oldest is adhd and is a do the absolute bare minimal or has an assignment that says answer this question from this reading and he answers another question entirely, that may be along the same subject but not at all what it asked. 🙄 or we have said you have to write this way with indentation but then he forgets to separate the paragraphs so you try to get him to write again and he separates the paragraphs but then. He doesn’t indent. Opinions? Do any of these things sound like problems you have had to work through and did one work better for something than the other? Also, I kind of like open and go. Also like a little bit of hands off, thus the reason I never went with something as complex as abeka.

      @@user-nq1vg2vi3e yep! All this sounds very familiar to me. I have kids who love workbooks and an ADHD daughter who has similar struggles to what you mentioned. I will say for her, though, at 14 she’s starting to grow out of some of it. ADHD is such a spectrum of difficulty, can’t really compare child with child. But I know for me, some of it is just “getting it” later than the others.
      If your child struggles with the grammar and writing concepts and your questioning TGATB, I’d say IEW would be a great systematic approach. It really is easy + 1 so it’s not overwhelming to just start at the beginning. But you’ll be AMAZED at how much your progress. If you want to add in diagramming (bc yes, IEW doesn’t teach that) there are other supplemental books to teach that. Diagramming the scriptures is one (though I’m lot sure it’s the BEST one). But I know there are books to teach that.
      I hear all about spelling is great! My struggling speller did great also with “A reason For Spelling”. I have a video about it if you’re interested. But I do hear GREAT things about All About Spelling!!!
